so why did esure pay out in the end? I don't get it. Is it because the owner did not want the car back as he felt he could not drive it again after it had been nicked and damaged?

Yes. The car was missing for 2 weeks so I think the payout had been arranged before the car was found, or at least the wheels were in motion.

I have had the boot carpets out and can see no signs of repair on the boot floor, the n/s/r wing is immaculate on the inside, the o/s/r wing has a couple of signs of panel beating, but nothing major and has been done top notch.

Not the same level of damage as the previous owner discribed, but maybe it looks worse when it is your car at the time?!

Just as a heads up for buying from a Dealer. All the Dealers I worked for and know of, HPI their cars before taking them in. Especially GTi types of cars. In my experience, no main, franchised dealer would ever take an HPI write-off car into stock, ever.
