Crack appeared on windscreen!!!!!

Featured Replies

after driving back from london on sunday I noticed a line down my window on the passenger side, starting from well below the windscreen wipers and going up and curving towards the middle of the screen:eek:

for a split second I wished it wasn't what I thought it was, and it was.

On closer inspection it was infact a big f'ing crack line. about 8 inch in length with a chip just above the wipers.

after driving to work today the crack has increased in size and is about 10 inch now

Gutted!

I lost mine after one of the Cat & Fiddle meets; a loud TWACK!!! whilst following a quarry lorry. I replaced it with one with a green sunstrip, which I think is an improvement (there are a variety of colours, apparently).

i had my screen replaced last time with a grey sun strip rather than the green i had before and it looks a lot classier :)

they did ask me if it was tinted or not?

I said it was standard for the car...shall I tell them tomorrow it has a sunstrip on it?

I guessed they would just replace like for like?

I'm a little worried that it won't be the same quality of finish as the oem one? any ideas?

will be using Auto Glass...any good?

Yeah, I am on my third screen. The VRS is fitted with a green tinted/grey strip.

Or was it grey tint/green strip?

Bah, one of the two. Any how I just call the insurance and pay the £50. The screens are not genuine but I doubt it makes much difference.

a fake windscreen? some people

only kidding, so that's a big part of my car that will now not be genuine

will the fitting be good quality though?

I'm gonna get mine changed at some stage, the most annoying thing was that I just got the chips sorted out to prevent the screen cracking, then the week after I got a little rock hit right at the right-hand side of the screen which then cracked down. It would be an MOT failure but as it's not due one as yet and it hasnt spread further since, it's been left for now.

Once the car is back up and running properly I will look into it again though :)

Changing your windscreen will also void your Warranty. And it won't be good fitting, and it will look completely different! That what you wanted to hear? ;)

On a more serious note. Wait until the work is done, it's not possible for anyone to answer if the work done will be a good'un.

Don't worry about it so much. The people fitting it and supplying it, I'm sure will have fitted Windscreen's to much more expensive cars...

thanks mate, didin't want to hear bad news at all, just was unsure of comparision between old and new and what people opinions were, I mean I can't go back on what is happened I need a new window.

Had lots of windscreens replaced.

Hopefully you will be using autoglass, they use genuine oem glass. RAC autowindscreens make their own for normal cars and only get the OEM for specialist applications, eg. porsche. I used autoglass for 2 replacement screens on my ex. octy mk1 vRS, and the glass came from the same factory as the original screen and all the logos and markings were the same as the original.

You will need to tell them the current screen has a tinted shadeband and its colour, otherwise you will get plain untinted glass as fitted to lesser models.

Once fitted you shouldnt see any sign that its a replacement screen.

Deffo gonna go autoglass in that case, thanks for that tip

Had mine changed about 18 months ago, used AutoGlass, who told me that I had the grey sunstrip:O , just shows how much notice i took, even though I looked through it every time I drove

They were good, and even put the plastic parking ticket holder back in the correct place, when the screen was done . :)

Hi,

Autoglass did mine and made a very neat job. Well organised and no problems. Very pleased.

Make sure they don't remove the parking ticket holder! :D

they rang today and arranged to swap the screen on monday. I told them it has a greay shadeband thing at the top. orignally they were going to have to order me a screen but since I told them it had the shadeband they said they were in stock of that one

Autoglass it is!

Had a windscreen repaired by auto glass in Asda's car park, First class Repair, First Class service and it was Free.........First Class!!
