1.4 tsi coolant temperature sensor location - under reading coolant temperature

Featured Replies

Hello,

Can anyone kindly point me to the relevant part and exact location of the coolant temperature sensor on the engine block? I believe this is causing my car to incorrectly report lower than actual coolant temperature but if anyone has any other suggestions as to what I can try much appreciated.

Syptoms - car dash temperature taking a very long time to show any temperature above 50c and does not reach normal operating temperature.

What I have so far tried which has not made a difference-

  • replaced the water pump with a complete unit including new thermostat (including draining and replacing coolant)

  • replaced the coolant tempeature sensor at radiator return

Also live data shows same coolant reading as the dashboard so I dont think it can be the instrument cluster.

Car is 2014 1.4 tsi 140bhp 118k miles. Owned from 30k miles.

thanks

DSG gearbox?

Do you know your engine code?

Can be found on a sticker on cambelt top cover, or as first characters of engine number on V5c.

CHPA on v5

Thanks

I have found Febi 106571 Coolant Temperature Sensor which might be ok??

If where I think it is located at back of engine bit tricky to reach. Also, it looks like a flat hexagon head bolt not a torx type

Armed with the engine code I thought I'd find the location for you by scrutinising photos of Ebay listings for that engine.

They often have good quality pics from all different angles.

Only on my phone screen just now, and I haven't spotted it yet. Sorry.

I am pretty sure at back somewhere near under the turbo actuator. Best I could find was a VW polo video on you tube but note sure same engine etc.

How hot is the air coming out of the vents? Very hot or lukewarm?

If i turn it to max on the heating control then it will come out very hot once been on for a bit.

I am not sure with the hot weather at the moment if I can tell if hot without selecting max

I recently had the same issues with a 2015 Golf MK7 1.4 tsi 125 bhp, very similar vehicle and engine. Replacing Temp sensor did cure it.

The Bilstein Temp sensor you have identified appears to be correct for both this and the Octavia.

It is at the back of the cylinder head (i.e. towards the bulkhead) towards the left end (i.e. gearbox end). Pretty well hidden by pipework and turbo stuff so that access from the top is very difficult.

Working from underneath the car I could see it. There is a curved plastic shield which curves part way round the drive shaft, mounted by two bolts. Once that shield was removed I was able to reach an arm up behind the engine to get at the sensor. If I remember rightly it was secured by single bolt with 10mm hex head. I replaced mine with a Lucas branded one from NAPA but the O ring of the new one leaked so I had to take it out again and fit the old O ring with the new sensor . Note that there is a small "support ring" also fitted between the O ring and the cylinder head and this may or may not come out with the sensor. It can be removed with a small pick or spring hook ( or a tiny cranked end on a straightened paper clip ! ). If everything else is still in place you will lose very little coolant doing this without draining the system. A bit fiddly getting the securing bolt back in but you can do it this way. Sorry no photos, I did this job a few months ago.

Good Luck.

PS. Please post back here to let me know if it works - then others will know this is a viable solution.

I managed to swap the engine coolant sensor over and it has cured the issue.

It was easy to access from underneath. Thanks for suggesting that.

I couldn't manage to get the original o ring seal out so re used.

Thanks for reporting the outcome so others have a solution !

Nice Job - Shame about the O-ring !
