Just wondering how many fabia drivers turn off the esp as soon as they start the engine

I've had my car 2 years now and never switched it off and now i'm scared to incase I find out I can't actually drive.

There was a poll on this a while ago.

There is a way to even turn it off with VAG COM apparently.

I'm sure that a relay connected to the ignition live and the switch circuit could do the same thing:D

It'll save you life switched on

Madness. ESP won't hinder you in anyway unless you want to drive like a hooligan or on a track... so for normal driving, leave it on. :)

Not quite true in my experience. ESP hates bumpy roads, particularly bumpy corners. I find on the R it cuts in when it shouldnt purely cos of the bumps. I also find that if you boot it out of a junction turning at the same time it also sometimes cuts power just when you don't want it to.. especially with 4wd. :thumbdwn:

I've therefore got into the habit of turning ESP off when I know I need to make a quick exit from a junction and on certain bumpy corners when I know it is going to kick in annoyingly!

I have played with the car and felt ESP working though. The way it can brake an individual wheel so straighten up understeer or a possible tail slide is very clever, so the majority of the time I leave it on.

If your driving properly, it should never interfere, same with ABS. Even if you driving hard, feeding power on and braking smoothly shouldn't cause driver aids to be needed.

Fair enough, there will be variations in road surfaces that will make it much harder to judge grip levels, but day to day, why would you want turn it off!

Sorry if I made a mistake - of course ESP is different from ASR - I find that the throttle response is "perkier" (hmm) with ASR off. Don't have ESP (although I sometimes get a strong hunch....)

I keep the ASR on usually except when feeling particularly naughty...

my 2.0 fabia definately accelerates quicker without the asr switched on.

How do you work that one out?

Surly it will be just the same but it will control any wheelspin you might encounter?

Nope, as the ASR is IMHO not particularly great - the problem is mainly that it kicks in very hard but just too late, cutting power a fair bit. The wheel regains grip, power goes back up after that, but you've already lost momentum.

ESP was/is a lot less annoying generally. It does still kick in if you go a little crazy, and I must admit ESP does get turned off sometimes if I am in a 'bad' mood ;)

That said I've got an LSD to help with the grip too, and during cornering + planting situations that does make a very significant (positive) difference :D

I think you mean, 'It may save your life' ;)

LOL @ this thread (asr/esp) everytime it pops up

If you're spinning the wheels and losing traction you are not in control of the vehicle whether you think you are or not. The electronics do not 'cut in' annoyingly at all unless you're driving beyond available grip, which you should only do on a track or private ground. If you lose traction you HAVE ALREADY lost control, regardless of whether you think you can handle it or not.

That said I think we all have a play occasionally but it is naughty

Edit: Yes I am a grumpy fart today.

OY! that's my prerogative, you have to ask permission.:(

After the day I've had, I claim todays Grumpy title.

As regards asr, it's sometimes better left on, and it's sometimes better switched off, mostly on, but sometimes off, there.

yeah that's what it's supposed to do but i find it effects the performance tho, you dont really need asr in a car with 115bhp!!!! marketing gimick i thinks!!

I'll be honest its quite handy when pulling away on a wet roundabout when listening to music as you can't hear any wheel spin...

;)

I do indeed take it off as soon as i turn the key lol.#

edit. So why do you "drive with it on"

i dont!

But surely that's just highlighting that you can't drive a car in the wet :P:rofl:

and you can't feel it either???

I Leave it on now, Since when I first remmapped it I used to watch my tyres dissapear in a cloud of smoke!!! It was fun though!!

I think you mean, 'It may [/b']save your life' ;)

Deffo, cant rely on computers for everything.. but will lend a helping hand.

i aggree with that!!! that's the trouble with all these modern gadgets like abs, traction control, esp, etc etc..... people start to rely on them, what happens when one of them mulfunctions?? you crash!

I think you mean, 'It may [/b']save your life' ;)

It saved my life in 2004 and imo, should be standard on every car. It certainly gives you a fighting chance of keeping control of the car.

If it's on the car and is turned off whilst driving and you have an accident, I certainly would not expect the insurance company to pay out.

Unless there is a clause that says you must drive with it on at all times, then they can't refuse. ;) Anyway they wouldn't know it was off, once you crash and the ignition is off then there's no way to tell. :P
