To save me having to remove the existing battery does anyone know what spec I require when buying a replacement?

it depends on which options you have fitted,

if you have a look at the options codes on the car indentification sticker under the carpet in the boot, or in the first page of the service book it will have the codes

J0L = 340A(70aH)

J0R = 380A(80aH)

J1L = 280A(60aH)

J1P = 220A(44aH)

J1U = 450A(95aH)

Thanks. My option code is J1L, I think I'd like to go for something beefier given I've added sat nav, heated seats, phatbox and VW illumination over standard. Can anyone give any reason why I shouldn't?

Ive always upgraded my batteries and never even thought of that as an issue.

My Octy 4x4 has had an optima red top for the last year and Ive never had a problem. If anything it seems to be better ie headlight output doesnt change when high draw kit is switched on. Also can sit for four + weeks and start first time every time

So the alternators are all different for the above battery specs?

yeah the alternators come in different amp ratings as well rangine from about 60A to about 150A iirc

although as has already been mentioned above, it is ok to use a bigger rated battery but it will just charge more slowly, but dont use a bettery which is a lower capacity becuase it may lead to overheating and ameltdown

there is 3 different ones listed as 120A versions, two made by valeo and one made by hitachi

I ended up getting a new battery from Halfords. I used the guide in the shop to select the right one for my car. The new battery is smaller and lighter than the old one, but appears to be a higher rating. The battery is a calcium type and is guaranteed for 4yrs.

The battery type is uk no 065 battery or for Varta who supply VAG cars now the number is 555 155 054 which is a calcium 4 year warranty battery sells for about under £60, there are cheaper bats ie h/fords but are no way near as good
