new superb????

Featured Replies

If you buy a Superb, you really need to have its future mapped out because the depreciation is so dire.

If you look around, a highish mileage basic spec '04 Superb now costs the same as a diesel Fabia of the same age.

I can't imagine why anyone would buy one of these cars new - mine was about 1/2 list price at under 2 years/20k miles. I need a car of this specification for a particular job - and it's fine. I'm not under any illusions about what it will be worth.

VAG made a royal **** up of the Superb from a marketing point of view. Why offer 3 petrol engines in the UK when nobody buys them? Why no estate - the LWB chassis would have made a great 7 seater. The final insult was to produce the Superb with all the design faults of the B5.5 Passat (water ingress etc. etc.).

The Skoda dealers are now getting as arrogant as those in the rest of the VAG group - this will not go down well with people who have more sense than money.

If VAG do any of this with the MkII Superb, that will be a lemon too.

The one you put up is a photoshop based on the 'espionage' pictures of the actual car. Both are fairly similar though - a Skoda boss man recently said about those leaked photos:

Q: In an interview for

I have had a MY2000 Passat from new and for me the main reason for buying this car was that the A4 was too small and the A6 was too big (and both a bit expensive new), but both the Passat and the Suberb inherit a lot of good design aspects of the Audis - that is why, when I come to change the Passat I am affraid that it will not be the stretched Golf type Passat - hopefully it will be a second hand A6 as they drop value quicker than the A4 and are that bit bigger. Remember there is NO Audi design heritage in this VW - I've used a new Passat for a few days but even forgetting about the electric handbrake, the car just seemed a lot more down market than the B5.

I wish I could forget about the electric handbrake on the B6. It's a lousy solution to a problem which doesn't exist.

I would imagine that a hill start on a manual B6 with a trailer loaded to capacity would see off the clutch in a few goes - if it ever made it up the hill.

If Skoda base the new Superb on the PQ35 floorpan as logically they must, I hope this detail and all the rattles in the VW are left out.

I drove one of those new Passats up a very steep hill in traffic, stalled it 6 times! It didn't have the auto hold facility, so catching it on the clutch, then that stupid key put me off buying it!

Bad move VW!

Our new car search started with the Passat. Had 2 on extended test drives on SEL specs. Trim fell off both cars during their time with us (different dealers) and on the last one we were told to ignore the squeaking noise from the rear wheels. Having since read in motoring press I now wonder if the noise was the rear wheel bearing problems which seems to affect the cars. Both models were new demo's with less than 1000 miles on the clock. We also hated the low rent interior but that's another story.

Yes, the Superb replacement must be based on the stretched Golf platform due to VW needing to break loose from Audi's "very high to manufacture" designs. Incidentally, the Superb started life as the Passat Plus, just the standard Passat body with a short spacer in front of the fire wall so that V8 engines would fit and a short spacer in the passenger compartment to improve rear leg room. This was seen as VAG going the BMC route and creating a bit of overlap or internal competition. When the plug was pulling on this extra VW car, the front spacer was removed and the design was passed to Skoda to let them have a large'sh car and continue to make some use out of this design work. Mind you VAG knows how to stretch cars - take the Cordoba estate as an example. On the subject of electric handbrakes, I bumped into some write ups on the TRW site and the electric handbrake they were boasting about just happened to have a VW indent on it - no doubt it is the way forward - plus you need VAG-COM or similar if you need to strip or replace the rear pads! Back in April I was parked next to a B6 Passat, as the lady went to drive away (parked facing downhill near a wooden fence), first there was the crunch of the front against the fence then the expected 6 or 8 attempts to get away without stalling - as you have already said "a cure for a problem that does not exist". I think that it might work okay with the hill start option (could not be worse). The car hirer that brought the B6 loaner car to me boasted about the fact that in theory you would put the hand brake on at speed for a laugh - eh? what the f---?

I didn't think you could apply the hand brake unless you had your foot on the foot brake, in any case, for someone to even contemplate doing that shouldn't be on the road anyway!

Hope the wheels on the production model are more circular than that! Either way, I am looking forward to this car coming along!

Yes but in reality you only need to caress the brake pedal, anyway the car had 1500 miles on the clock plus a notice that said "if you smoke in this car we will charge you for valeting", problem is I have not smoked for about 25 years and that car smelt like it had been lived in by 4 smokers for 24/7 of its life - maybe that added to my dislike of it - oh and the boot does not have gas struts just springs - probably due to the electric boot release function - so shutting the boot sounds like closing a biscuit tin. All in all not a desirable experience or a car I would buy in the future (hope I don't need to eat my words) - I can't see the 4Motion one being any more interesting sadly.

No, you don't need to press the foot brake to operate the handbrake. Just push it and it applies. It will release automatically as you reach bite point. You need to have your seatbelt on, otherwise you need to push the foot brake.

Operating the handbrake at speed will initiate a full emergency stop. It applies to all four wheels.

I don't unnderstand why people find the button so hard for hill starts. Apply revs, rasie clutch, and away you go. Easy!

Is that the one with the 'auto hill hold' button? The one I drove didnt have this, so it was foot on foot brake, depress clutch, press button, then jump from foot brake to throttle before the bite point stalls the ticking over engine.

Thats the point I was getting at.

Nope, just have the standard parking brake on mine.

Maybe I've just got a good one?

What was wrong with the standard handbrake in the first place?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" should have been considered.

COME TO MUMMA!!!!!! :D

Goddamit, it never looked that good in the factory shots, I got a right mind fug going on now, do I go for the Vectra D or this when they arrive, residuals say this one tbh

I can't understand ppl saying dire residuals, I paid way more than I thought I would for mine, but I had to, there are only ever a few examples of my spec one available at any time, and I'm still seeing the same car as mine for

That looks ace! Of course it's not official, but some of the "guess sketches" for the new Fabia were fairly accurate. It has the Joyster front!

We're supposed to see a "design study" of the new Superb at Geneva with the real one being launched later next year.

There's a rumour that it will have a split hatch which opens as a saloon or hatch.

i like it, it looks the dogs Boll**

Another computer generated photo from a German magazine, looks pretty accurate compared to the spy shots. It seems like the new Superb will be very much Passat based with different detailing, but from the spyshots and these that's no bad thing, looks good. Also, Skoda say they want sales to be 200% up on the current Superb. Don't think they'll have any problem with that!

Hmm. Numberplate in a damn silly position for fitting a towbar. They will have troulble shifting these if they make the same marketing balls up they made with the B5.5 Superb. No estate = no deal.

Still no rear wiper.

rotodiesel.

There is supposed to be an estate on the way plus 4 wheel drive transmission.

This is a photoshop so details like number plate position or no rear wiper might not be accurate. Can't see either being a huge problem though?

I wouldn't buy one if it is simply a passat in skoda badges...I got mine as its bigger than a passat, only just but it makes a difference.

I guess we will see in a few months time (launch in March at Geneva) I like the shape of the Passat but from the spyshots the Skoda styling might make it a bit more aggressive and of course you would get more for your money too, plus the cool boot thing :)

The rear wheel looks really small compared to the fender, hope the proportions are better on the real Superb.

This Superb looks great and I am sure if it is priced correctly then it will sell along with some more toys than the Passat which IMHO is the Passat's biggest downfall...

I would suggest that not all Superb owners buy their car for towing and I am sure that if that is the final Superb then there will be a 'Swan-neck' style system for towing....

As for there being no rear wiper.....how many current saloon car's do you know on the market that have a wiper fitted.....not that many and the reason is because you have no real need for it.......just my 2p.....
