Could high oil level cause my engine runaway?

Featured Replies

Hi me again 👋

This follows on from my earlier post about a possible blown turbo oil seal on my 1.6tdi.

When I went to collect the car from the garage this evening where it was going to be MOTed, but they ended up looking for the cause of the runaway, they said it’s definitely the turbo failed as there was lots of oil in the intake, BUT the oil level was also high (they said 1cm too high).

By chance I got chatting to a guy outside who turns out to be a VAG specialist and told him about my runaway issue.

He said it’s likely to be turbo seals BUT it could be the oil over full being sucked up through a breather into the intake.

So after we towed the car back to my mates unit I checked levels properly.

Turns out it’s way higher than I or the garage noticed it seems (see pic, it’s up

to my finger).

Could this be the cause and my turbo may be ok after all??

Current symptoms:

  • There was never any smoke or loss of power prior to the engine runaway,

  • It drove perfectly for 20 mins before the runaway occurred.

  • The runaway occurred while I gave it a boot full while going up a hill,

  • After the engine was shut down, I tried a start and it ran fine but did try and runaway again as there is obviously still oil in the system.

  • The garage had the car idling during the day with no issues or any smoke. They did not rev it!

  • When I collected the car at the end of the day I did have to start it and drive it to turn it around before being towed across town. There was no issues or smoke at all.

My next plan is to drain the oil to the correct level and clean out all the hoses going to the inlet. Probably check the intercooler too. Is there anything else I should check/clean?

Thanks all,

Fingers crossed 🤞

From a problem solving perspective I would do this - and nothing else - before testing the car again. If you 'fix' allsorts and the car works OK you will not be able to identify the original problem uniquely.

If the oil level is upto your finger thats very high. Its either been overfilled by a lot or something is raising the level. If it was water it would be emulsified so wonder if diesels getting in somewhere which would make oil very thin and explain the run on.

It is the correct dip stick?

diesel fuel of multiple unfinished regenerations od DPF filter..

It could also be a leaky injector/injectors.

️ a little update for you all!

Well after realising the oil level was high, last night I dumped all the oil out to see how much by!
To my surprise there was about 8.5 litres in there!! That’s about double!! 😮.

It also smelt of diesel and was thin like water so likely cause would be long term failed Regens by driving lots of short journeys. Yes it could be a failed injector but it still drive really smoothly so is looking less likely.

I also had all the turbo pipes off and drained the small amount of oil in the intercooler as best as I could.
I did find that the oil starts in the system from the crank case breather, which is BEFORE the turbo, so is now looking less likely the turbo seals are at fault 🤞.

So it now has the correct amount of new oil and a new filter. It now runs so much quieter but I haven’t taken it for a drive yet.

Fingers crossed this may have sorted it 🤞

Thanks all for your advise 😎👍

I would monitor it regularly and see. Keep the oil as its excellent for soaking seized parts. I use a 50/50 mix of oil and diesel with a bit of kerosene if its too thick in it as a releasol. Saves a fortune on wd40 etc.

️ Another little update.

Taken for a test drive after the oil and filter was changed and all the pipes cleaned out!

Well it seems perfect! 👌 🤞

Drives smooth and pulls like a train with absolutely no smoke!

Im very happy and it’s now booked back in for another MOT next week!

Glad its still ok and hopefully a one of. Your lucky it stopped when it did. Good luck with MOT. With that amount of diesel in oil at least the engine will have been given a good flush out and be nice and clean.
