Monster Tyre Wear - 2.0 TDI 140 BHP DSG

Featured Replies

My Fabia vRS does between 10-14k on the fronts. Mostly motorway driving though, admittedly

I replaced fronts at 16500mls and rotated rear to front so old ones went on front! I've just had them done at 19400 although I could have got a bit more out of them?! same issue excessive wear on inner tread. Dealer checked tracking at about 17500 and said it was OK? I'm tempted to go get 4 wheel laser tracking done to double check?

As for driving habits - I got the Sports suspension to improve the handling! and don't do very much motorway mileage.

Had my latest tyres from Event Mobile Tyres - Your Local Mobile Tyre Fitting Service btw highly recommend

I have a similar problem; inside 2cm bald in 5k with nylons showing at 7k. The rest of the tyre is still legal, with plenty of tred remaining! The car had it's 4th 4 wheel alignment today in 8 months to try an track problem, but without success.

Garage has concluded tracking is not the problem.

Ah so I may have an issue - the cars is currently at Griffin Mill and I won't be suprised if it gets handed back "nothing found"

The service guy muttered that they will check the suspension ???

Perhaps an all round laser allgnment may do the trick, as previosly stated the s/wheels not straight.

As well as checking tracking I assume the camber angles are being checked.

Those who scrub the rears out quickly, do you tend to run the car a lot with it heavily loaded, if you push the car down it may put more load on the inside of the tyre. Skoda should have designed for this anyway

Well got the car back...

Cant see anything wrong with it - equal tyre wear on both tyres (thinking about it i should have asked for a copy of the work sheet). I'll give them a call tomorrow.

They also said that the lease company must lease loads of these car's so will know what standard and excessive is - I can't believe many people lease a 2.0TDi DSG with Sports suspension from a single company?

I have checked with the Lease company and they are happy to replace both tyres and have noted the "excessive tyre wear". The fleet manager said that it may be down to a softer compound of tyre and perhaps i can get a firmer one?

How do I know ? I must admit I'm quite angry but if they are 'included' in the lease costs them assuming they don't refuse at any point - do i care?

Anyone recommend a decent tyre - should I just accept the Pirelli P600's that they are bound to replace the Dunlops with??

It continues....

The tyre readouts are as follows

OSF 444

NSF 433

Working against these figures I can't see anything alarming, and bearing in mind the tyres start a 6mm, I have only used 2mm in 5,000 miles.

So, assuming I replace the tyres at 2mm left I should get another 5,000 miles giving total tyre life of circa 10,000 miles.

Thanks to everyone who responded and came down the Kwik fit garden path.

I'd be pretty peeved at only 10,000 miles. I sold my 2004 Elegance 130bhp at 3 years with 34,000 on its original tyres - and it passed the MOT, too.

Dave.

On my Octy One I manage around 10000 on a set of Toyos, thats with 4wd, 350 bhp & fairly "spirited" driving. If I only achieved those figures on a stock car I would be fuming. Our Diesel Octy One is probably around 35-40000 miles on a set.

I have got around 11000 on the clock and my OE Dunlop Sport are hardly showing any signs of wear so I would think you either have a duff wheel set up or a crazy driver.

I would be a bit miffed if I did not get close to 30,000 miles out of my tires, especially as it is my money that replaces them.

I get the distinct feeling that I should really take the corners easier... what's the point of having stiffer suspension and better grip if you don't take adavantage of it. I would have still expected to get 10k from them.

I like the fact the car has lots of torque and being able to go quicker round corners then SWIMBO's 7 Seater is a bonus, but if its going to eat rubber perhaps i should wait for the straights to blast !

Looking at the tyres most of the wear is on the centre 60% which could be over inflation. I have never checked the tyre pressures on a car unless I notice deflation or difference in road handling.

Here's hoping to a tracking problem.

Maybe your third para is the key? Every new car I have bought has had grossly over-inflated tyres - both my Octavias were in the high 40 psi range as received from the dealer. So if you've never checked yours.....

have never checked the tyre pressures on a car unless I notice deflation or difference in road handling.

I'm not sure you would notice the pressure difference at first. I check mine once a week, not to be a good boy but because that is when I discover the bl**dy screw sticking out of it. I set them at 2.2 bar on a proper gauge and if, next time I check, one of them has lost 4 or 5 pounds I know only too well that somewhere there is going to be a puncture. And at that kind of drop the car never feels much different in normal driving.

That's all good points - and thaks again.

I was told that Kwik Fit checked the pressures when I had the rear tyre replaced.

I would have also hoped that Skoda checked the pressures as part of the "once over".

I've ordered a tyre depth gauge and will pop over to a garage and check the pressures.

Cheers

Working against these figures I can't see anything alarming, and bearing in mind the tyres start a 6mm, I have only used 2mm in 5,000 miles.

Sorry if I've missed a bit, but which tyres do you have on now that started at only 6mm? Cut slicks will generallt only give you 5 or 6mm when new, but most road tyres start out with 8mm of tread.

I have P6000s on now cos they were cheap. Not great, but OK - squeal a bit, and a bit more understeery than the OE tyres, but bearable. I wouldn't get them again tho.

I have just had to have one of my rear tyres replaced - see Axle Pair thread - due to a screw being picked and Kwik Fit mentioned that both my front tyres will probably need replacing in about 1,000 miles....

 WHAT

The car has only done 4,600 miles.

It does appear that one edge of a single trye is worn particularly bad and I do seem to spend a lot of time navigating roundabouts - but I have always done the same journey in different cars and never had to do this before.

Anybody else experienced excesive tyre wear on the 2.0 TDI ?

I am taken it back to the supplying dealer Tuesday to have it checked out but I suspect it'll report "no fault found"...

I can't see the lease company paying for 2 tyres every 5,000 miles.

Hi Ray,

I would agree that your wear rate does seem excessive. I would have expected to get 10,000 upwards on OE tyres on an Octy - depending on driving style, model etc.

One point though, I can't see anywhere in the thread mention of what brand/model tyre you have at the moment. Can you tell us? Also when kwik fit changed one of the rear tyres for you, did they do 'like for like' or just chuck on a kwik-fit special?

There is a lot of good general advice running through this thread about wheel alignment, tyre pressures etc but I have to suggest that IMHO if the wear is on the inside edge of the tyre this points to wheel alignment; not just tracking but you have also got camber, caster and set-back to be checked.

If the wear was on the outside of the tyre this could also point to wheeel alignment BUT you ought to then also consider your driving style.

I am a FIRM believer that for best and safest performance of a car you should ALWAYS have ALL four tyres of the same brand/model AND try and keep the tread depth balanced side to side with the deeper tread at the rear.

New tyre - Pirelli P6000 225/45 R 17 91Y

Old tyre - Dunlop SP SPORT 225/45 ZR17 91W.

Two fronts are Dunlop SP SPORT 225/45 ZR17 91W.

Thanks; IMHO the Dunlops are OK but not good and can be a bit firm on the ride and a degree noisy. I guess you have a 16" steelie as a spare so can't bring this into play.

SO - the most effective option for price/safety will be to get 3 new Pirelli P6000. The P6000 is a good overall tyre that should give reasonable grip, with good comfort and good wear rate and IMHO you'll be better off than with the Dunlops. Obviously not really able to make any exotic suggestions as your lease company may not play ball. Price is probably their main decision factor and Pirellis are being heavily discounted at the moment.

OK?
