How dangerous is an'egg'on the sidewall?

Featured Replies

Kerbed Jane's Fabia in the fog. When I say kerbed ,I mean at about 40 mph:(

Bit of wheel damage, but more worrying is the little egg shaped bubble that has appeared on the tyre sidewall.Tyre hasn't gone flat though.

Presume it is knackered? Seems to drive ok

(sick of tyres, replaced four on my octy only to get immediate nail punture in one and now this! aaargh):)

It's an MOT failure and if spotted by the police would get you a mimimum of a vehicle rectification notice. Not sure of the safety implications but I'm sure it's an MOT failure for a reason.

Get it changed IMMEDIATELY!. Although the tyre may still be inflated the tyre wall construction will have been severly weakened with any further knock or hard cornering could lead to catastrophic failure (a bit over dramatic I know, but you get the picture  )

It's dangerous !

Don't drive with that, change the wheel for the spare.

Change it yesterday! As others have said, it may well now be prone to blowing out. At the very least, get a tyre place to have a look at it and confirm our opinions!

Basically the 2 or more layers of the side wall have seperated allowing air into the side wall thus creating a bluge. In other words the tyre is knackered! Change it!

Mine did this on the original Conti's three days before I was changing the tyres anyway. No reason; no knocks or anything.

I wouldn't (and didn't) drive it. Common sense says no.

Get rid - I've had a tyre blowout on a push bike (mountain bike) and that destroyed the plastic guard + bent some metal bits at the time.

Really annoying when it happens though, bl*dy tyres are expensive :(

PS What tyre are you after, IIRC I've got one still which I wouldn't mind getting rid of, and as you are in the Midlands, it can't be all that far away I would image :D

Will have a look tonight when I get home to tell you exactly which one it is :)

Definately do not drive on it. The sidewall structure has been damaged and the tyre could deflate suddenly or the carcass could lose shape or even fall apart.

Chris

sidewall has been damaged causing an effect not too dis-similar to a hernia.. of the sidewall.. DO NOT DRIVE ON IT , in fact PUT THE BLOODY SPARE ON to drive to the Tyre Place :)

IMO: Get it changed. It's not a decision you're making for your own safety but for your GF's.

If there was only a very minor bulge (say 5p,10p sized) I think I'd drive on it but carefully. My Fabia had a huge bulge on the inside rim of one of the front wheels which was discovered at a service. Having seen the damage, there was no way I'd drive any further on it.

J.

And the most important question, have you broken the news to her yet, or are you going to change it on the sly so she's none the wiser?

Cheers for the advice folks

WW-VRS much appreciated but sorted:thumbup: It's what I like about this site.Very helpful

How come damage to tyres is always the non repairable kind though:(

Sods low annoyingly on that one ;)

Generally this tends to happen to me less than 1000 miles after putting new tyres on, making it even more fun :P

I'll probably flog the tyre I've got on standby then :) Glad you're sorted :)

how true is that.. iI had a blow out as I was droping down off the M/way near home cuople of days before christmas.. new tyre.. :(.. missus wasnt best pleased seeing as I had only bought a new battery a few days previously...

had a puncture over christmas non-repairable.. tyre is only 4 months old like new so went to replace it, only to find out that conti sport contacts are no longer available so i could have "something like" decided not to have 2 different tread patterns on the fronts so had to replace 2 fronts at over 200 quid. dont ya hate the law of sod

This is not safe as mentioned - the side wall is weak and can cause mor damage than need be if not replaced asap...
