Has my car been Clocked!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Being the sad man that I am I bought a obd2 eeprom cable to have a play with and now wish I hadn't. When I look at the dash I've done 94k miles, but when I read the dash memory it gives the mileage as 151k! Have I been done? Should I forget it as informing Trading Standards might cause me grief but no one else, or should I trace the *******s down rip their knackers off?

Your thoughts and experiences will be appreciated.

Are you using VAG-COM to check the EDC15 Mileage. Obviously subject to the disclaimer shown when checking I would say it's pretty fair bet that all is not as it seems.

Or alternatively -

94,000 miles = 151,000 Kilometres!!

Of course. :P

Saw the first two posts and thought yes Km, even worked it out on my calculator and imagine my disapointment when I read the rest of the posts.

Is that VAG Tacho that you have got? It is handy for extracting immobiliser PIN numbers, when I tried it has worked every time on a Felicia, though on the 2 Fabias I have tried it on it gives a letter as the second digit.

I have only got the EDC mileage to work once on an Octavia (2001), tried a 2003 Fabia this afternoon and it didn't want to know along with the service reset - ended up setting the channels manually.

I've done a couple of mileage checks on both Octy and Fabia but it didn't work on a Passat I tried on Saturday.

Yes it is. Thanks for all your help; saves me making a prat of myself:(.

On all VW/SKODA & Audi the mileage is only stored in either an eeprom or within the micro on the dash and once written will only show the new mileage. There is no other place where this is stored.

Hope this helps

I hope you don't 'clock' VAG cars for a living then mate -

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM Tour: Applications

[EDC-15 Mileage] On some (but by no means all) TDI ECUs, VAG-COM can show an independent "odometer" reading stored in the ECU. This can useful as a means of cross-checking the mileage on used car at time of purchase, particularly in Europe where odometer fraud is rampant. We plan to extend this functionality to as many ECUs as practical in the future.

Stu,

That's the bit I read and assumed I was seeing the true mileage I wonder if mine has the independent mileage some where.

No i dont but i know an awful lot about the technology behind it, The only cars i am aware of that use the ECU as another storage area are BMW,Peugeot,Merc'sand Porsche.

The Beamers keep it in the key don't they. Drop your keys on the service desk and you are checked and ready for a service.

Yes and no, they keep it there but the value in the key is not "real" - there are more places than the key and once the other ones have been changed the key automatically changes too. Of course, this is no general rule - but that's how it works in some of the models.

BTW: VW/Audi also store the mileage in more than one control module...

Add Smart to the above list, mileage is kept in several places on the city coupe models.
