 How can you want to get it cut. Well, I suppose there s always someone out there with no taste. :thumbdwn:

For the last few years people have wanted top gear axed due to their need for speed etc... encouraging people to do this on the roads..

I think they should dedicate a program presented mainly by hammond about his crash showing how no matter how many safety tests can be done... speed is dangerous and can result in a smash even in extremly controlled conditions... therefore don't do it on the road....

That is actually a good idea.

these online petitons are a waste of thime. there are probably 10 on the go already about this. It's not even been cancelled yet, and the BBC will never see it.

I've seen different ones on different forums over different things.

Theres more to life than a tv show about cars. If it does get cancelled, oh well. If not, good. It was cancelled before.

If you take the program for what it is...three bumbling fools keeping people amused (the marx brothers did a much better job) then I suppose OK leave it on, but to call it a motoring program is stretching the imagination too far.

and don't forget they hate Skodas

I do get them once in a while!

As Hammond improves, BBC says show will go on

by Sally Hillier

As presenter Richard Hammond continues to recover after his near fatal car crash, senior tv executives, including BBC Two controller Roly Keating, are this week working out how and when to bring back Top Gear.

The programme was due to return on October 8, but has been postponed after consultation with the Top Gear team, headed by executive producer Andy Wilman.

The BBC says ‘the priority for now must be ensuring Richard makes a full recovery’ and that nothing will be finalised for the new series without talking to everyone involved. ‘When it is suitable, the team will do this and announce a new transmission date.’

The news will please Jeremy Clarkson, who in a characteristically spirited piece in the Sunday Times, feared that the programme, criticised by some for its celebration of speed and derring-do, might be axed.

‘Even though the crash failed to kill Hammond, the forces are massing to destroy the show that made his name,’ he claimed. He believed that what had happened to his fellow presenter and close friend, whom he jokily described as ‘an irritating little mutant’, was simply an accident and that nobody was to blame.

The crash is the subject of inquiries by both the police and the health and safety executive. There is also a BBC inquiry led by Keith Scholey, controller, factual production; his team includes Stephen Gregory, head of occupational risk, programme production, and Jon Ling, principal risk manager, health and safety. It is unlikely that the internal findings will be published until after the police and HSE investigations are complete, and these could take several weeks.

Meanwhile Hammond is making good progress in a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary, where he is being treated for the serious head injury he sustained when the jet car he was driving at around 300mph at Elvington air field in Yorkshire, went out of control.

He has been chatting to friends and family, and has been out of bed and walking, although doctors have warned that there is still a long way to go in his recovery. Mark Thompson was among his visitors over the weekend.

Clarkson says it was Hammond’s own idea to drive the jet car as ‘he wanted to know what it would be like to go really fast’.

As a result of what happened, there is now a question mark over Dangerous Britain, another BBC programme Hammond has been signed to present, although it is still in its early stages and filming has yet to start.

This is what Mark Thompson told Ariel after visiting Richard Hammond at the weekend

‘Richard and his family told me that they’d been overwhelmed by the response both from his colleagues and from the public. It’s still early days for Richard but he is an astonishingly resilient human being and I hope he will make a complete recovery and be able to resume his career soon.

Last Friday at Leeds General Infirmary I saw Andy Wilman and a few other members of the Top Gear and the wider BBC press and management teams who had been dealing with the aftermath of the accident round the clock for 48 hours. To a man and woman they looked dog-tired, but also delighted and relieved that Richard was doing so well. I felt and still feel incredibly grateful for them for the way they handled themselves and supported each other last week.’

• The BBC spent part of the summer filming Yorkshire Air Ambulance for an Inside Out (Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) special broadcast on Monday evening.

The film, made by Ian Cundall, Spencer Stokes and Nicola Rees, featured the work of paramedics Darren Axe and Peter Vallance. It was this team that was called to Elvington air field after Richard Hammond’s crash, although the cameras were not following the air ambulance that day. The paramedics later told the BBC that, although they were both car enthusiasts and fans of Top Gear, they did not immediately recognise the presenter as they were ‘too fixated’ on caring for their badly injured patient.

  • 1 month later...

James May has just been on
