Life expectancy of standard brake pads?

Featured Replies

My car has just had its "30,000 mile/3 year" service (28,000 miles, 2 years 7 months). The brake pads were deemed to be OK after inspection. I'm sure that my previous cars (most recently Citroen Xantias) had to have at least the front pads replaced at a similar mileage.

I'm not complaining (the longer they last, the better..), but is this typical?

brakes are entirely dependant on a) how much you use them or how heavy you are on them and B) the car's break bias, set by manufacturer.

Case in point - my Octavia, bog std 2.0, has now done almost 40k, 26k oh which I've put on it in three years, and i've gone through three sets on the front, one on the rear. :scratchch *Cough*

Thankfully, June last year, the guys in Servicing managed to get them under warranty/servicing deal.

Now i'm going to have to start paying.... :Yikes:

3 sets of front pads in 40K , seems excessive to me .........are you still on the original discs ?

I know it does, but then............

what if I was to tell you that i meant sets of discs......

So you are saying that you have gone through 3 sets of discs and pads in 40K...........if that is right , that's scary !

I use a Fabia SDi Combi as a taxi. The first set were changed at 20250 miles, but may have lasted until 25k. I then fitted Mintex replacements and now showing 65k, with by the looks of them 10k to go. That's a total of approx 55k on this set. I know, it sounds incredible! Unfortunately I dont think the discs will last that long. On previous taxis, 20k was normally the limit. I did make the mistake once of fitting a new set in a Cavalier on a Friday afternoon before a very busy shift. They cracked and were reduced to powder and I had to fit another set the next day! I suspect the first lot were faulty, mind you, I was hooning around.

My 1.6 GLX has just had its original brake pads changed at 50000 mile service.

AndyC

Swapped my pads at 10k, they were only half worn.

Since then I've had, roughly, 4 sets of front discs, 2 sets of rears, 2 sets of rear pads, and about 10 sets of front pads - all in 30 months :(

OK, I'm running race pads which eat discs and the car has now done 128,000 miles including 10,500 track miles :D

26k of mixed driving and all is well on OEM. Well, no warning light and the car still stops anyhow :D

At my 40k service I was told that the rears would need replaced at 50k. The front could go on for another 5k or so but I'll probably change the lot.

My rears are nearly dead as are the discs as I was advised at the 60k service on Friday - why they didn't just change them I don't know - never mind. The fronts are still OK apparently so I guess there has been at least one set on there before I bought the car. I've done the last 34k miles on the same discs and pads.

K, can you advise me what the minimum disc thickness is for my SLX? I may just do them myself.

On my 2.0 Bora Sport with auto box I am still on standard original pads and discs front and rear after 93k miles.!!!!!!!! :smileyrai

Mine are still original skoda vintage from when new, 39k odd miles ago. The fronts have bucketloads of material. This is after around 55 laps of the ring. The rears look like they will need changing soon.

Maybe mine are all original too then Manny.

Aside: for those considering a change to better performing pads, can anyone confirm whether the Octavia shares any brake parts with a MkIV Golf 1.8T?

37k on originals and they look virtually brand new - hardly any wear at all - the discs are in nice condition too!

Nick - if you DIY can you take some pics?

can anyone confirm whether the Octavia shares any brake parts with a MkIV Golf 1.8T?

Without looking at any tech info, the calipers, disks etc on my Octy vRS look identical to those on my girlfriend's Golf PD130 - except of course my calipers are green ! Hers is a company car, I can foresee some parts swapping coming on in the future ! ;)

What's the expected life of other components, shock absorbers for example ?

I've just clocked up 46k miles and there's plenty of meat left on my original pads. Not bad considering stopping a tonne of boat on a trailer with wet drum brakes is going to give the car's brakes some grief.

I had a ZX that went though 2 sets of front discs and pads in 42k miles, so as already mentioned it's down to the way you drive and the quality of the parts fitted.

 A while back while waiting for my Primera GT to be serviced a irritated chap came in clutching a lucas box and two fairly badly worn discs.

His gripe, well had been serviced at some point in the past by this garage...the car used soly by his son had then got the pads done and a n other garage said discs were knackered. I think the Nissan garage had seen the car for a service with these discs on but not fitted them...basically the funny bit...

Look my son does not race or trash this car, he does mainly motorway commuting down south (hence not present :really: ) miles where you hardly need to use the brakes...

..I looked at service manager, paused and actually laughed out loud... so asked him if he thought brakes did more work at 80 and stopping or at 25 and stopping...

...the really funny bit, he wanted the nissan garage to pay for the discs change, compensate his time + son and settle a n other garages bill. It was at this point I left...wondering if I should ask the butty can for a refund because the sandwich they sold me has been consumed through normal usage... :really:

Anyway sorry off topic...

I'm thinking of taking my tyres back for a refund - after a mere 34000 miles they have had the audacity to wear out - and, I would point out, I mainly drive on motorways, so there's no excuse !!! :irked:

my Primera GT

Another one! Nearly as common as 'Scooby -> 'Tavia path!

My GT was a bit bland on the inside, and not stupid-fast (no slouch, though) but the only reason I sold it was that it was 5+ years old. What did you think of yours?

Are you going to buy some proper tyres this time Nick , or are you sticking with the solid rubber ones ;)

For a normally aspirated it was nice 150BHP :bullwhip:, from a Xantia TDI Estate with compact mod  . I did not modifiy it as such as it was under a finance agreement (Never again shall I walk that road :davosmili :bullwhip: :gay: :mischievo  :finger::doh: )

What it lacked in punch it made up for in handling. Again not perfect but more than capable...eventually got fed up of the boot. I was sad to see it go, and if I knew then what I do now, I would still have it, albeit with a few more dents I suspect.

I posted on EVO for a new ride as I was struggling to find somthing that did not cost the earth and rewarded me. I was looking, nay I had banked my hopes on a galant 2.5v6 sport, took a 2.0sport out and nearly went straight on a roundabout :1: , er thanks, I hope the vr4 handles better, was shown the door.

Then a little chap by the name of Ian mentioned Skoda, approx 2hours after I pickedup a flyer announcing new local garage opening...tres bizarre non?

The rest as they say is historie. :mischievo

Opps I went off topic, apologies and plenty of :001_007:
