Uprated bulbs?

Featured Replies

Hello I'm looking to up rate the headlight bulbs on my 51 plate Octy Vrs and wasn't sure which to go for.

I want better vision but not the blue type and not sure on the type I already have whether it's H4 or H7.

Do I also need to change the side lights and fog lights(never use my fogs to be honest?

Details of who are recommended suppliers would also be appreciated.

Octavia uses an H4 bulb

I used the Osram 50% brighter bulbs from Power Bulbs - autobulbs, autolamps, xenon headlights, car bulbs, headlight bulbs, osram silverstar, silver star, philips vision plus, philips blue vision, bluevision. Have a google and you will probably find a discount code as well. When I last ordered they chucked in a few of blue tint sidelight bulbs (not that I intend to use them!)

I did note the day that they are selling their own brand at buy 1, get 1 free for about the same price as the Osrams.... but I have not tried those, so no idea on their performance.

Osram silverstars or phillips Vision plus :)

Phillips have just come out with an 80% brighter H4 too if you don't mind waiting a short while for the sellers to get stock.

another vote for the Silverstars from Powerbulbs:thumbup: ..fantastic bulbs & fantastic service...for info the free phillips bluevision sidelight 501's actually produce a white light not blue as the name suggests:confused:

Another vote for the Osram Silverstars:thumbup:

Also changed fogs for Osram's with yellow tint can't remember type.

If we are talking main beam lights, I cannot rate the 100 w rally bulbs on my fabia high enough. They are (of course)strictly for off road purposes *cough*

Halfords own are fine, you seriously see a lot more of the road and I think they are much safer.

Car passed an MOT with them on no worries.

.......

;) :P

Check my "as fitted" list (PVBH4). Top class lamps.

Plus, I did bother to fit the "Blue" side light lamps.

Cheers for all the feedback, I'll have a look on their site for info.

Are they easy to change? I've only ever had to access the indicator bulb holder.

100w are no use on octy as it is H4 so you would be running at least 80/100 bulbs (I've never seen 55/100 anyway) so your dipped beam would be blindingly bright.

Is the 80% brighter bulb classed as road legal?

Having recently had a laser eye op, I can find it quite painful when badly adjusted headlights shine at me (due to my increased sensivity to light)

(I've never seen 55/100)

I think Ring do a 55/100W bulb.

Pretty sure I spotted it in the demon tweeks catalogue that popped through the door the other day.

brother's got them in his. never been flashed/moaned at etc and passes MOT no probs

Within the last month Auto Express did a fairly wide test of bulbs I think Phillips vision plus were winners with Halfords own brand reccomended.

I think you'll be able to see the test on the Auto Express website.

Test was carried out with a Lupo headlight I think.

I have just ordered Phillips Extreme power from Powerbulbs at

Stoopid ,stoopid,stoopid question....

Do headlight bulbs fade with age? Or do they stay as bright as the day they were bought and just 'go'?

Mine are 5 years old and seem like old candles

I've never noticed mine fade, but I guess they probably should when compared to new. Don't think I've ever owned a car for 5 years to test though :rofl::rofl:

Nor me till the children were born and stole all my money, you should know that Chris:D

I was going to upgrade the bulbs but don't like these stories of them not lasting that long.

Thought I might just update the standard bulbs

The X-Treme are the 80% and are road legal and E marked.

Are the 55/100 E marked?

I found the silverstars lasted far longer than your normal aftermarket bulbs but then I have only ever had cars with H4 bulbs so who knows.

The Philips 30% brighter I had in my 306 lasted about a year and then failed.... But the Osrams have lastes longer in the Octy....

You're obviously more generous to them than me :P

I've had uprated bulbs in my last 3 cars. I've never had to replace my Osram Silverstars or Philips Rallye's in the best part of 120k miles of motoring :D

How do you get the plug out of the back of the headlight assembly? Mine won't budge and I'm reluctant to use force just in case I break it? Can anybody help?

(06 Octy, H7 low beam bulbs)

Phillips Rally Plus - the best H4 I have ever used, much much beter then Osram Silverstar's.

Phillips Rally Plus are "for off road use only" according to the packet. ;)

Yeah but who would ever know :) I never get flashed by other drivers either.
