Tyre size

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a 2025 2.0tsi sportline estate, and with the time of year, I stuck my winter tyres on it (215/55/17) however it looks like they are not round anymore, and my previous superb (220 2.0 tsi) ,combined with my heavy right foot has mangled the tread and worn them badly on the edges.

I fancy moving to all season tyres rather then dedicated winters, however my preferred choice (crossclimate 3) isn't yet available in that size.

They are available in 225/50/17, and as far as I can tell that isnt an ideal size, as there is approx 1.5% between 215/55/17 and 225/50/17. Is that enough to be worried about, or should I just get on with it?

Thanks

I have on CrossClimate 3,s on my EV and not as good as i thought they would be. Maybe look at CrossClimate 2 or SUV Or CrossClimate 3 Sport, , or go Pirelli Cinturato AS SF3.

  • Author

The Crossclimate 3 Sport, is only available in 18" and up.

I did look into the Pirelli as it seems to get good reviews, but i cant find anywhere that has it for sale.

In what way are you finding the Crossclimate 3 not up to your expectations?

I have had CrossClimate, CrossClimate +, SUV & 2,s Alpin 6 (Great) etc etc. OK, but last winter i used Maxxis AP3. Great in Snow and cold / wet. The CrossClime 3 are OK, just not anything special. If the weather was to be worse and i was travelling more i would be putting Snow Tyres on. For all year and south of Perth CrossClimate 3,s probably perfectly good but so are CrossClimate 2,s. . ATS Euromaster for the Pirelli. They are Self Sealers. & Michelin own ATS Euromaster. But the online prices can be cheaper than the Fitting Centre offers.

MyTyres!!!!!

I checked black circles, knew there was another site but couldn't remember it! thanks for jogging my memory

I was going to start anew discussion thread but maybe I can piggyback on this one?

I plan to buy a set of winter rims and tyres for our new Superb 2.0 TSI 4x4 265PS Estate that we have coming in March. When I asked the dealer about a winter tyre and rim set, they said that they couldn't source this at present.

We travel every winter to Austria and it is mandatory to have snowchains on board, even though I have never needed to use chains on any AWD / 4x4 car we have owned. I have read that the restricted space for the running gear means that the maximum rim size is 17" because this results in a narrower tyre with more space behind the tyre for the chain links.

I don't need to source the rims and tyres together. Normally I source the tyres myself using online suppliers.

How have you guys sourced your rims. Any advice? I appreciate this is rarely needed by most UK owners but, since this would be a common requirement in many of Skoda's European markets, it seems a bit odd that my dealer is perplexed by this?

Thanks, in advance.

@Carlston might be able to show where you might get rims, or Tyre / Rim sets.

Thanks Evolution 13. I was about to send a PM to him with the link to this thread, requesting some help. Unfortunately, I haven't yet reached the required minimum of 20 posts to allow PMs, although this one makes it 19 😉.

I will wait for a few days. The car doesn't come until March and I have all Summer before I need to finalise this. I just read your thread and thought it might be good to ask.

Appreciate your reply. Thanks again.

As you can see in the extract from the Superb MK4 owner's manual below, there are two Skoda approved wheel sizes that are suitable for the use of snow chains, ie. 215/60R16 7Jx16 ET43 and 215/55R17 7Jx17 ET43. Bear in mind, that Skoda also has a 7.5Jx17 ET41 rim for the Superb MK4 and that size rim is not approved by Skoda for snow chains...so attention does need to be paid to the rim width and offset, as well as the tyre size...when selecting winter wheels.

Look in the Skoda alloy rim accessory catalogue for reasonable price alloy rims...although some Czech websites such as "skoda eshop cz" are good at displaying most of the alloy rims that Skoda have in their "Skoda alloy rim accessory catalogue". Skoda uses this catalogue to compete on price with aftermarket alloy rims...hence the generally competitive prices.

Technical data and specifications (from Superb MK4 owner's manual)

Permitted rim and tyre combinations for mounting snow chains:

Tyre dimensions

7J×16 ET43

215/60R16

7J×17 ET43

215/55R17

Only use snow chains with links no larger than 13 mm, including locks.

