Gunge under filler cap

Featured Replies

I have a felicia with a 1.6 engine.

When i checked the fluids today I noticed a lot of gunge on the oil filler cap and on looking at it closer there was a lot in the top of the engine.

The oil on the dipstick is fine - still looks new and the water has no sign of any oil in it.

The car runs fine and does not boil.

Do I need to worry about the gunge? I know 1.3 engines can produce gunge but I thought that 1.6 engines were not prone to it.

Thanks

Its probably just condensation in the cam cover.

all engines are prone to it if you only do short journeys,

do you only do short journeys?

is it beige'y' mucky goo?

Yes it is beige coloured - I am only worried because there is so much of it

then i am quite sure as already said its just condensation.

Oil does seperate and forms that sludgy film. Change the oil and filter.

* i do this might get shouted at but........ when empty run the engine for about 20secs to get all old oil out, with drain plug and filter off. causes a mess a bit too. Then put in some new oil, the filter and drain plug. Just a bit of new mind. Run the car again and empty once more (hence only a little oil) That should have got all the old out 99.1% anyway.

Use a good quality oil and see from there. Very importatnt you dont over fill the oil too (dont mean you are stupid, we all do it thinking thats good for the engine..... it so is not).

If you are worried about head gasket or block, you'll notice duff performance and a slightly white exhaust fumes. *awaits an expert to correct me :)

give it a go and let us know

Hello,

My W reg 1.6Glxi generally has the gunge on the oil filler cap...It only gets a 5 mile daily run to work and back....if it gets a longer run then this condensation? effect clears...only to return following the short work runs again...

...touchwood....it has never ever used a drop of oil.

All the best,

Clive.
