60,000 mile service, vRS..

Featured Replies

Well... had my 60k service done at Telfords in Carlisle today, just thought I'd report.

Only thing I asked for when going in was new front wipers, as mine were useless, and to check the brakes, as they were starting to feel a bit wooden when pushed, and I was expecting to have to have new disks and pads, front and back at 66k...

here we go.

Sump plug threads in poor condition, may need heli-coiled at next service

(does anyone know If this should be done under warrenty? surely you could reasonably expect to change the oil 6 times without the plug/sump threads dying?)

replaced worn front brake disks and pads

(they phone to ask me if I wanted to do it, as the inner side of the pads were nearly gone [i expected this] , so I said go ahead [£125])

rear disks and pads will last to next service (70k on one set of rear disks, cool!)

clean out fuel system using tec 2000 cleaning additive

replace wiper blades (what a difference! bloody hell!)

Requires EGR valve (warranty repair) to be done a week on monday.

prices:

labour :

service £100

disks and pads £25

parts: (I'll only list the out of the ordinary stuff....)

two brake disks £55.84

pads £28.93

wipers £18.69

all done quickly and efficiently, courtesy car provided. They washed mine too :)

all in £330.42 (ouch! skint now :( not going out for a while... two new tyres on their way ... bugger..)

comments on weather I can get the sump plug done under warranty please! :)

comments from any other vRS owners who have had a 60K done?!

Cheers all....

Sump plug - thats pathetic. They are the only ones to have used it, they can bloody fix it.

I would have expected them to have identified a cam belt change. Unless this has already been done early?

If the sump plug had been torqued to the correct setting it should last the

life of the car.

You ain't under warranty no more Sharky :(

Unlimited mileage 2 year warranty :P

Nope, the handbook says 100k, but realistically I think 80k is advised now. Remember the car is less than 2yrs old. :)

Ah!

what is tec 2000 cleaning additive ?

i thought the cambelt is due every 40k , or is that only the Ford Galaxy with the PD engine in it ?

whats wrong with the EGR valve ?

if the threads are dodgy in the sump i would say its been over tightened on a number of occasions and if the dealers are the only ones who have drained the oil , i'd say its down to them to get it repaired

also iirc the sump plug should be replaced on every service , the new plug comes with a washer attached which is crushed when tightened

to answer points, yes only skoda dealers have serviced it , though Telfords have only done it once before this.. (one exception, one service at JBS), I'll make sure they fix the sump plug problem for free :)

they say cam belt is 80k now.... (I checked this, and it is correct for my car's build date..)

TaviaRS: as Tom says, unlimited miles for two years :)

ric04vrs: dunno what the addative is, I assume it's normal practice...

and yeah, they get the new washer every time to seal it...

The EGR valve is apparantly leaking oil? hhmmm, i panicked for a minute, till the service guy said the part is ordered by your engine code, so I don't need to worry about the dreaded stutter! lol..

don't think it's too bad for 60k of varied use...... :o

all in

You think that's expensive, wait til the cambelt service!

Chris

doing my best to plan the change to the "special edition" just before 80k :)

Although that is in direct conflict with Skoda's advice on the PD engine!!!

Chris

They always use it at my services

Yeah, I added

Yeah, I added

Yep - cambelt, water pump, aux belt and tensioners.

Steve

I just did my cambelt at 58k miles - but I have a feeling there will be another go at this as 1) it sounds like something is squeeling a little when cold (i.e. wondering what else has bearings in that area) and 2) There IS a metal pump for the engine after all which I want to have fitted, I've seen a broken plastic impeller and I don't want that to kill my engine :)

clean out fuel system using tec 2000 cleaning additive....
Biodiesel would do the same job cheaper, I'd bet.

Not had it done yet, just collecting quotes:

My dealer quoted

Annoyingly having just had the cambelt done + tensioners etc, I will be getting the waterpump changed to a metal one as soon as it's in. My cambelt was changed at 58k, which is early, but I don't care as the cost of the belt is hardly noticable when you take into account the labour of getting to the blasted waterpump :(

I wonder whether my engine being a "04 pd130" will come under the 80k miles cambelt change as well? I have a feeling I'll get it done at 60k anyway, to be sure. Especially if my power goes up a little bit more still next year.

Now having both a Golf PD130 and Fabia PD100 (both remapped) I frequent VW forums as well as this one and I regularly see a lot of confusion over when the cambelt should be changed on PD engines. I'm still not completelty clear as to when they should be changed as I have read elsewhere of people contacting VAG about the suggested 80,000 figure that is often banded about and being told that this was a misprint in handbooks and is actually the kilometer figure which was not changed correctly for the UK (miles) market.

Anyway, I know that the manufactures recommendation is definitely now that the belt is changed when it reaches 4 years old regardless of the mileage and certainly so far as my vehicles are concerned they are changed at 60,000 miles or 4 years whatever comes first. :D

Running a belt to 80,000 miles will in most cases likely cause no problems but I'll not take the chance on any VAG diesel I own as I've seen several examples of what a broken cambelt can do to an engine and it's just not worth it !!

I'd change yours + get that metal impeller pump at the same time, you seriously don't want a plastic impeller falling into your engine & killing all that time/money spent (IMHO of course :))

as i mentioned in an earlier post , the 2000 on Ford Galaxy diesel with the VW PD engine in it, the timing belt is now changed at 40k

When it was originally released in 2000 it was a 40k change then went up to 60k , now back to 40k and changed with the tensioner

i've never changed a water pump on a Galaxy , never even seen one go either , i see the point of changing it but it does make the job more expensive

i'm lucky in the respect that i will be able to do my own belt change so saving a fortune in labour costs

I've read alot about the water pump ect.... but my car is only 20 months old, and still under warranty, and in my opinion, a water pump should last through the warranty period, I wont pay for it while my car is under warranty.... if it dies and eats the engine they can replace the whole lot under warranty!

I can easily understand why people would want to protect their investment with preventative measures ect, but if skoda tell me 80k is when the cam belt is to be changed then it will be, I'm trusting their service programmes... as for the water pump, I will assume mine will keep working, a failure would deffo be a warranty job to fix.... I can't personally see the logic of otherwise wasting my money (have too little of it! :( )

my circumstances may be different to some people though, If I was to be keeping the car past its warranty period, and on to 100k ++ then I too would probably change the waterpump when the cam belt is done at 80k, with a metal impella version ect ect...

however, lets hope it keeps going! I hope to have its replacement in shiny race blue before next april when the warranty dies....

out of interest, how many peoples cars have had a water pump fail?!? (fabia vRS, or other PD130, ric says he's never had to change one on a galaxy) is it only garages that point out this weakness to sell water pumps? or have there been many failures? I would be interested to know, I've never seen a thread entitled "my water pump failed and ate my engine!"