@Carlston , what can I say? Thank you so much. I have been an active member of several forums since 2003 - Ford Galaxy, Volvo XC90 & XC60, Jaguar F-Pace and RR Velar - but your knowledge of Skoda is quite incredible, especially the ET41 rim waiting to trap the unwary!

I will check this all out and ensure we have the right 17" rims with winter rubber wrapped around them in good time for next Winter's Alpine adventure.

Best wishes and thanks again.

David

If you download the wheel and tyres brochure from Skoda directly they also provide this information.

This will give you the officially homologated rim sizes and compatible tyres.

In the UK I think you can still fit any tyre size you want to the car even if it's not matching the official figures.

However in many countries in Europe, you will not pass your MOT without official work and tyre sizes.

I'm not sure how the snow chains law work in Austria or France but you can also consider the hybrid chains (socks with plastic chains) which are much thinner and will fit into the slightly tighter places...

@Gabbo , thank you. I think I am almost there. A fairly ordinary set of Crystal 17" rims will hopefully do the trick. We live in Scotland and the sheer volume of road salt scattered during Winter is harsh on the rims. A simple silver painted design is more resistant to corrosion than anything lacquered or fancy. It's not the most flattering look for the car but Winter isn't the season for photoshoots anyway, the tyres will be cheaper, same with the chains and the slightly narrower profile will help penetrate the snow for grip.

I will get a set of chains. They're not too expensive for the Superb and don't take up much room in their little box. This is one of the happy outcomes compared to our current RR Velar - the tyres and Spider Spikes are eye-wateringly expensive and those Spider Spikes come in a massive holdall. This is one of the things I will be grateful to leave behind when we sell our Velar - the complexity, the weight and the expense. Oh, and the underwhelming customer service experience despite the palatial glass, marble and leather laden showrooms.

One final practical point. The Czech online store displays prices, these being actually very good value. The UK equivalent does not. It simply allows me to add items to my wishlist, rather than a shopping basket. It then advises me to share the wishlist with a dealer who will provide prices. I have a hunch that this isn't going to be such good value as the Czech online store 🫣.

The car should be delivered in March so I have plenty of time, although the supply of Winter tyres is seasonal, understandably.

Thanks again everyone.

...Crystal 17" rims...

If you mean the non-standard (for the Superb MK4) 6Jx17 ET48 alloy rims from the Octavia MK3, then perhaps also consider non-standard (for the Superb MK4) 6.5Jx17 ET41 alloy rims from the Superb MK3.

These have the same ET41 offset that the Superb MK4 7.5Jx17 ET41 rims have, but they have a 1" smaller rim width at 6.5". With the 215/55R17 tyre size, a 7.5" rim width doesn't offer much protection for the rim from kerbing damage because the tyre's sidewalls don't bulge out much.

As you can see in the ETRTO chart below, 215/55R17 can be fitted to a rim width between 6" and 7.5". Out of the four allowable rim width fo the 215/55R17 tyre size, my preference would be 6.5" followed by 7".

One owner mentioned that their alloy rims from the "skoda alloy rim accessory catalogue" cost about 20% more at UK VAG dealers compared to the online Czech price. However, one owner purchased from "skoda parts com" where the website claims that they are set up to pay the UK VAT. Prices at "skoda parts com" seem to be similar to "skoda eshop cz", although unlike "skoda parts com", "skoda eshop cz" don't appear to be setup to ship to the UK.

It's best to purchase winter tyres in the summer, or at least by September...because demand and prices increase dramatically from October onwards.

For the 215/55R17 tyre size, my preference would be a 6.5" rim width rather than the slightly wider 7" rim width. The 0.5" narrower 6.5" rim width provides better protection for the rim from kerbing damage because the tyre's sidewalls bulge out a little more.

@Carlston , thank you again for your detailed reply.

I will take a closer look at this because your point about kerbing risk is well made. The car will travel on Le Shuttle cross-Channel. My heart sinks when the guy directs us onto the upper deck because it is so narrow. That alone makes a little further research worthwhile.

