I'm in the process of refurbing my 17x7.5"futuras and was wondering what colour people think i should powder coat them. I'm leaning towards gloss black at the moment, I think on a red car it should look schweet...... But what do you think?

I've been stripping the paint by hand using good old nitromors style gloop, soft wire brushes and a putty knife on the flat surfaces. Oh how I'd love a garage....

Before on the right and after on the left, it still needs a light sand before powder coating.

Next jobs are to polish 140 bolts (oh the fun! ) and get some real carbon fibre centre rings made up. I have been toying with the idea of getting some 1.5" or 2" dishes to go for the staggered euro look but i'm not too sure.

Why not get new ones? (In fact, I once read the recommendation that if you dismantle split-rim wheels it's good practice to reassemble with new fastenings)

I have considered that and may still do, but after speaking to a few experts they have recommended sticking with the genuine OZ bolts, apparently the torque rating isn't enough to stretch them or something like that.....but i'll have to see how time consuming it is.

They are gonna look amazing when they are finished and stuck onto your Furby. Really like the split rim look.

Black or anthracite on a red car will be awesome! I went for anthracite out the two. I nearly got some wheels coloured that way for my car.

Anthracite. Would look way better IMHO!! :)

Cheers for the input  Here's another pic for good measure :D

I Have black rims on my red fabia.. they look very cool... but i voted for dark grey, coz black is horrible when it comes to cleaning...

I will be following this topic then there will be at least 2 fabias on oz futuras

If you want i will send pictures off full polished ones not on the car at the moment waiting till after the winter

Some close ups of your wheels would be nice....Did you re-use the genuine OZ bolts or buy aftermarket items?

These are just going to be summer wheels for me, I have other wheels for winter.

I managed to get another 1" dish after but i'm still very tempted to use a 1.5" on the rears :)

I think that the bolts are aftermarket

I bought them like this

And are the rare in size 5x100 ?

Wow they look awesome....they are very rare now in 5x100, i've seen a few refurbed/new sets go for BBS RS301 money recently :D good for me considering i've got a spare set :D

Have you got 7.5" front 8" rear or 8" all round? Just that in the last pic looks like a 7.5" on the left and an 8" on the right.....

Yes 7.5 and 8

And i know the aren

Looking very nice

Sorry to semi steal the thread but any chance you could give me some points or a place of info for refurbing alloys. Would like to have a go on a set I have laying about.

Have you thought about White? Red and White is a good colour combo , as it is seen on all the best football shirts.....;)

Have made some good progress this last week....

I've disassembled the 2nd set of wheels now ready for stripping, the 1st set I just need to strip one star and two caps, and give everything a light sand/scotchbrite before they go for powder coating, my MOs are going in for powder coating on Monday so I need to get bizay on these over the weekend and get them in at the same time.

Out of the two lots of bolts i'm going to salvage enough for one set and order new for the other set, some are a bit scabby but the rest polished up nice.

I've found a company who will make me some replacement genuine carbon fibre centre rings at a very good price, have also ordered new bolts for these.

Finally have chemically stripped the dishes, cleaned off any remaining laquer with steel wool, then I used 600grt wet and dry on the outer edge of the dish, then 800 followed by 1000, I'll probably go up to 1500 or 2000 before polishing.

More updates and pics soon....

The easy and cheap way is to get the the tyres, weights and valves off at a local tyre fitter, get them shot blasted, clean up the outer edges if needed then get 'em powder coated. Proper job :D

Not good for keeping clean tho, my MOs were white when I bought them and they always looked grubby. :thumbdwn:

I know , I had white Mo's on my Lancer GTi-16V about 10 years ago , I remember T cutting the brake dust off the fronts every week , as normal polish wouldnt shift it! They looked good when I was finished though!

  • 2 months later...

And any new on this ?

Dark Grey looks stunning.

The Futara was a standard fitment by Lotus on the Esprit S4s and I got some for my 4cyl Car. I've so far managed to polish up the outer parts but I haven't got round to spraying the inside yet. When I do I was going for the dark grey as well. Looks ace on a white car too.

Did you have to get the special tool for removing the bolts??

Cheers

No real news yet i'm afraid, have been really busy with work the last month or two.

I've got one set fully stripped, just need to paint, polish the dishes and assemble, this set will be for sale though and i'll refurb a set for myself in a month or two.

Can I interest anyone in a nice set of Futuras?:D

I had to buy a tool, I can't remember if it's a 9 or 10 point spline but it cost nearly £50 from Germany.

Do you have the name of the people whi can redo the centre's for you and how much are they if you don't mind saying??

Several of my esprit mates would be interesting in getting new ones of these as the do seem to shatter easily.

Cheers

I just decided I have wheel envy..... They are gorgeous!!!

Can't wait to see them finished. Having seen the polished ones, I'd be tempted to do one set polished, and one set anthracite.

Comp MO's too? I thought I had a wheel fetish, but you make me look amateur. White MO's on a Fabia would look the dogs danglies.
