The advice on Polished Bliss (http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/guides_wheels.html) recommends you to remove the wheels from your car every few months to thoroughly clean and treat them from all the brake dust and grime that may have collected.

I have been careful to clean the front of the wheels on my new Ocatvia vRS each time I wash the car but as yet have not removed them to clean inside and round the back of each wheel although I know there is a fair amount of dirt there.

How many of you actually remove your wheels for this purpose and how often do you do this? Do you use axle stands to keep the car off the ground while cleaning all four wheels or do you clean and replace one wheel at a time? Any tips would be appreciated.

I will normally clean the inside of the rim when I remove the wheel to check the discs and pads etc. As my current car is in warranty, I probably won't bother.

I normally clean them from the outside each week when i wash the car and once every so often use a cleaning agent on the oustide to get rid of any brake dust deposits and when i do that I also use muc off from either halfrauds or my local bike shop, spray through the spokes leave for a few seconds then spray the hose pipe through and there you go, all done.

Don't be silly, how about an option for what's cleaning the car?

I find this car very odd in cleaning respects - it hardly ever seems to need anything except warm water and a sponge, chamois or wheel brush. On others I used Wonder Wheels every month or so, but on this one I seem to get as good results with plain water. Do they have some kind of special finish now?

So far as taking wheels off to clean them? No way - drag out the trolley jack, get the torque wrench and coded socket out, puff - pant, lug the wheel off - wheeze, grunt - on to the next corner. At nearly 62, life has other demands!!!

I have always removed the wheels from my cars when I first get them to clean them properly and apply wheel sealant. Once I do this they only need a quick wash. When I got my last vRS I was suprised how dirty the wheels were after just 300 miles.

I must admit though, I have a Snap-On rechargable wheel wrench, so it makes it a lot easier.

Life's too flippin' short!!

It's a good idea to remove the wheels every few months anyway, to prevent the alloy from sticking to the steel hub (copper grease as a barrier works well). You also get the chance to check the tyres thoroughly for damage, and ensure all the balance weights are still there.

Skodaw, that cleaned up really nicely. What did you use ?

SWMBO would go mad if i started taking the wheels off to clean it. Already spent £40 on Meguairs (which she does not understand - suprise)

i only ever clean the inside of my wheels when they have to come off for checking the brakes.

I've been using Copperslip since before I was born.

The Copaslip I use is stuff that was left over from my first car, an Alfasud, circa 1980.

Now I've done that, a quick wash every week and they'll be good for 6 months. Its no hardship whipping them off twice a year to give them a good wash, seal and wax.

Its also worthwhile using a specific wheel wax as this is designed to withstand higher temps. I also use it under the engine bay too...

I never use wonder wheels etc... they are very corrosive and should only be used very occassionally to remove the most stubborn grime.

been using Copperslip since before I was born.

born slippy eh??:D

I new a chap once who took the wheels off his Mondeo Ghia and cleaned them in the bath. He also cleaned wheel trims in the dishwasher.

Not entirely sure what his SWMBO thought.

I remember using some, or something very like it, on my BSA Gold Star, so that has to be something like 1963/4 ?

Lasted longer than the Alfa :D

I remove the wheel trims if that counts?

You'll be saying next you occasionally drive through a deep puddle to clean them.

I dont even have time to wash the car enough, sod the inside of the wheels, I guess when I can afford a car that would warrant this kind of treatment I will employ a man to do just that, tally ho!

I clean the inside of the wheels with the same stuff I use on the outer part.

However, I don't take the wheel off to clean it, the Pegasus wheels make it quite easy to get your hand inside to clean them.

You have to be careful of the brake shield that cuts your hand to shreds :(

My car gets cleaned every week and the inner part of the wheels get done every 4th week.

I'd feel like a plank taking my wheels off just to clean them TBH.

Pcturing car on bricks whilst cleaning wheels.

I could also imagine putting the wheels back on in different places. I already have a problem with the steering wheel not being square on.

I have got a 'special' brush for getting inside the alloy, and as you pointed out its fairly easy to get behind the spokes for Pegasus's's's. <<< i do have 4 after all

Does anyone have one of the high pressure washers like Karscher? [?spelling?].

I wondered what that was like on alloys.

Q. Do you take your wheels off to clean them?

1) Yes I live at home with my parents.

2) Yes I'm single.

3) No, I'm married.

4) I'm too embarased to do that.

I think that'd arrive at the same conclusion.
