cambelt change on octy tdi

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a tatty but utterly dependable octi tdi 90bhp on a w plate. I had the cambelt changed at 90,000 3 years ago. We are know pushing 130,000. When should I get it changed again. There seems to be some disagreement as to whether the interval is 40 or 60,000 miles.

I hope I'm not wrong, but I had my 110 TDI done at 60k and is due again (quite soon) at 120k.

Threads on here suggest that a water pump change at the same time.

Just having mine done at 60k.

Also suggest getting an aftermarket waterpump (such as from Awesome) as it had metal fins, rather than the VAG one with plastic ones.

A few months ago, a magazine published an article on changing the canbelt on a 110TDi... I did not unfortuantely get a chance to buy said magazine, and can't remember what it was called, ot who published it. Anyone know (ot got a scan of the relevant pages?).

My belt was one at 60k, and will be getting done soon, as I am head fast towards 120k miles.

I'm having mine done at an independent local garage and also having the pump changed - I'm hoping the one he puts in has the metal fins. I'll ask the question I think.

He's getting them from a motor factors and are not the VAG parts... cant just remember the name of the supplier. Foreign sounding I seem to recall... not GSF.

I'm sure someone once said that the water pump on the tdi was ok?

iirc, the pump was common between petrol and diesel, and if that is the case, then it will be prone to failure.....

For probably £50 every 60k miles would you chance it?

When I priced up the work at a dealer I queried the water pump. He looked at a sheet and said that it doesnt need changing on a TDi only the petrol.

I cant understand the logic, but thats what he said. I'm having the pump changed anyway - silly not to imho.

A word of warning - I had my cambelt changed at 60k by an independent, which I thought was much cheaper than the

I remembered what I read now...

TDI s have the same type of water pump, i.e. plastic ones, but they differ from the petrol engines in that they are driven by an auxillary belt rather than the cambelt, so if they do die it's not such a big problem.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I read that but can't confirm or deny it for the 110

Water pumps are cambelt driven on all TDI engines.

Water pumps are cambelt driven on all TDI engines.

Can somebody correct honestjohn, he was the source of the confusion (i double checked)

On that note i'll be getting mine changed :)

Got mine back earlier, £293 all in. I checked and the replacement water pump was indeed the one with the metal fins - I checked out the original one and it looked in decent enough nick tbh. The guy in the garage did mention that although he hasnt had one go in an Octavia he'd had a few from Golfs

The parts used were Quinton Hazell? Anyone any idea if this is decent quality kit?

Just as some kinda idea..

Got mine back earlier,

Erm i got the same letter and just though, hmm yeah time to trade in.

The 2.0TDI is £100 cheaper to do according to that list.

Westover quoted me just under

So its a belt change at 60,000 (or 4 years) and get the water pump done too, make sure its a foriegn metal one, (check with the list member's grandparents) and if your car is out of warranty then get it done at your local mechanics. Thanks guys for clearing that up!

My mobile mechanic did the belt and tensioner at my workplace in the car park for 190 notes a couple of years back. The car is london traffic battle scarred and tatty so no point is paying main dealer prices.

My W reg 2000 110Tdi had the belt changed by the main dealer at 3 years/40k miles. i have checked back with them and they tell me that the belt they fitted was better than the original and would be good for a further 60K miles. So I should be good for 100K before needing a change.

I wouldn't leave it for more than 4 years or so, I am sure that they deteriorate with age as well as mileage.
