Review - Neuspeed 6 Speed Gearbox Short Shifter

Featured Replies

The Neuspeed Short Shifter is marketed for the VW A5 platform cars in the US however some of these share similar components which fortunately means that we get the benefit of this masterpiece in engineering.

Opening the box reveals a very well made part machined from a solid billet of material.

Fitting is a doddle and takes around 10 minutes and the included instructions are excellent.

Only tools required are a 13mm socket and a small flat screwdriver and a dash of grease or Vaseline. (Additionally - tools to remove Airbox on non vRS models)

Neuspeed quote a reduction in throw of around 40% which in this case seems to be about the most you would want.

Currently listed at $230 which works out at around

Can confirm that this is one helluva nice mod. Changing gear is almost as smooth as when using the OEM but with the delight of a much shorter throw.

Get one, you won't be dissapointed!.

I really hate you sometimes :D :P spend spend spend .

Is it just the cable end that is a different size on the 56 plate cars?

Yes it is Ross, only slightly though. The only reason I can see for this is perhaps to allow for a larger rubber insert and better damping. I assume you could get the cable end from an earlier car if necesary but I would hope that Neuspeed will supply both sizes in the future.

It's not clear in the picture but the spiggot on the Neuspeed is threaded into the shifter so can easily be removed.

I was thinking you could get just the end and replace the old one.

Seconded 100%, took me around 10 minutes to fit as Stu mentioned from the fitting time and the quality is excellent, it's almost a shame to have it hidden in the engine bay.

I'll have to have a try of yours Steve next week.

B4stards, the lot of you

:D :D :D

That sounds really great but I don't think my mechanical skills are up to fitting it!!! Does it affect warranty? Would it be okay on an 05 plate 2.0FSI ?

Check the part number of your existing shifter and see if this matches one of those I posted above.

Look at the picture above and you will see the number is stamped down the left hand side. On the car this would be on the left of the shifter as you look in the engine bay, near the engine block. It might be harder for you as I think it might be under your airbox. Is yours a 6 speed?

You really can't go wrong with the fitting, it is keyed so it will only fit one way.

Ok then utilising your vast amount of experience, oh and of course good English and correct punctuation, you tell him!!

Is yours a 6 speed?

Yes, and it isn't bad, but improvement always welcome!

I'll check the number out today and see if I feel brave enough to tackle it. Thanks.

If you get one and are worried drop by and I'll put it on for you.

Sounds great Stu!

Much better than my experiences with the diesel geek short shifter on the Fabia vRS - totally mis-matched. And you don't find out until you've finished 90% of the work too!!

Cheers Mate

Bas

that looks like nice piece of kit!!! does it really make much difference??

Very much so mate. :D

i've tried short shifters on 085 boxes before and i never got on that well with them and i allways ended up putting the original one back on....

the best thing about the nuespeed one is that it is shiny!

That's very kind! Do you mail order them in from the USA or what? My missus is going to see our daughter in Florida in October. I suppose I could get one mailed to her, and have 'er indoors bring it back?

These came from the US via a friendly Briskodian yes.

I can PM you the details.

They are available via Awesome in the UK.

I would perhaps think of a group buy on this as I know of at least three others intersted in getting one.

PM sent ....

1K0 711 051 J was fitted to the 55 plate and fitted straight in. This part is now deleted.

1K0 711 051 N was fitted to the 56 plate car which had a different sized spiggot, smaller by approximately 1.5mm. This was easily rectified with the help of a friendly Briskodian and his trusty lathe :P . I have emailed Neuspeed to advise them but as yet no reply.

Hi,

What do you make of this? The numbers on my shifter are like this:

Two lines of numbers

ZS8 1KO711046D

1KO711051D

Good
