Vista Ultimate Rocks

Your right of course and as I say, by the very nature of my business I am not a microsoft basher, but it's late being released to the public and vendors should have their fingers out of their arses with regards to drivers, it's not like they have not had their beta or rc's for a short period of time.

I am pretty peeved with nvidia in particular as I have got a couple of 8800gtx's and a 7900gs in use. I will stick with XP for another 6 months or so and let drivers stabilise and a few patch's make it out.

Want some Irony ........ the official (MOC)Vista course is run ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................on windows XP SP1 with virtual PC :D

Your not the only one peeved with the big NV... Especially as i have a Nforce4 mobo and 7800gt whos fan stays on 100% all the time  and the nforce4 chipset has an "issue" with pci latency which screws up sound in games.

As for your gaming issues.. i agree in your case - being all SLI'ed up but vista isnt so bad for me, im not a FPS whore and ive yet to find a game that i cant run maxed on my system (sound problems aside)

Have you tried supreme commander yet... thats quite a nice game... also is the first game ive seen to make use of the vista system rating system...

it has a "reccomended" system rating of 5. - which is a shame because mine is 4.3 - let down by the CPU, everything else is 5+

Ket's see if I've understood this correctly. A Wurd 2007 file with an "included graphic" will always include a copy of the original file, rather than a link?

Yup, but you can have linked graphics as well.

There are apps in os x for 99% of windows apps

As for paying the price of the hardware. If you do a 100% comparison you will see that its not as expensive as you think.

I've been in IT for 10 years now, and an enthusiast for 5 years before that.... Macs have always been more expensive like for like. Only now are they getting a "little" cheaper due to the use of intel.

Oh and there is a difference between and app that does something similar on a mac to an app on a PC to a Mac "version" of a PC app.

For example... you can't get VAGCOM for a Mac

but you could boot xp on your mac and then use it!?!? Its a win win situation!

Hang on, we were talking about mac os not mac hardware. All apple are doing now is selling an expensive PC with some custom firmware instead of a BIOS......

hmmm now tell me why apple have done that ?

With this... clicky :)

Quite simple really; Motorola processors were not keeping pace with Intel and AMD ones.

Erm the last set of chips for the Mac were IBM, not motorola. They haven't been motorola since they moved to the PowerPC architecture.

And the change is because IBM shafted Apple and changed the processor roadmap, massively upping development costs and dropping productions volumes for Apple. All because Sony wanted to use IBM mutli-core chips for the playstation 3

Or that IBM just wanted rid of Apple as they're now making the chips for all the latest consoles... :)

theres no benifits to 64bit home computing.. its a marketing gimmick thats more trouble than its worth.

have a read of this

My bro has got vista 64bit on his athlon system.. and theres no point to it..

theres 2 internet explorer icons (32bit and 64bit) to maintain compatibility with internet plugins like flash, java and others that dont do 64bit..

other than that theres no performance increase, youll struggle getting 64bit drivers for your hardware etc etc.

All versions of vista except home basic have the fancy moves..

wheres this second internet explorer icon then? Been running 64 bit home premium since before release and I dont have two icons and everything I have tried works lovely. Half life 2 for instance detects 64bit code and runs smoother then it did in xp.

The G4 processors were made by Motorola but designed by IBM the G5 processors were made by IBM though

I'm leaning towards removing Vista and going back to XP. I might try a clean Vista build first though, see if it gets rid of the annoying issues I have.

My pictures screensaver crashes without fail. I get random crashes from video apps, including Windows Movie Maker which just crashes for fun 99% of the time. I also have a few small (probably badly written) apps that don't work properly on Vista.

If I plug in my webcam it kills Live Messenger so thoroughly that I have to uninstall and reinstall it before it will even run.

It is no more reliable than RC2 was on my PC and that's annoying. I agree with the view that you should wait for SP1, or wait until you buy a new PC from a manufacturer who has proper, supported drivers.

Sounds more like driver problems Rob. Was your install an upgrade ? Are you using the latest drivers for all your devices ?

You can run your apps that don't seem to work to well in Xp compatibility mode as well. I had to do this for my nokia apps.

Mine played up big style for the first time today and every app crashed.

At one point I had a nice message saying "windows help and support encountered a problem and needed to close".

I've had some applications crash before , but that's no great surprise - if the code of the OS was exactly the same there'd be no point upgrading

Why should the kernel code change, just because you want to install a flashier X implimentation.

Why should the kernel code change, just because you want to install a flashier X implimentation.

To make it faster , more secure , add extra features etc etc.

Plus it's well known that there are "correct" ways of writing programs and bodges that don't use the official Microsoft support method of doing things.

The bodges may work ok on XP but won't necessarily behave the same on Vista - hence programs not behaving as expected and Microsoft still getting the blame

Why should the kernel code change, just because you want to install a flashier X implimentation.

Believe me if you look at the code, and read a few MSDN/Technet articles on Vista you'll realise it's had a major code rewrite.

...the majority of people i come across who are PC mad that say they dont want to buy a mac, is because they are tight fisted and want a

I purchased an iMac just before Christmas and ditched my ageing Dell XP.

3 months on and nothing would make me ever want to buy a Pc with Microsoft installed.

Everything is sooooo much easier on a Mac, from the basics, printing to web publishing, iphoto is just great and itunes on a mac is much easier than it ever was on a pc.

Even the Safari browser (with RRS Feed) is leagues ahead of Explorer/Navigator etc.....

I'm sure more people will move to Mac's what with their new advertising campaign, iphone etc.....

I'm sure Open Office is lovely, if you can get it to start up without crashing. The rare times that it will start, the font rendering is so crap as to be virtually unusable. I'll always need a Windows machine for a reliable Office product for the time being anyway.

At the end of the day it's personal choice. The cost, lack of software that I use, the tie in to Apple, etc etc is why I prefer Vista to OS X.

Oh and a PCs can be setup to be as easy to use as a Mac. It's just that Macs come from Apple dummified and pre-setup from the factory

PM me if you want any info on getting Vista for free, forever (any version) :)

DreamScene was downloaded via a Torrent (BETA version) and it works flawlessly, however I now see it's available as a windows update as a "preview".

BTW any issues associated with Vista fonts are easily sorted with a .reg file from Chris Pirillo, Fix Windows Vista’s Fonts! ~ Chris Pirillo

You can change the defaults in his .reg file easily, as i'm no fan of Segoe UI, I have chosen Verdana :)

I have to admit ive had problems with videos on vista... codecs are hit and miss... i know that divx and nerovision currently have known problems with vista (as you say causing it to crash)

im currenlty using somethin called vista codec pack which seems to be working quite well..

Only re-occouring issue i have now is explorer locks up when browsing a samba share on my fileserver.. and even then it only seems to be in deep folder structures with say lots of pictures/videos.. it looks like it tries to index them... the network usage goes mad
