"OEM+" suspension upgrades? Looking at buying an MY21 Superb B8

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My old man has been looking at buying a "B8.5" Superb MY20-MY22. I know these cars fairly well as the company I work for has plenty of these, so I've driven more than I can count.

However, I found that in all the L&K, SE L models that I've driven I did not like the suspension. I think it rebounds too much and sort of continues to bounce after going over bumps. My dad is coming from a C7.5 Audi A6 saloon, and I drive an Audi S5. I know you can't expect the Superb to match Audi's 5-link but slightly firmer suspension would be nice.

My question is; does the sportline fix this? ie. does the sportline have stiffer suspension than the other trims? And if I was to score a nicely specced L&K for him, could I swap Passat or Arteon shocks, springs, and anti roll bars onto it considering the Superb has a longer wheelbase and more weight over the rear axle (especially iV)? Has anyone done this before? He's not looking for the car to be lowered as it'll be a daily driver, and won't consider a Passat or Arteon over the Superb, they just don't have enough interior space.

Thanks.

Not a bad idea - and not sure if the Passat or Arteon will be a straight swap. But you could easily chuck on some Bilstein B6 with standard springs. That will sort out the rebound without lowering.

Can also recommend a stiffer rear roll bar. I'd actually do that before anything else.

The L&K should have DCC so you can adjust the dampers to your preference. There's a vcds mod that opens the fixed presets to a slider. I think it allows greater high and low limits too.

Same hardware (shocks, springs & module) between Superb, Passat and Arteon.

Wat differs is the DCC shocks software (algorithm) on the DCC Module, used between the various cars.

Hence the "DCC Mod" that a number of us have done.

The DCC Mod loads the DCC suspension algorithm parameter file from the Arteon/Passat to the Superb's DCC module.

It fixed the Superb's suspension and ride - 100%.

This mod requires a Gateway update, DCC parameter file and a DCC Recalibration.

I’d love to have DCC slider mod done but can’t seem to find anyone.

If anyone knows someone that can, please do shout on here!

I'm another L&K owner that would love the DCC slider mod!

Thanks mate, I didn't know L&K had DCC as standard. Any info on the DCC mod itself? Admitedly I don't have VCDS which I should have bought when I got my Audi but better late than never.

So general consensus is if I get him an SEL then bilstein B6, if I get him an L&K then DCC mod and rear ARB is the way to go? What about Sportline then? Are they good out of the box?

Also @travs a bit off topic but what's your experience been like with mtec discs? I've been looking at a set of c-hooked discs for my S5 and I've been told to avoid because of quality control issues. Do you push your car hard or track it? Any QC or overheating issues with them at all? For the price I'd love to try a set out since my factory Audi discs & brembo pads haven't put up well with my driving style.

Cheap and cheerful tbh - don’t be drawn in on price. For braking performance you’re probably just as likely to get decent performance with standard discs and a better pad. I thought I’d relive youth with grooved and drilled and the grooves are just a bit much tbh. Braking is not noticeably better. I’ve not tracked but approaching a dual carriageway roundabout with the car full to the brim and the pedal has to be pushed more and the sound gets much more intrusive.

I’ve actually got some replacements ready to go on still standard size:

Front: SHW Performance Golf Clubsport fronts. These are interesting as they are similar to 2piece but are fixed. It means there is better airflow through the disc. SHW have been making OE for Germans for donkey’s years. They got bought by investors who obvs realised a Performance arm could tap into the aftermarket market. Seem to be same as OE.

Rear: I’ve got VBT “Clubsport reps” just so they look the same.

Pads I went for Ferodo DS2500 which aren’t compliant with ECE R90 because (I believe) they don’t heat up quick enough because they’re used for higher performance applications.

The ATE ceramic pads are great for hardly any dust. Months can go by and you don’t notice the wheels getting darker. Someone on here has reported them chewing up his discs though.

Have also got some HEL braided brake hoses ready to go on too.

Main thing if not going for bigger (I did look at some of the other model VAG replacements with staying the same but with more pistons but decided against) is cooling. Hence the RS3 brake ducts (very cheap and easy) and now the CS reps. I also looked at RS3/TTRS brake shields but decided it wasn’t worth it.

TLDR - Mtec aren’t worth it tbh

Re DCC SLIDER mod - don’t worry, you need VCPro or ODIS to do it.

It involves a new file for the bus to separate the pressure rates from 3 settings to 15; and a new file for the shocks to receive and interpret those new 15 values. Just seems to be impossible to find someone although I’m not sure there isn’t an option to do it remotely…

No, they're just as bad as the others. Fixed by a set of Bilsteins.

L&K normally come with DCC as standard.

Sportline, if fitted with DCC, uses the same DCC shocks, same algorithm. Just different Sportline springs.

Hence Sportline with DCC will also benefit from the DCC Mod.

The DCC Mod is only possible on factory DCC modules. They r not applicable to the Bilstein Active Dampers.

Bilstein Active dampers can only control compression, unlike the DCC shocks which can control both compression and rebound.

In addition, if u have DCC, i do not recommend replacing/deleting it with aftermarket shocks as u'll end up affect steering, headlights & ABS because they're all interlinked.

The ideal setup is DCC Shocks, Eibach Pro-kit springs, rear swaybar and DCC Mod, with a DCC Recalibration procedure at the end - ur set up for a comfortable and controlled ride....even on 19" wheels.

I will report soon, I got them to fit in mine, the current ones are very vry dusty, maybe the original ones ... 55k km now

I am wondering on what JR wrote above .... if is so complicated to find Odis Modus and Otis to get this forsaken slider mod done, what about stuffing the entire Passat/Arteon module "as is" and see? Probably will need only VCDS for adaptation, or again is "protected"?

I do not even know tow hom to ask ... but I could look in the breakers for a module.

The thing about standard is the shocks are prone to leaking. And they don’t seem any cheaper than aftermarket. My first leak is at just under 28,000 miles so I either start replacing individual corners at a time, or axles perhaps, or swap the whole lot out (I’ve gone for the latter hoping I get longevity).

Seat/Skoda were supplied by Monroe whereas Audi/VW were supplied by KYB. Could be the latter were better built if they have fewer incidences of leaking so putting those in may result in lower replacement frequency.

Can't do that unfortunately as u'll still need the Gateway module to be updated (via VCP or ODIS) to enable the car to handle/understand the 15 DCC profiles.

all reports which i have seen were about Mk3 not Mk3.FL 2020+

if Monro's shocks are ok, what is rare, and programming instruction is clear, then 15 profiles mod is an option

in other cases Bilstein shocks + stiffer Eibach Pro springs without programming (only optional adaptation)
