Brake pad change with EPB

Featured Replies

Hi all how do I change brake pads front and rear with electronic parking brake.

You don't need any device to do the front, but you need a wind back tool like

OBD11 etc to wind the piston in to change the pads

So you can't wind rear piston back with a manual tool like me old skoda mk3.

No, the EPB gets very upset if you wind them back by any method other than using the module to command the motor to wind the pads back.

Having done my rears recently OBD11, Pro Subscription is required. Also credits if using the ‘apps’. After letting off the EPB I found first one really tough to use manual wind back tool to create enough clearance. The other side was much less of an issue.

No

I've just done my on my 2020 mk3 superb, I used obd11, you don't need a subscription (I don't have one) as there's an app that does it, costs 10 credits each time you use it, once in service mode you then push the piston in as normal, on the superb the piston pushed back in rather than wound in, think you may have issues if you wound it in.

Once it's back together use the app to close the epb, mine all worked fine with no issues.

so you dont prefere do it manually with small torx bit, just turn it clockwise to the end. after replacing pads, pull parking brake first to pistons go out and then use main brakes pedal to do it on all 4 wheels. i am planning to do that for about 6 months, i buyed ATE rotore and all ate cramic pads. my brakes are on 50% but i like eay that ceramic works. no dust.

here s procedure my mechanic describe..

Handbrake:

when you tighten the small torx shaft, put back the cylinder and install the pads, put back the housing, do the same for the second wheel and then just get in the car, turn on the ignition and tighten and release the parking brake a couple of times, and it will adjust itself, that means you do both wheels and then only turn on the ignition and the rest. Everything just comes back when you activate the parking brake, it will return the cylinders to the end and you then pump the oil with your foot.

My 2021 Octavia needed the SFD unlock which as confirmed with OBD11 over chat required pro subscription. No issues once I paid for that - could then use the one time apps at 10 credits a time. I found no discernible movement in the pistons unless it was ‘wound’ - has two notches for the same.

That's great for non-EPB systems, but an EPB system will lose track of where the caliper is and in many (most) cases will error.

i never hear about that.. ofc it is automatic parking brake, i also have it on my karoq. maybe rather to spend 20 credits od OBD11?

some people just use 12V electricity from some battery and 2 wires and drive pistom in or aut.. not a big deal..

OK will the front pistons retract in service mode or do I have to just manual push them in

Service mode is only for the EPB.

Front pads don't need anything special, just push them in.

The rears had the notches as mentioned above but after the epb was in service mode the superbs pushed in easily using a wind back tool with a flat adaptor, so no piston rotation (probably teaching you to suck eggs but just make sure your fluid caps off before hand) it may well be different on the MK4 Octavia though or vary between models, my superbs a 272 so identical to the golf r

If I buy an odis scan tool can I apply for a account to get codes from VW to unlock fds2 if so what are the cost for such account.

  • 2 weeks later...

On my 2021 RS TDI 4x4 i did not get the OBDeleven to work on EBP, but it was not nessasary to reset the EPB, just pushed piston back the old school way, and everything works just fine.

I have had to use OBDeleven when changing rear brakes on Golf/Superb/Tiguan/etc many times before, so I know it was not user fault.

This is what I got from obdeleven.

Thank you for reaching out to the OBDeleven team.

Electronic parking brakes can be retracted with a One-Click App or via manual coding with the PRO plan. So you can purchase the NextGen device with additional credits or a PRO plan subscription.

One-Click App will cost 10 credits, but you'll need to use One-Click App 3 times to Open/Close/Test the Electronic Parking Brake (30 credits in total).

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

You don't need to use the test option, once closed (using the app) just test the epb button functions as normal
