mini fans discuss 5th gear: mini vs vRS.

Featured Replies

Makes for some interesting reading......

It'd be nice to test a "properly modded" Fab vRS against a "properly modded" mini S - not just on track performance but real world comfort, insurance, initial and running costs, etc.

Anyone got any connections with 5th gear?

check it out:

5th Gear. MINI Cooper vs. Skoda Fabia vRS - MINI2

Cheers

Bas

PS they missed an obvious plus on the Fabia vRS - being able to soot anyone who annoys you....

Ahh well, Mini owners, at least they're well balanced - they've got a chip on both shoulders! ;)

BMW 1/2 Series? I'll leave it thanks.

Steve

i just figured it out! the reson all mini2 drivers are so grumpy. it hit me when i was trying to steal a mates mini2. the reson is you have to be under 5'5" to drive one of the dam things. that means that all mini2 owners have short man syndome.

Before we start jumping on the mini owners....

.....they are doing a good enough job for themselves!

I've got a Skoda because I find it cheap to run, cheap to buy, cheap to insure (even with many points) and fun to drive.

It's a nice looking car, not pass me a tissue fantastic, but nice.

It's subtle, a decent all round package and for me as a person, I stand out from the crowd - I don't need a retro chic clone car to do that for me.

If I wanted amazing performance then I'll be saving for a bigger more expensive car that costs a bomb to run, insure and maintain - and that wouldn't be a MCS, Fabia or any other 'hot hatch'.

Porsche or TVR + loads of fun =

:iagree:

my fabia costs me on average £600 per month to run, sometimes £50 less, sometimes £150 more...

I've got a Fabia Vrs, and someone in my family a Mini Cooper. I can honestly say that apart from the kind of novelty factor (which soon wears off) and the TLC plan, it is the Vrs for me everytime. It's rarer, bigger, better built, faster and a heck of a lot more economical, not to mention cheaper. I think that residuals must be fairly comparable too?

I have no idea how much MINIs and Fab VRS's cost - can someone give me a price for the MINI cooper and Fab VRS ?

If I wa sin the market for sucah a car and diddnt want 4 seats then I'm sorry, but the Mini would get my vote.

Why? Because with a few cosmetic mods (tints, dinky fog lamps etc.)it looks cool and the Fabia doesnt. No matter how you dress it the baby Skud will either look like a shopping car or a ch*v'd up shopping car.... it will NEVER look cool.

Saw a nice mini in autotrader for about

my fabia costs me on average

When I was in the market for a brand new car I looked at both a Cooper and a vRS. I drove the Cooper first and found it a little harsh and thrashy. Brilliant fun around corners but nothing special and at circa.£13000 a tad expensive. Also not being able to get more than three shopping bags in the boot made its appeal a little limited. I then went over to the Skoda dealer and test drove an £11000 red Fabia vRS. As soon as the turbo kicked in I couldn't stop smiling. Threw it around the first corner...not as agile but no less fun. I went straight back into the dealership when I got back from my test drive and put a deposit down there and then. Looking back I still have no regrets about buying a vRS over a Cooper, I've got more money in my pocket now and I can get the shopping from the supermarket and home in one trip!!! Bonus.

The Mini2 is a 2 seater driven by boy estate agents, I drove one once and felt such a w-anchor I couldn't wait to get out of it ... if I wanted a 2 seater I'd get a cheap Smart Roadster (800cc and mega cheap insurance) and then drive around the outside of Mini2 drivers at traffic islands to get my kicks !

The concept of standing out in a MINI makes me laugh. They're common as dirt!

As opposed to standing out in a run of the mill looking Fabia that any "average Joe" wouldnt notice at the side of a bunch of Corsas, Fiestas etc.

I don't know, in some places they seem more common than dirt!!!!

One of the advantages of the Fabia vRS is that it doesn't stand out.

Why draw attention to the fact that you are probably quicker than most of the "hot"-hatches in the real world, especially when they have to keep on stopping for fuel:) . Other advantages are; 4 doors so you can get into the back seats, legroom in the back, decent size boot - complete with spare wheel:rolleyes: and you don't have to raid the options list to finish building the car.

Oh, the irony.......

what a bunch of losers, how many Furby's can you buy for 35K?????

before we start MINI bashing....... has anyone actually sat in a MINI and compared the interior with the Fabia ?

IMHO the MINI just looks nicer and feels like a more "grown up" car than the Fabia (even though there is less space)

There is no doubt the Mini is a good car in it's own right however I personally don't like these, -what I see as- 'novelty' cars (I'd bracket the beetle in with that)

My neigbours had an S that had HUGE mods on it and sat costing them circ. £35-40K.

To each their own. I'd rather have the mini cooper than the Mini2.

I despise these 'my car is better than your car' threads. They do come across so very childish and tbh I didn't expect to come across them on here when the cars here are by enlarge, understated, averagely performing, sensible yet fun cars. I expected it on Scoobynet but it just goes to show the need for some to feel superior to others.

Sad really.

I have - thought the 'silver' plastics used in the door handles and rev counters etc looked and felt like a child's toy. I'd be frightened of it breaking off (though I'm sure they don't).

Yes I've often noticed when I've come up against other hot hatches on the road that they're always stopping for fuel

Chris

Fabia VRs is the range topper....

If you had a Cooper you'd always be explaining why you didn't have the Cooper S, or Works or the one with the terracota wing mirrors.

Somebody I know has a Cooper:- "Yes, well, erm - I didn't like the gearbox in the 'S' so I just got the Cooper".

Erm....
