Dripping side mirrors after carwash driving me nuts!

Featured Replies

As it says above, Every time the Fabia is washed and dried, I take it out on the motorway about 5 minutes later and the mirrors release a couple of tablespoonsfuls of water, spoiling the appearance of the sides/windows.

Any fixes? Shouldn't there be some sort of drainage hole system at the bottom of the mirrors?

Only thing I found so far that I don't like about the fabia, hehehe.....

Any fixes?

Wait longer than 5 mins ;)

Drill a hole in the bottom of each mirror? If you're like me you'd need to do 3 mirrors. One to fsck up completely and eventually dismantle. 2 and 3 to drill properly and refit to the car.

A slightly more serious suggestion - can you give it a blast of air to get rid of the residual water in there? I'm thinking of the airline if you use a petrol station car wash, or maybe a hairdryer at home?

I love my dremel like Jase loves his angle grinder! (well maybe not as obsessively, I don't keep it under my pillow, but you get the general idea....)

Where do I drill mate exactly? Dripping is driving me mad....

Just an idea but how about using a garden vac/blower to blow the water out of the crevices. Alot of detailers use this method though you do look a bit of a **** while doing it.

Im glad I'm not the only person that this annoys! What I do is I take a chammy with me and after a few miles I park somewhere and wipe all the excess water up with that (not just from the mirrors , theres usually some that dribbles from the base of the tailgate and the bottom of the doors too!!) I have to do this before waxing the car otherwise you get lots of wet smear marks everywhere!

Why not take some plastic bags and some tape and cover the mirrors up..:) ..Stretch some condoms over them......... ...................:D

Wash it, drive it, polish it. That way when to do a photo shoot the discs are

not rusty :)

Lubricated? flavoured? studded?

Perhaps "Black Magic" to suit the car?

No, I want to dremel-drill some tiny holes at the bottom where the water pools.

Just gotta plan where to go in........

If you drive fast enough it should all blow away :D

Basil's next post: High pitched whistle at speed :) :)

Don't you have high pressure hoses there? When I take mine for a wash I make sure I clean the water out of them with a high pressure hose, since the guys at the wash don't really pay attention to stuff like that.

Personally, I think they'll always cause some problems with dripping. Only thing I can think of is to park the car facing up a hill before washing it... :roll

I don't think I'd want to drill a hole or dremel one from the outside as it's likely to leave a raised section inside the mirror housing. Unless it's possible to access the inside and smooth it off, I don't think I'll bother.

It's no good. I'm lost here. If wind is hitting the outer case at speed (velocity), isn't it only when you stop that the water would run out and fall to ground? Can't you just tuck a Kleenex under the mirror gap after you've washed it, or give the windows and doors a quick rub over with a damp cloth?

Mo - ever the sharpest knife :)

finally, something I can complain about!!

will have to bite the bullet and move my compressor down from the roof to use every time I wash the car.......

There must be an easier way to do things....

Cheers all

Mo, the outer case isn't a uniform shape, so higher and lower pressure areas form around it. Turbulence and buffeting will also occur which will tend to slosh around any water attached/trapped or pooled in the mirrors.

If anyone susses out how to dismantle the mirror please PM me, Im going to try and make some puddle lights and need to know where to drill!

Thanks Vindaloo :)

Clutching at straws here - talking of which, blowing through a bendy straw might do it ;)

A palm-held squeezy puffer might blow water out, or this sort on ebay: puffer However, as the lip of the basin is probably a deterrent, I'd probably try "suctioning" (like how blood samples are taken), e.g. a small diameter plastic hose over the tube of a bicyle pump, inserted into the gap, then drawing the pump back.

Knitting (stitches?) after suction, reads like Casualty :D

'Tis OK. Basil might have something suitable in his Gladstone bag (as carried by doctors). Of course, one needs a brief case to carry knitting patterns flat - oh and for one's sarnies, of course :)
