Fabia Estate 3rd rear headrest mod ?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if a 3rd rear headrest was an option on the Fabia Estate ?

The reason I'm asking is that I've just added a 3rd rear headrest to my Golf which simply involved locating plastic inserts through the seat cloths into the holes (already there) in the back seat frame and then inserting the headrest.

It looks really good & I'd like to do the same to SWMBO's Fabia Estate assuming:

a) That the locating holes for the headrest inserts are built into the Fabia Estate seat back ?

B) That the headrest inserts are available to buy from the dealers ?

SWMBO's car is a 2002 1.9 Tdi Elegance Estate any information or help about this prospective modification would be gratefully received.

Cheers !

I think 3rd rear headrest is an option on the Fabias and I would imagine you can get the bits from the dealer

Doesnt give part numbers though, sorry.

Headrest is £45 and I would think the inserts are the same as the others.

Cheers Dude !

I'll give the dealers a phone & see if the inserts are available & maybe try and source a spare headrest somewhere.

ooooo this looks like a mod i'd like to doo too! doubt the seatbelts would be able to be relocated like the latest fabia in the center would they?

this would be a good mod for my vrs too, more info please, are the mounting holes already in place?

I really need this mod but need a three point seatbelt, the baby seat takes up space one leaving 3 point belt free (not safe when squeezing in two passengers.

I'm going to look at buying the 3/4 backrest which incorporates the 3 point belt and headrest.

Let's hold our breaths and wait for the price, unless anyone has priced this up already?

I haven't had time to phone the stealers yet, been too busy working but THIS seems to suggest that the inserts are indeed available (for my model at least) and the holes already in the seat back.:D

I don't think I'll have time to phone the stealers in the immediate future so I'll probably just order up a set of inserts next time I'm there then I can then fit them & start looking around for a headrest at my leisure probably from a scrapper as I reckon that'll be the expensive part !

I've just found this thread last night while i was on ngihts at work.

I nipped to the local dealer today and it would seem from the info he gave me that to do this would cost around

Main headrest frame. (approx £50)

Foam padding. (approx £10)

Cover. (approx £10)

1xNormal receptical. (approx £2)

1xAdjustable receptical. (approx £3)

These parts are ordered separately and you then have to make up the headrest.

Well, I'm making progress on this .... although slowly !

I have a Golf Tdi (Fabia is SWMBO's) and I tried one of the Golf headrests in the Fabia rear seat back and it fits !

So I just bought a Golf headrest (very cheap) on Ebay & although the material is the wrong colour it is otherwise identical to the Fabia ones .

From the information supplied by WaveyDavey above I'll now have to get a replacement headrest cover & the locating inserts ordered up from the stealers (probably next weekend) & fingers crossed I should soon after that have a 3rd rear headrest installed in the Fabia. :)

keep us posted

I nipped to the local dealer today and it would seem from the info he gave me that to do this would cost around £70-80.

Plus VAT !

Hmm.. anyone thinking of retro-fitting a third headrest from new parts could find it to be quite expensive !

I ordered the parts I needed which are only 1xNormal mounting & 1xAdjustable mounting together with a new headrest cover and after VAT etc the total amount came to £22.41.

Keep in mind that I already have the headrest although my centre is the same as the rear left & right headrests (yes I know it won't help the rear view) principally because I got one very cheap on ebay that just needs the correct trim material. It's costing me circa £30 doing this mod on the cheap so I can imagine that to buy all the correct new parts from the stealers to do this including the headrest frame, foam etc which I don't have to won't be cheap at all !!

Anyway, things are at least slowly progressing here.

Well the third headrest mod is finally completed.:)

Picture HERE the mark on the seat back just below the centre headrest is an indentation from the baby seat that I removed to take the photo.

In my case the cost was under £30. :D

If anyone is interested i have an Octy1 middle rear headrest which was left behind by accident when my son sold his car - it's a sort of charcoal colour.

Looking good but i think i prefer the proper centre headrest. It gives better visibility out the back as it is only about half the height of the one you have used. As you can see from this pic.......

I'm still looking at this mod and still find it hard to believe that you have to buy all the parts seperate and not as a completed headrest. I'm gonna ring round a few more dealers to confirm before i commit to fitting one.

I totally agree with you on that BUT I'm just not prepared to pay circa £85 for a half size head rest and inserts from the stealers. Maybe if I saw one in a scrapyard at the right price I would consider buying it as it would now be a simple job to swap over with the inserts in place otherwise I'm happy.:)

I have to say although I agree the rear view looks quite restricted in the picture link I posted, I did 60 miles today on a mixture of dual carriageway and country roads and really I didn't find the rear view a particular problem. I was able to see the traffic behind me & it's certainly no worse than the rear view from my Golf.

Anyway, we now know at least the mod can be done in whatever guise. :D

Good luck with yours !

I wasn't havin' a go...... Hope it didn't read like i was.... :) I must be honest If it's a case of having to buy the bits seperate i won't be going for it. It's just too much hassle for me. If it's a case of paying £80 odd quid for one and it's all ready to fit then i think it'll be one of those things to do if i get 4 numbers on the lotto ;) The idea of getting one from a scrapper seams ok..... But....... I'm that finicky i doubt i'd find a good / clean enough one from the scrap yard...... (Mine having to be one of the light grey vRS ones).

The thing what's winding me up the most is i originally intended on having it fitted from new but the lure of having the car in 4 weeks rather than the original 10 weeks, (my car was someone else's cancelled order with all my options except the headrest), was just too much.........

Cheers

Dave.

No, I didn't read it that way at all & having re-covered a headrest it gave me a good chance to look at how they are assembled.

If you have to "build your own" headrest (I assume the half size is the same) I wouldn't be put off by that process. Basically you have three parts, the frame, the preformed foam shaped part and the cover. The frame comes ready built, the preformed foam part simply fits over that & the hardest part is getting the outside cover over the preformed foam. It's not that hard really it's just a tight fit.:D

Do you have to stitch the cover in place or anything or is it elasticated in some way???

Nope, it's sort of elasticated and clips together along the bottom seam, no stitching required.

If you feel along the top of the rear seat in the middle where the headrest would be you'll notice the holes are there under the seat cover..... You just cut the seat cover then put the headrest inserts into the holes then the headrest fits into the inserts like the normal ones.

I'm still trying to locate a used centre headrest at present....... What was an initial

Thanks for that but this might be a silly question but what stops the inserts from coming back out the holes when you try to raise the headrest:confused:
