Evo 9 - any thoughts?

Featured Replies

Considering a brand new Mitsubishi Evo 9, and getting rid of the Octavia and Fabia.

Now, i'm aware of the insurance/servicing costs etc, so i'm looking for any one's views on this?

The car fulfils my criteria, in that it is designed for having it's head kicked in, which is what I need :)

Anything else i should consider?

Which one Shifty FQ-340?

FQ 320

Didnt fancy the extra 3k for leather and some useless other bits and bobs really.

Do it!

You only live once and you'll always regret it when you look back if you dont do it!

Be prepared for absolutely horrendous fuel economy! Ive had one (only an Evo II) and it really was thirsty , but a truly great drive (when it was working-buying a new one with a 3 year warranty is deffo the way to go!) You will get addicted to it , Ive been in a few of the newer ones and I think the 9 does look nicer than the 8 , have a look around on www.lancerregister.com , I was a member there when I had mine , good resourse and plenty of peeps willing to give advice too. Get yourself along to the shows with them as well , theyre a good day out! Be prepared to be stared at tho , everyone knows what an Evo is , and with a new one you will get noticed (especially if you go for yellow!!) Good luck-and get yourself a Shell Optimax card! :)

A friend of mine has an evo 9 gt thats in this months banzai magazine and its a lovely car that has already most things upgraded including turbo, engine internals, brakes ,suspension and wheels, most of which was done before he even collected it from the supplier and with it been his company car then he doesn't have to pay for the servicing and running costs,he's a lucky barsteward:) , but it definately goes and handles great and if you can afford to run one then i say go for it

Cheers for that.

What's with the '112mph limited'

Looks like an awesome car (ignoring fuel etc). Not getting on with the Skuds any longer, or just fancy a change again ?

Not getting on with them really. The Fabia has been great fun, and i'd keep hold of it for a giggle, but the delay with parts etc when it breaks is annoying. The Octavia is too new, and although it goes/handles well, it's purely an A road car.

The Evo 9 is a no compromise drivers car, with a good backround. I just fancy one, and was just looking today when I saw an FQ320 in blue. I was blown away really.

Fair enough :D

Been reading up a little more since my original response, looks like that speed limiter only applies to imports, and it tends to be removed when the clocks are changed to MPH ones.

Lucky g*t :P - had a look at the fuel economy, my yearly mileage, and came to the conclusion I could buy a minimum of two Octy's a year for the fuel cost (ignoring the fact I have to buy fuel for mine). Then I do 40k+ / year :D

Take it you're gonna leave it 'standard' ?

You will get to know your dealer well with 4500 mile intervals. Don't know if they do the same 3 yr service packages they did with the 8.

You've lost me this time

The 9 has less of a zippo lighter as a fuel tank then the others, but don't expect more than 200 odd miles on 50 quids worth of optimax, if your giving it some MPG will be in the low 10's and even driving carefully will only see 22-23

As been said 4500 mile servicing, expect Discs and pads every 5K as well as Tires about the same, And the dealers have to be ralliart trained and equipped to deal with the ACD and AYC systems!

Insurance is sometimes not that bad! A year or so ago I was toying with getting a 5 (As you can't get a 6 in Dandelion Yellow :thumbdwn: and the 4 and 7 look Gash) Fully Comp for me (28yo) with 3 points was just over

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX is a fantastic driving experience - supercar performance from a 30K price tag. Apart from the running costs you will need to be prepared for:

1) Spine shattering suspension and ride

2) Excessively tiresome road and wheel noise at motorway speeds

3) A less practical and appealing cockpit area

4) Having your bowels removed each time you push down on the accelerator

If you can live with that it will be a fantastic car for you.

What's with the '112mph limited'

By law all cars sold in Japan are limited to 180kph, which is 112mph. So an import would be limited to 112mph.

None of this applies to UK cars though. ;)

My concern is the attention they attract. I'd be for ever checking my mirrors to see who was behind and it would have to be garaged at night. Otherwise I say go for it.

Some of the points you have raised I find appealing.

Points 1-4 inclusive to be exact :D

Steve - Don't be lost mate. The Octavia simply can't handle the remap. Keeps cutting boost at 5500 and making the engine nearly jump out from under the bonnet. Can't live with it anymore. Final straw was a "upgraded" part, ie the oem dv. I found one in Warrington, went and got it, had it fitted, and its no fcking differant. So, I have three options. Wait x amount of time for a part that works, detune the car and put it back to standard, which if im honest, isn't an option, or go buy something I wont feel the need to meddle with to make it how i want it.

Evo 9 seems to tick the boxes. Need to look at a Subaru Type UK yet, as that seems more of a compromise as an everyday car.

Fallen in love with a blue Evo though.

I'll have to buy a daily driver too I guess, but doesnt matter what that is. A

FFS just get one, but for the money i'd get an ariel atom or Catterum R500, and be done with it. You just want to burn up the road and track till it kills you.:)

Just to put a spanner in the works Dave what about one of these. They might be a bit cheaper to run and if you want to wait they're doing WR330 & WR360 models later on this year.

Mate as much as love my Scooby's. If you can afford the Evo with all its running costs do it!

There are a few on Scoobynet that have gone to the darkside of the force and have stayed there but there aint many that can afford them as a daily driver due to it being a thirsty beast.

If you really dont want a £500 smoker as your daily drive then get a Scooby Spec C as the running costs arent as high as an Evo.

Thats my 2p worth :D

nobody's mentioned the turning circle yet! you need a football pitch to turn it around in, but hey, I know that isn't gonna bother you! go on... buy it, but you gotta bring it to a meet to make us all see how slow our cars are tho! ;)

aren't all these comments about servicing and turning cicrles based on nothing more than a couple of minutes of tv, where topgear were driving the fq-400..?

the point is; evo's are lush, proper driving tools and if i had the money to get one, i sooo would

I say go for it if you are in a position to do so, I know i would.

You only live once so you might aswell enjoy yourself while you can!

Have you looked at the newly released FQ360? Supposedly almost as quick as the 400 but much more useable. 363ftlb at 3200rpm! That's 8ftlb more than the 400 and at 2300rpm's lower down the rev range! Available to order now for delivery in September.
