Groaning noise from rear brake when reversing

Featured Replies

Has anybody else encountered this on thier Skoda (in particular Fabia vRS)?

This is/was a common problem across the VAG range. Audi had the same problem on the A3. They issued a bulletin and a damper weight was fitted to the rear brake caliper to stop the noise.

I'm guessing they assumed dealers could fob off the lesser brands.

I have the same problem and im trying to get the part numbers of the damper kits for the A3. They should fit the Ibiza/Fabia so when I've found em i'll let you lot know.

They are quite easy to fit, the are just a rubber donut bush that bolts onto the caliper around the handbrake linkage.

I'll keep you lot informed.

Cheers

Ross

I suspect it's to do with the location of the caliper in relation to the disc. The rubber bush will (I think) just deaden the sound rather than eradicate it. I don't suffer from this problem in the Octy, although the brakes have a tendancy to 'attach' themselves to the discs when the car has been standing for a few days - resulting an a bit of a knock when moving off. Mostly the rears rather than the fronts.

It was left for a couple of weeks once and the ABS got all confused until the rust had been removed from the surface of the discs.

Yeah the bush is a damper so it doesnt cure the problem as such, just makes it less noticeable.

mine does this groaning also. i think i'd be interested in this fix as i do a lot of reversing on my job. lol.

Mine does this, quite badly, even after being parked in the multi-storey for a working day.

I tried 'dragging' the brakes while I drove up through the car park, to heat up the pads and discs slightly to ensure they were completely dry, but this made no difference at all. Makes me cringe everytime it happens :(

Mine too! Doesn't do it all the time, but is an awful sound when it does happen! Would be interested in that part Ross if it does help deaden the noise down! :D

Surely this is a warranty job?

All the Fab RS's are only a matter of a few months old, i'd be bouncing back to the dealers if i were you. ;)

It would only be a warranty job if Skoda had the bulletin or knew of the rectification.

As I think it was an Audi only one they may not be able to get the parts.

What I will do is see if I can fix the problem then contact my dealer and/or Skoda UK.

Bulletin or not i still think i'd be hassling the dealer to fix it. I dont see why you should spend

Oh I agree with you.

I'll order the parts though work. Then If I know the parts cure the problem i've got a better case for the dealer.

I know if I take it back i'll get the usual "its perfectly normal, happens on all Fabia's" line.

If I can go to them and say, heres a problem, this cures it, then they can sort something out for other customers.

Good on ya then,

Hope you invoice them for doing their job for them ;)

Mine does it (the groaning, not the sticking) but it's not life or death so I've never really been bothered.
