Great car mate!

Wow!

looking good

sex on wheels! :)

Very nice car that. One of my all time favourite engines. SWMBOs brother had an ascona with a tuned Carlton 2.2L lump and Manta 400 rear axle setup. It was a hoot in the wet!

Before I had my octavia vrs I had 2 capris. I wish back then I got a manta instead.

What bhp was your capri pushing out? Ive seen that Manta a few times in the mag with the water injection.

The genuine 400 road car had around 150bhp it was the normal manta block but with a twin cam cosworth developed head. The Group b rally car had around 280bhp. I believe my engine should be around 230bhp. However it needs a good overhaul.

Check this 400 engine.

eBay: ++OPEL ASCONA 400 MANTA 400 MOTOR 2,4-16V 259PS 270Nm++ (Artikel 120068280984 endet 04.01.07 12:10:39 MEZ)

The car is believed to do around at least 160mph, bearing in mind it is at least 400 kg less than a carlton gsi 3000.

The biggest downside is the weight of the engine as the block itself is cast iron, 3 of the cylinders are over the fron axle which doesnt help going into corners. Ive never drove the car fast so I dont know what its limits are yet. Suspension has been uprated to spax shocks and 400lbs springs up front, I think I will go for the 700lbs which I believe are the same spec as the manta 400 rally tarmac setup.

I was building the Capri (originally a 2 litre laser, but had the turbo strapped to it and two wrecked pistons when I bought it) for about 200 bhp. It was on a carb (think it was a Weber downdraft from the early Delta turbos), and I had the engine bored to take 2.9 Granada pistons - they were pocketed and gave the engine about 6.5:1 compression - it had lots of potential to take boost but also gained 17mpg economy - oops! I had it running about 6-7 psi, and was intending to get it set up properly, I think it did about 130bhp in this spec. It had loads of torque (I had to change to the 205's off the 2.8 since the 185's had a tendency to, er, light up!) - but I sold it to a friend, he got it set up properly, and replaced the carburrettor (prob half the reason it didn't really like going above 5000 revs) - don't know the power but I had a go round Stoneligh at a Capri event, did the unofficial 0-60 against my wris****ch and managed 7 seconds - on 4 psi!

Unfortunately the car was crushed by the council during a tax misunderstanding while the owner was on holiday - sad loss of a rather unique Capri.

I had half a dozen Capris, including this one, two of these were four pots, the other three 2.8i's, the last being a Turbo technics converted one - it flew and did manage the 6.5 seconds/143mph performance they were quoted as!

2.4 lump looks good, I guess the other alternative is the XE 16V, which is probably capable of similar, in fact there are quite a few Coswroth headed or derived 16V's capable of this sort of power and more - I did crew for a Darrian that had a Cosworth derived engine, think it was a 2.4/2.5 - had about 330hp and absolutely, unsurprisingly! flew!

Very nice looking car. Mantas are cool. Speaking of which, if anyone can point me in the direction of pictures of a really nuts Manta I'd appreciate it. Its bright orange/red, with big wheels, and the best bit is that it seems to have a tubular front sections, as the top of the suspension struts actually show through the bonnet... if someone can find me a link with piccys I'll be a happy bunny!

YouTube - Manta Magic

Warning... Seriously pornographic...

Very nice - a well put together video too. Good choice of music

He just couldn't decide which set of alloys he liked best though :D

Steve

Odd that it has a volvo engine??

Day Tripper, have you posted this up on a certain Vauxhall Forum?

Thanks for the comments.

I am proud sometimes, but once you completed one job theres always another. I regret buying this manta as so many things were wrong with it. Ive spent that much money on the car I cant sell it because I would get nowhere near what I paid for it.

You just have to plough on with it.

Jim this manta you talking about is it red? I think ive seen it on ebay, sure its not a circuit car as the jag block wouldnt do it any favours on a rally.

Hi John not spoke to you in a long time, havent been to a meet for about a year and a half. I have two cars my normal one is a suzuki ignis sport (lpg) and this is my bitch.

I cant wait to take it for a drive out. Hopefully it will be ready in the spring.

Still needs new wiring loom fitted, split rims rebuild, timing chain, clutch kit, axel and no doubt Ill find something else that needs doing. Oh and it definately needs a sump guard. I have to go at 5mph over speed bumps because of the engine and anti roll bar is so low.

The worst thing about this car is because its had an engine conversion, there are no standard parts for it, it has to be custom.

OMG, You Tube overdose...

I was offline for about 9 months so I missed out on the youtube craze. When I got back online I was blown away by some of the cool stuff on their very addictive.

No mate, it was white, it was definatly a Jag engine as it broke down in front of me and opened the bonnet.

I think you'll find the Jag engined special in question is, in actual fact a rally car. It was featured in PPC a few months back (friend is looking for the issue), and he rallies in a class with special dispensation - pretty much means he's rallying for the fun of it (doesn't fit the regular classes). But what fun I bet he has!!

Brings back many happy memories of my Manta, which I found the photogs of last week.

GTE Coupe Exclusive with full Blitz interior, Bill Blydenstein conversion. Pretty slow compared to the Skud but it was still great fun and still meet my mates from the OMOC for a drink now and then.

I love the Bertie Fisher decals, Manta Magic comes to mind and the Circuit of Ireland 85". I had a friend who did one of the first GSI 3.0 conversions back in 1992. It was a Coupe sprayed the same Metalic Green as the Rover 220 Coupes and it was QUICK. Wiring loom was fun to hook up as I recollect!

I hope we see it at a meet someday, it's a credit to you:thumbup:

Blitz interior eh. Sweet. There on german ebay from time to time but im planning on sparco bucket seats with harnesses once ive got the faults sorted.

Did you say you knew Pat or Mick Maher?

Manta magic exactly! Theres where I got the idea from. Not sure if I mentioned earlier in the thread. Someone fitted a bmw e28 dash into my manta many years ago and butchered up the wiring loom.

Ive installed the manta dash but havent touched the loom. Im taking it down to a friend in the omoc to strip out the damaged loom and carlton engine loom to replace it with a fresh manta loom with a fresh carlton loom, but we intend to strip as many unescessary wires as possible.

What axle or clutch did your friend use if you remember?

Im struggling to think of what axle to use. Im thinking of a rebuild 1.8 manta axle (shorter gear ratios) with LSD fitted, Im not sure if it can handle the torque though.

The diff is knackered and so is the clutch with release bearing, think im going to have to use a carlton 2.2 clutch.

When its all done ill bring it on track days and runs, hopefully it will be ready by April. Its been a money pit thats for sure but when youve gone this far you cant go back as ill never get the money back that has been spent on it.

Circuit of ireland 85 is on this link, and 84 is on page 1
