Commodore Amiga / Retro Computing thread

Featured Replies

More really of a follow on from the other thread we hijacked

As said before.. i was well into Amigas before PC's - had a A600hdd and a A1200 Hdd

Fave games were:

Super stardust

Supercars 2 (old A500 classic - needed kickstart 1.3 to run right on the A600)

Skidmarks AGA - was great little addictive game especially the caravan races

Oh, and StuntCar Racer... Still unrivalled in the modern age for uberness

Had a breif look round google last night.. and apparently theres a new "workbench" for the Amigas called OS4.. the scene is still well n truly alive!

And just to compare:

My A600 was bought in 1995 - had 2mb of ram and a 7mhz cpu..

the A1200 had a massive 14mhz 32bit cpu

So 10 years on.. my PC has "approximately" 400 times more power (2.8ghz Athlon)

and 1000 times more memory

And probably consumes 1000times more electricity too

Unsuprisingly the PC isnt 1000 times more fun or more useful... progress eh

i had one of those zx spectrums thingies, pure computing legend that thing!!! till i dropped it down the stairs

So many good games , so little time to play them :D , and yes many of the ones I have now have hand written labels on them :)

Remember "It came from the desert" , and "antheads".

I loved them at the time.

Supercars2 was an excellent game , as was Stunt Car Racer , especially when networked.

I probably played Elite more than anything , though populous came close.

i still have memories of those cassettes, and the high pitch squeling it made as it loaded the games

i was in the Commodore64 camp. Upgraded it by replacing the tape deck with a floppy drive. Was amazed at how quick things would load after that. It was a C64-2 version with the new case ( first versions shared the Vic 20 case on which it was based ). Its still round me mums somewhere.

My favourite Amiga games:

Dynablaster

Shadow of the Beast II

Days of Thunder

Prince of Persia

Geoff Crammond's Formula One game - the name of which escapes me.

Loved my commodore 64. The c64c which you had also had an improved sound processor. My next door neighbour had the vic20 shaped one and the music on mine was so much better. Only problem was that for some reason speach was a lot quieter on the c64c.

Still got mine in the loft. Floppyt drive and action replay cartridge still intact. You could load a cassette game, freeze it with action replay once it had loaded, then copy it to floppy disk. The game would then load off floppy in 6 seconds. Wonderfull stuff.

I bought my c64 with the money from selling my spectrum 48k+

Favourite c64 game was Last Ninja series

Amiga's were awesome. fav games were

It came from the desert

Sensible soccer

Cannon fodder

Kick Off 2

Shadow of the beast

Pinball Dreams/Fantasy's

Superfrog

Project X

Last Samurai

ahh yes.. stuntcar racer over a null modem cable  - was a rare game that could make the satisfaction of a perfectly executed takeoff turn to pure horror as you over-shoot the landing ramp and end up with a couple of "holes" on your rollbar/damage meter.. it was probably the first car-game to have 3d physics..

and supercars 2.. where you *always* got royally f**ked by that enviromental byach with a cat poster on the wall

I was hugely addicted to Elite First Encounters.. altho when i switched to the PC version i was put off with it being hugely buggy :( - might give that another go, tiz shareware now. i still have fond memories of my Viper Mk2 with class 2 milatary drive, a range of 14LY per jump, a couple of shield generators, hull auto-repair and a 4mw beam laser :D small ship but packed quite a big punch, and was uber manuverable too

EDIT:

Also the original LEMMINGS

Cannon fodder..... "war has never been so much fun, war has never been sooo much fun" LOL

Im soo getting some retro gaming done this weekend... wonder if WinUAE works in vista :D

What about that top down alien shoot-em-up game? Cant remember what it was called though :(

Heimdall RPG

Settlers 2

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge

Jaguar XJ220

EDIT: Gav - I have installed Cannon Fodde ron that old handset of yours - just like the original.

Let me know if it does.

M1 Tank Platoon

F19 Stealth Fighter

Brother had an A500 (not plus) and I later on got a CD32 with the expansion at the back to give you more memory support, 2.5 hdd support, kickstart roms and all the ports.

Loved the A500.

Fav games

F1GP

Another World

Flashback

Lemmings (original)

new zealand story

Stunt Car racer

I had an A500 but later on got the A1200 with a 4mb (IIRC) RAM expansion, external floppy drive and the PCMCIA hard drive.

The hard drive upgrade was the best thing I could have done - made games like the 11 disc Monkey Island II much more enjoyable.

Another big Amiga fan here. Found a load of floppies the other day, just have nothing to play them on.

I still use workbench, and play some of the games using WinUAE on my PC at home.

Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions. Still play those, indeed I was lastnight.

I had a fair few amigas over the years.

A500 with Kickstart 1.2 (broke down after agnus failed)

A500 with Kickstart 1.3 and external 20MB HD. (yes 20MB).

A500+ with same external drive, later replaced with GVP external 60MB unit with addtional 8MB ram.

A1200 with 100MB HD.

I also had an Action Replay cartridge for the A500.

Used to love training it to let me cheat in games - also handy for copying games of course

Forgot about that game

ALIEN BREED! :) :) :)

My favourite - I had copies of both AB1 and AB2 on my A500 with the wikkidy wikkidy waa waa one-Meg upgrade (bought second-hand for the princely sum of

What was the difference between the A1200 and the A4000 then? I always fancied a 4000 because it looked more impressive

the A4000 was very powerful... 40mhz 68040 iirc

I remember trying to trade my A600 in for a A1500 and loosing my rag at the bloke because he wouldnt give me decent money for the A600

The A4000 had better graphics processing to, and was used in the TV and video industry. I can remember what the expansion card was you could put in it was called though.

A4000s still go for very good money on ebay, as they are still a sought after machine.
