powerflow exhausts

Featured Replies

i heard that the furby vrs was losing power through the exhaust. i know that miltek might be able to offer one but as anybody thought of powerflow exhausts. what seems to be the restriction in the exhaust anyway? is it just the cat or is it the size of the exhaust pipe?

:drive:

I'm going the powerflow route after Jabba suggested it (mike actually)

He reckoned a 4BHP increase over my remap would not be unreasonable, as the cat does really restrict the back end of the exhaust.

I'll report when I do it, plus it's quite cheap -

let us know how you get on Jason. is it just the front box that your getting taken out?

Tom.

Just the CAT as far as I'm aware, whether this is what the front box is, I'm not sure. I thought Mike said removing the CAT would free up the "backbox" as he put it, so I assume it's the back end which is de-restricted. When it's done I'll try and get in the garage to take some piccies of it being done.

So is the cat the main problem then, rather than the whole exhaust?

I've heard of a custom exhaust releasing an extra 12bhp on a PD130 without any other tuning.

When are you thinking of getting it done Jason?

The company was www.dmsautomotive.com (not many details here though)

There is a dieselcar review here in PDF format.

Car featured has completely new exhaust, but i was wondering if just binning the cat is the main thing?

Personally I wouldnt want increased noise. Would a decat increase noise much?

Matt - Cat only, replaced by a bit of pipe. Doesn't sound that much to me but it came a lot more highly recommended from Mike @ Jabba than the air intake heatseek mod (sorry, Andy) - 4BHP minimum increase in BHP too. I think the exhaust pipe generally has a restrictive effect (best mod is no exhaust pipe at all. :D) - but getting through the cat is a major part of that restriction.

Extra noise should be minimal, as well as smoke, which may increase too. But the extra power should be worth it.

Edited to say getting it done in January sometime. Hopefully my Dad will pay for it as a birthday/Xmas joint pressie. :D

Jason,

Be aware that you if you De-cat it, this means that it is illegal if stopped you would need to refit CAT to get it tested by your local MOT station and the CEL light will come on and fault code will need clearing as the lambda sensors will be disconnected. To my knowledge there is no fix for it yet. See threads on Octavia vRS with decatted exhaust -Jon, Des, Dave. Whereas if you go for sports Cat like my Milltek system this is will pass the emissions / MOT will be quieter and will give more power than standard but not as much as deCat. Dont know if they do one yet for the VRS Fabia though.

Just thought you should know

Decat = noise..burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Aha! - I ran all this past Mike, and he said the TDI's still sailed through emmissions tests with a de-cat in place. One way to find out is I'll hook my car up to my mate's garages emissions tester (hopefully) and check a couple of weeks before the MOT test is due. Anyway, I'm fairly well re-assured that de-catting my TDI will not have repercussions (much) on emmissions.

Thanks for the thought though!

As mentioned above Fabia vRS is a diesel and therefore does not require a CAT for the MOT.

The Fabia has a single box system and a CAT which is part of the downpipe.

To decat the PD you need a new straight through downpipe. Then you can add a single rear box. Diesels dont tend to make alot of exhaust noise especially turbo'd ones so they dont require alot of exhaust silencing.

Then I wonder why they fit a Cat if it's not needed for emissions-that doesn't make a lot of sense. Colins' right about the noise though,it will be really noisy whereas my Miltek is a healthy burble normal use to bark when opened up now Jabba'd.

Note, that is of course a petrol engine...not sure about oil lumps, Ross I think might be right. The block it'self is after all quite a noisy affair.

Give it a go ;)

Powerflow decat on mine is quite loud, louder at points than the miltek sports high flow, but top end it apparantly sounds very similar, it's the low down burble...Put it this way, I can feel the double glazing move when SWMBO set of for work this morning....now I feel bad for coming in past midnight each night this week.

They aint much noiser. I fit decats and full stainless systems every week at work to PD Golfs/Leon.

A standard diesel engine in the Fabia doesnt make much noise and thats why they only have a sinlge box to start with.

Ross how much difference would a decat make to a TDi?

So theres only one box then and the cat itself?

Diesels produce less Co and NOx then petrols so the need for a cat is reduced on a diesel.

Obviously its better to have a CAT on a diesel car for environmental reasons than not to have a cat, its just not a legal requirement :)

On the Fabia yeah, single box and the CAT in the downpipe.

They do make a difference on a remapped car, usually about 4-5 bhp but feels smoother.

The diesel CAT is only a two way convertor (as opposed to a three way on a petrol engine) and isnt much more than a particulate filter.

Ross do you know whether you could have a straight through pipe and just leave the back box? i had a decat on my old hdi 206, powerflow did that, only cost me

I dont see why not.

Well TBH (excuse my drunk typing) but I'd like a little more of a burble from the ehaust, something I've been missing since I bought a TDI in the first place....

Anyway, if Miek says my var will pass emmissions post powerflow, and Ross says my car will pass emmissions post powerlfow, then I'm doublt reasurred it's a good path to floow for my next mod to my Fabia.

Merry Xmas and all other greetings that several pints of stout allow! :dtp: :D

edit: just how ****ed WAS my typing? :D bad errors!!!
