Skoda Scala 2021 1.0 TSI 95cv – Intermittent clutch problem, gears won't engage

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a 2021 Skoda Scala 1.0 TSI 95 HP with a manual gearbox and approximately 88,000 km.

I'm experiencing an intermittent clutch problem and would like to know if anyone has experienced something similar.

The problem:

Sometimes, when I'm slowing down to approach a junction or roundabout, the clutch pedal suddenly feels much lighter than normal and I cannot engage any gear.

To get it working again, I have to slow the car down until it is almost completely stopped and press the clutch pedal again. After that, everything returns to normal and I can select gears without any problems.

Additional observations:

  • The problem happens randomly, not on every journey.

  • Most of the time, the clutch works perfectly.

  • With the engine switched off, all gears engage normally.

  • I tested the clutch pedal by pressing it several times and holding it down for 60 seconds. I noticed no loss of resistance during this test.

  • The problem temporarily disappears after slowing down and pressing the clutch again.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with the Skoda Scala or another VW Group vehicle with the 1.0 TSI engine?

Could this be related to the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, or another part of the hydraulic system?

If anyone has experienced this problem and found a solution, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thank you in advance!

Sounds like clutch hydraulics are failing somewhere. Keep an eye on brake fluid level as the clutch and brakes share the same reservoir. Check to see if clutch/ brake fluid is where it shouldn't be - eg peel back rubber seals on master and/or slave. If not sure then get both the master and slave cylinders changed.

I had similar symptoms with Mrs BJ's Panda- had both ends changed, all good now.

Yes, I experience that too, but very rarely and intermittently.

Try pumping the clutch pedal?

Keep us posted.

Mine is same model as yours.

Thank you for your replies!

I have already taken the car to a mechanic for an initial inspection.

We checked the brake/clutch fluid reservoir while pressing the clutch pedal. There was no noticeable movement of the fluid, and we couldn't find any visible external leaks.

The clutch pedal also maintained normal resistance when pressed repeatedly and held down for approximately 60 seconds.

However, the problem still occurs intermittently while driving.

Could the clutch master cylinder be failing internally, even without any visible fluid leaks?

Has anyone experienced this and managed to identify the exact cause?

Thanks again for your help!

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, I have seen other posts with similar clutch issue without loss of fluid.

Very likely to be an internal fault with master or slave cylinder seals - best to try replacing the master first - especially if slave is the internal type.

I think the slave cylinder is the external type with the small cc petrol versions so very easy/cheap to replace. It should be visible sitting on top of gearbox.

Thank you, bigjohn!

I have already located what appears to be the external clutch slave cylinder, underneath the battery area, on top of the gearbox.

This is good news, as it should make replacement much easier.

I'm planning to have both the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder checked before replacing any parts.

I'll keep everyone updated once I find the cause of the problem.

Thanks again for your help!

If I was a betting man (I'm not!) I'd say it'll be the slave. My previous Superb had a "funny" feel at one point that turned out to be a valve within the slave cylinder. Replacement restored normal service.

Hi there. My son has had what feels like an almost identical issue with his 2021 1.0TSi Scala (thread at https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/541276-skoda-scala-10-tsi-2023-stiff-gear-change/). It did it for the first time in July (just after the three month warranty expired, of course!) and then did it intermittently over the summer, gradually becoming more regular (but still intermittent). Our local garage replaced the clutch master cylinder two weeks ago and fingers crossed / touch wood / God willing / etc. the issue hasn't occured again since ...

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

Really glad to hear that replacing the master cylinder seems to have fixed your son's problem!

I'm thinking of replacing both the master and slave cylinders on mine, just to be on the safe side.

Hopefully that will sort out my issue too! Fingers crossed! 🤞

Thanks again, and I hope your son's Scala stays trouble-free!

For all the cost of the slave worth doing as well. Sons mk1 Fabia clutch went and slave was like yours external. When I did the clutch I replaced it(I was going to anyway) No external leaks but the slave actuator inside bell housing rubber gator had split and there was a slight leak starting. Even though its external it can leak internally and you wont notice. If your doing it yourself the master and slave usually come with two seals. You only need one. On his Fabia its the tophat one not the oring. They have to be pushed firmly onto end of pipe until they click into place

Thanks Alasdair, really appreciate your advice!

I've already decided to replace both the master and slave cylinders, just to be on the safe side. The slave cylinder on my Scala is also external, located below the battery.

Hopefully replacing both will solve the intermittent clutch problem. I'll also make sure the mechanic checks the seals and hydraulic connections during installation.

I'll post an update once the work is done. Thanks again for your help!

Did my Octavia master a few months ago and its not that easy without garage ramps etc. Its one of those parts you can see but getting to it is another matter as the DPF is in the way. Have done three now in my Skoda cars plus my sons Fabia due to similar symptoms re gear change and its cured them all. Only one was leaking at master The other three reckon fluid was getting past seals on master an a random basis. Didi the slaves at the same time.
