Which Games console?

Featured Replies

We are games console virgins but this is set to change on Christmas day :)

I will be buying Mr P one in the next few days but as we both don't know what it is to look for I need advice. He is happy for a PS 2, I think we should go for a Wii thingy. Neither of these choices are based on knowledge, so what factors do we need to take into consideration when choosing the correct console?

Ta :)

PS2 is the cheaper option and has tons of games available. You will be lucky to get a wii this side of christmas in any shops.

Wii on the fact that it has a tremendous amount of people after one. Might be better to wait until jan, although nintendo said there would be plenty of stock here before xmas and that was after it sold out.

if you aren't after anything state of the art , Argos are doin the original x-box and 4 games for 50 quid

I just want him to have the best one for the dosh. Do they differ a lot? That hand held controller is what's pulling me in on the Wii, although already people are being injured  Am I right in thinking the latest ones will have better graphics etc than the older consoles? When did the PS2 come out?

Questions, questions :D

ps2 is 6 years old now I believe.

Graphics arent the be all and end all though.

it depends what your looking for really. If you have a hdtv then maybe the xbox 360 is the way to go, but if he's not really into the games then maybe a wii for all out fun. You might be pushed to get one this side of xmas though. Even though stock is arriving no shop knows when and when it does trun up its gone within minutes.

Ps2 would be ok for the occasional game.

If it was me though I would try to get a wii. If more serious about playing games then I would get the 360.

Try playing the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii when your ill in bed!!! It's not going to happen pix, it's not going to happen.

Xbox 360

The problem with this question is that it's a bit like asking:

"I fancy believing in a God; which religion is best?" :D

It also depends if you want to play online games. The PS2 is free but games aren't brilliant, plus you need to buy an adapter (circa £40). The Xbox games are much better but cost £40 per year.

Personally, I would go for the Xbox 360. The controller on the Wiiiii would put me off.

Wait til March and get a PS3, then you'll be future proof.

XBox360 or wait for the PS3

If you look you can use controller style controllers and also gamecube controllers for gamecube games on the wii.

I forget exactly where i saw it.

There is a standard wired controller for the Wii... I think that is aimed more at the games available on the virtual console...

Saying that the Gamecube pads are supported and readily available... my Nintendo Wavebirds plug in to the Wii just fine :)

My Wii is brilliant, having loads of fun playing through Zelda. The controls take a bit of getting used to, but when you have its awesome. Wii Sports is really cool too, particularly the bowling! You use the remote as if you were bowling (remembering not to let go though!) and if you twist your hand during the swing you can hook the ball. The best bit is the training mode where one of the options is a steadily increasing number of pins. It basically adds another row onto the back each time, up to 91/92 pins! I wish you could do that for real, it'd be awesome! I think the Wii will prove to be a much more flexible console than the PS2, but obviously the PS2 has a vast catalogue of games already available. My money would be on the Wii though :)

Wii currently in stock at Amazon.co.uk

Soooooooo tempted!

It's a bit like mobile phone virgins - if you've never had one you don't know how much use it's going to get, nor what features are really important to you.

Based on that presumption, then I would say go for a PS2 for a year. See what games you buy and play over a year and if, at the end of that, you are playing it enough to justify something else, see what prices Xbox360 and PS3s are.

You don't want a Wee for Christmas!

This is what I'm thinking especially now thanks to Gav I know the PS2 is six years old, also on Games website I'm sure it said the PS3 will take PS2 games. What is all this playing games online business? I don't think we will go crazy buying up all the games, he's into driving games so F1 06 is on the cards and I may buy the package that has the Buzz music game on it. I am desparate for sing star but he aint keen

Surely not that tempted at 465 quid.

When I looked they had new stock at £180. But I left it... all sold out again now though

I might be persuaded to sell my Wii, though obviously for less than £465....with Zelda.......

On topic now, I'd still have to say the Wii is the most accessible in terms of controllers - I still have issues with the 4 billion button combo's on the PS2 and found the controller for the Xbox to be so bulky as to be unuseable.

I have the PS2 and the Xbox 360. The PS2 is good value for money if you have never had a game system before, lots of games out there and they are very cheap to buy compaired to the X-box 360.

The 360 though is in a total different league to the PS2. Game play and graffics are very very nice and I'm sure if I had a HD tv it would just get better!

It also plays DVD very well, better than my DVD player does.

I'm not taken on the wii, ok I haven't tried it yet but it's new and hyped up, best waiting until it's all died down abit.

If Mr P is likely to be into drivers, unless you want to stick to multi-player party type games, it's PS2 or X360, in which case the real choice if you want something under the tree on the 25th is based on price. The X360 probly has more life ahead of it, but is about twice the prce of the PS2.

I don't go for on-line games so can't comment further.

Decide what kind of games you'll be playing and look what the consoles offer. I like my PS/2, but when I bought it there wasn't really a lot of competition  Costco had the original Xbox for around
