Help with wiper arm

Featured Replies

Hello

I recently fitted one of there clips on my Roomster. It was purchased from Halfords.

It can be done without removing the whole unit but it's a bit more of a fiddle due to the space you have to work in.

Is was not particularly easy and it took me two attempts.

The clips are quite hard to open to enable them to slide over cup and locate at the back of the remains of the ball the fits in the cup.

I did read somewhere the the clips available on the internet are easier to fit.

Short answer, it could work and is ceirtainly worth trying considering the low cost.

I thought of doing this when my drivers side wiper stopped wiping. The bearing for that wiper had detatched just like on yours. But in the end i ended up buying new parts. OEM parts has the mechanism and motor welded together (on my fabia atleast). So would have been a 600ish EUR part. Instead i got new not oem parts where theyre seperate, motor was 160EUR (old wasnt broken, but was welded to the mechanism) and the mechanism was 40EUR. Fiddly to replace, but my wipers work again now.

Even if the clips doesnt work for you and parts have to be replaced they are great for avoiding that issue happening again on the new parts.

Parts i got was these you should be able to find similar in the UK.

These guys also sells a part with both the mechanism and motor, but it is far more expensive, no idea why. Cheaper than new part from VAG dealership though.

The seperate links are available from LLL parts.

You have to get the part numbers from the originals to order the correct parts.

I was going to go down this route if the clips didn't work.

Update

So I rang my local independent Skoda mechanic and they ordered the parts in for me - they came the same day and are about £5 each.

The drivers side is 5J0.955.325

Passenger side is 5J0.955.326

========

There are YouTube videos on disassembly but on my 2010 Fabia it was as follow.

Lift the caps off the wipes with a flathead scredriver.

Use a socket set or spanner to undo a nut on each washer to disconnect- remember which is left/right.

Open the bonnet and just above the bonnet there are 2 plastic nut type things - use a spanner to undo them - they are just just 'nut heads' - when you undo them the bolt part is stuck to the car if that makes sense. On other cars I have seen different screw systems being used.

Life up the black casing which is between the windscreen and bonnet. Under that is the linkage mechanism. The windscreen washer pipes are under the black casing. I left mine connected and just left the casing on the engine. If you shut the bonnet you can get slightly better access to work on the linkage mechanism but that black casing will be in the way unless you disconnect the washer wires so you can fully remove it and shut the bonnet totally. In my case I just left it on the engine and shut the bonnet on top.

Note - you can put your wipers on if you need to get the mechanism to move into an easier to access configuration.

==========

I put them the new linkages in and they worked fine for just under 4 weeks but on the drive home last Friday the drivers one went again. On inspection I I can see the rubber bit that holds the metal ball has worn out!

So I ordered those clips as per my OP. They are similar to the ones on Amazon but just designed slightly different.

I couldn't fit them in situ so I undid the 2 bolts on the wiper mechanism thingy (either side) and then 4 torx screws to disconnect the motor. I was able to take the mechanism out without taking the motor out of the car itself and I didn't need to disconnect the motor wiring.

I managed to get the clips on quite easily - there is a knack. I ended up cutting down a bit of the washer as the clip has to go into the same gap.

The clip is not a tight fit - but I am hoping if the linkage comes out it will hold it there by gravity??

If this doesn't work then I could maybe buy a new kit, a new genuine linkage if mine not genuine or maybe screw a hold through and put a bolt or something in?

Just to add - this is what it looks like

The way I could do it is put the open part in first and then use a screwdriver to stretch the other part over. Its easier said than done in situ in the car though.

I managed to fit them with the motor in situ with some clips I ordered off eBay.

I think the key to it is you put the clip onto the ball first (the long arm is off) - you then force the long arm in using its leverage to push the clip down and squeeze the long arm in.

I think I was trying it the other way round by trying to push the clip in when the logn amr was connected