I will also check the different suppliers and I agree that, providing the winter tyres are in stock, buying them during the summer makes sense too.

Thank you again.

You will find any SKoda Official wheels will be very expensive compared with aftermarket alternatives.

You can get nice looking aftermarket wheels much less than €100 that look great and as they are cheaper, you don't need to worry about dings and scratches.

These are the 17" wheels I got for the winter here which were ~€800 for wheels & premium tyres (Conti Wintersports)

Interesting…..

Are these cast alloy?

I was looking at some on line from a company in the Manchester or Leeds area (I think).

Apart from receiving glowing reviews, there were a significant of reviews that totally disagreed, with comments like:

Very rough casting finish

Cracks around the rim and others.

Hopefully it’s a different supplier your looking at, and your experience is great.

It put me off to be honest, I was considering buying a set for All Season tyres. Sadly SHMBO, has found a different path for the money 😥

I forgot to add.

Those wheels look very nice indeed. A great improvement on the Dofeda on my SE L

Edited by Trickiejohn

They were Borbet V wheels I think.

I didn't noticed any rough finished or had any problems with them.

They are also homologated for the Superb so I received the type approval certificate with them for the Swiss TuV for free.

I got them from one of the big online sites, delivered with fitted tyres but can't see to find the emails from my order at that moment.

For my last few sets of winter wheels, i have just bought a set of second hand rims the right size from ebay/gumtree etc, and then fitted the tyres i want, at the moment i have some Audi wheels, and just needed a set of PCD adaptors so they fit correctly.

As for the tyre size

i assume this means i can move from 215/55/17 to 225/50/17 without too much issue?

225/50R17 or 225/55R17 could be used instead of 215/55R17, as shown in the chart below.

As the car's speedo over-reads slightly on standard tyres, it would make sense to use 225/55R17 instead of 225/50R17.

My preference for 225/50R17 and 225/55R17 would be 7" wide rims. With 6.5" wide rims, I would stick to 215/55R17.

225/50R17 656.8mm (Between 1.1% and 2.1% smaller than standard tyre sizes)

225/55R17 679.3mm (Between 1.3% and 2.2% bigger than standard tyre sizes)

Is there an “option” to tell the car you’ve changed wheel/tyre sizes?

Over estimating speed is safer than understand stating I think 🤔

This is the main reason to stick with the manufacturer recommended wheel/tyres sizes as they will all give a very similar rolling circumference to ensure you will keep within the homologated vehicle speed calculation.

I don't know if you can program non standard sizes via VCSD or OBD11 ??

I wouldn't think changing the rim sizes would make much difference to the speedometer? The overall diameter of the rim and tyre is pretty much the same. As the rim size reduces doesn't the tyre wall profile increase?

I may have got this wrong and, if I have, please say. Any difference must be right at the margins.

TBH, while the 17" winter rims won't be much for the look of the car, they will compensate with a smoother and quieter ride because tyre sidewall forgiveness makes a real difference.

That is correct, however there is a bit more to it than that. The profile of a tyre is in relation to the width - so a 225/35 will be much lower profile than a 285/35. It’s a percentage of the width.

This is important as most people are tempted to make more than one change when swapping wheels. For example, they’ll go from a 7.5J wheel paired with a 225/40R18 to an 8.5J with a 245/35R19.

This would result in a 2.8% increase in diameter, compared with the 0.3% increase of going to a 225/35R19 on the same wheel.

This is why it’s important to stick to the recommended setups above. If running a setup such as the 245 profile above, you’d find that the speedo would read 70mph at 71mph, rather than 68mph at 70mph. This isn’t a huge deal, but you don’t want to stray too far from “default” setups - it’ll upset the ABS system (TPMS, TC, ESP, etc).

Hi all, Does anyone know if the TPMS sensor is inside the tyre or is it picked up from the ABS sensor. My car is a Superb 2025 2.0 TDI SE L. The manual I have shows a TPMS sensor inside the wheel, but I'm not sure. The TPMS system on my car just shows a warning light and no pressure is shown for the individual wheel.
