"Scraping" noise when pulling away

Featured Replies

In a similar manner to the other post mentioning the squeeking of the steering when approaching full lock, I seem to get the following on the fabia vrs:

When starting up and moving off for the first time, I often hear a kind of short scraping kind of noise. It seems to be coming fron the engine / gearbox / front left wheel kind of area.

It only seems to happen (or I only notice it) when the car hasn't been moving for some time. If I stop at the lights and then move away 30 secs later, it doesn't do it. If I park for 1 hour or overnight, it does the next time you start it up.

I don't think it's wheel / direction related. It does it whether turning or in a straight line.

Anyone else come across this ?

If its a light jarring noise, its the ABS self testing. If not then it's about to fall apart, the best thing would be to take flying lessons off of Jason (or take it to someone who knows what they are talking about i.e not me :))

Yeah I've had this in all my VAG cars with ABS it is the self test only occurs approx 15/20 mph.

It should be documented in your handbook.

D

Is it due to rust on the brake discs ?

If it is the ABD system evacuting itself it should happen only once after start up...sounds more like " brrrp or "drrrr".

Should also happen within the first few metres of moving.

My Octy does it every morning when moving off.....kind of like the "first f*rt of the morning. :D

I am getting exactly the same problem as tdboy describes with my new Fabia Comfort 1.4 - a brief, grating, scraping noise which appears to come from front/left of car. I can feel it through the clutch pedal too.

The car has only done 1000 miles and it did this when I first drove it off the forecourt (I got out because I thought I'd caught a kerb or something). It only happens after a period of being stationary, especially overnight - it doesn't do it pulling away at lights/junctions etc. My dealer has so far been unable to identify a cause - if anyone knows what it is I'd be grateful to hear.

It feels definitely like a 'something very wrong' kinda noise, not an intentional self test noise! Im fairly sure it's not related to steering lock, or brakes and there is nothing which appears to be catching underneath the car.

Its the ABS testing itself.. does it when the car first starts and moves a couple of metres. ABS pump is nr the left wheel

Pull off quick like, and you usually get a thump. Dont be worried its normal.

Nothing to worry about folks, perfectly normal as already explained.

I know I like turbo diesel engines, but there is a limit :P
