I Hate Satellite Navigation.............

......when it doesn't work!!!.

I had to use the MFD2 Satnav system for the first time in anger today to get me to Stepney Green in London and it let me down....badly :( . The darn thing kept crashing even though I had a strong GPS signal.

It did redeem itself just before I was about to put my foot through the bloody thing when it popped back into life and got me to my destination right at the last minute!.

I love it me!! Sat Nav got us home from the VW festival when we didn't really where we were let alone how to get home, was also dead handy finding a ho-tel/mo-tel/holiday iiiinn on a recent trip up north...

The only depressing thing is when you get an instruction along the lines of "in 141 miles, turn left"

You're just a technophobe Steve!!

You're just a technophobe Steve!!

I've just blasted half a cup of coffee accross the room reading that :D:rofl:

Sounds familiar. Mine has been fine since the new disk though, touch wood.

My Medion PDA sat nav was always spot on but lately it has been getting slower. And, last time I used it it took me mega out of my way through leeds center, lost the signal under a tunnel and I missed the turn to get me out of leeds.

DOH!!

I think it was set to shortest route instead of quickest so I cant really blame it too much as it is normally a life saver!

should have just asked me. I'd have told you how to get there easy enough :P

I always try to check my route in advance when I use my TomTom, and still have a traditional map in the car :)

I've had it attempt to take me some very strange routes in the past. Nothing's perfect, but I wouldn't be without mine.

I suspect something is wrong with yours, are you using a copied disc?

Is your sensor located/working properly?

A built in nav system like an MFD2 not only uses GPS but wheel speed from the gala cable as well so it should still know roughly where you are if it loses GPS signal.

If it's crashing like you say i'd suspect your using a copied disc. If i'm wrong i'll eat my hat!!:D

I would advise against selecting shortest route after the antics I experienced with TomTom yesterday. I wanted to go from Birmingham to Anglesey along the A5 which takes you through Shrewsbury, then up through the mountains to Betws-y-Coed.

I was happily travelling along the A5 when it tells me to turn left. Fair enough I thought. Then I seemed to be going back on myself along country lanes. Bit strange but carried on. Then it takes me up these one track (literally wide enough for my car) lanes with 1 in 4 gradients, the damn sat nav took me OVER the mountains as it calculated that to be the shortest route.

Of course along these lanes some of which were so unused they had grass growing in the tarmac and acted as water courses for streams flowing down the mountains, with 180 degree hairpins my average speed was about 10mph til I got back on the A5 again

On the journey home I took A55 and M6 back down which was about 30miles longer BUT took an hour less, and that was with some rush hour traffic at the bottom of the M6 to sit in too!

Shortest isnt always quickest.

Makefish, like others I suspect the disc. Take another copy of it using a different brand of CDR media and see how you get on.

My Garmin told me to take a sharp left whilst doing 70 on the A1 m on the way to York.

Went mental at the same point on the return journey.

Been down some pretty tight country 'roads' too

I have the same problem with my KenKen, it likes taking me through single track roads. I tend to select fastest route and yes, maybe it is NSL down these lanes but I sure aint gonna drive that speed.

I wish it had the 'avoid single track country lanes' option. I would select that every time. Apart from that it has changed my driving experiences no end. It stops the arguments in the car which I found out when someone decided we didn't need it in the centre of Stratford even though I was driving

I NEVER use shortest route anymore, since this:

Although I wasnt impressed at the time.

I had Multimap once suggest that I leave the M25 by driving up a grassy bank, through two fences and then over a muddy bridge.

I declined.

Tehehe, I can just imagine the headlines :

Toms Tom Tom goes tits up

:D

A tom tom one did make the headlines for doing just that in ireland.

What's the consensus re. Tom Tom's ?

I fancied one for Xmas, but have read some appaling reviews from disgruntled owners, particluarly on the Amazon website where people have returned them and complained that the brackets are rubbish, they "freeze", they get lost and switch off etc etc.

I am specifically interested in the 310 or 510 model, but am now thinking about sticking with my 2004 AA mapbook.

I had the 700 - excellent and flawless unit, as long as you didnt select "shortest" route. :)

Bah humbug! What's wrong with doing things the old fashioned way with a map?:D

I have a new TomTom one, I can't fault it in the respect of problems re freezing etc. It's great, if you miss a turning you just carry on and it recalculates and gets you to take the next available route. I drove to somewhere near Croydon with some work colleagues, this was the first time I'd been anywhere new to me without Mr P and I was totally confident.

We have a Tom Tom & cant fault it, far easier to use than the Std Sat nav in the Superb, It also covers all of Europe which a lot of others dont.

Beware with Garmin, we had one that said it covered Europe but what you actually got was a CD with Europe on & as the memory wasnt big enough before Each journey you had to download the bits of Europe you needed, if you are travelling through several countries its a total pain & may not take all the countries any way

I do at least 30k business miles a year (as in going to places I don't know) and use a PDA with TT5 on it - it is excellent and I don't even print maps anymore. Borrow and use one before slagging it off - I don't know anyone who regularly uses sat-nav who deoesn't rate it highly. Just don't expect it to replace or be better than local knowledge.

Cheers, may plump for the tom tom one, did fancy the 310 or 510 as it does blutooth with your phone and acts as a handsfree, but apparently that is a bit patchy.

I have a Sony Erricsson K800i - anyone any experience ?

Also, what number of "G's" will the bracket take before it shears off, I am getting new MkII VRS a week today !!! :orb_devil
