Will the coilpack problem ever be fully sorted?

Featured Replies

I had a coilpack go last night, I knew what it was straight away having experienced it a couple of times before, this set has been in at least a couple of years but it's still a pain when they go. Luckily I had a spare so it was only a minor inconvenience. My car is currently on revision J coil packs, are the newer revisions more reliable? I'm gonna order another spare anyway to put back in the boot.

What problems occur from the coil pack going ?

What problems occur from the coil pack going ?

The engine misfires.

A n00b question now, what does that feel like when a car misfires, Ive never experienced it ?

Only reason i ask it that on a cold morning start my car shudders a bit until i touch the go pedal or it warms up. This could be just cause its cold though.

A member recently had an R version fitted, and mine are the L version - so that's 2 revisons since yours.

There's hope yet then! I had J's fitted about a month after getting my Octavia, this is the 2nd one to go from that set, my spares were also J's. I'll make sure I get the latest revision when I buy another spare.

The car feels very juddery, way down on power and usually the check engine lights flashes on the dash. The car also sounds noticably different.

Im good then, but thanks. At least i know the symtoms now if it occurs.

One of mine went in the new year, now got 4 new 'L' revisions on there...

Out of interest and sheer curiousity, what's the replacement cost of these? Certainly still seems to be an ongoing issue? I wonder why VAG haven't been able to sort the issue, even after all these revisions?

Steve

About £30 a pop IIRC.

They're free as a "gesture of goodwill" until your car's out of warranty I believe if they are the faulty revision.

I booted my car and thought I'd broken it - went all diesel-like and wouldn't go over 30 - plus engine management light was on.

£35 from my VW stealer.

I expect it to do with the extreme heat they operate under :)

Can they just be DIY fitted, or is it a dealer job? Seems a bit of hassle all round!

Steve

I dont think its no where near as bad as it used to be though is it.

Plus its not like your car is standard now is it Eddy :D

Steve

2 or 3 are easily accessible but the 4th requires a few bolts undoing. Easy job really.

DIY. I have posted a pictorial guide to what is involved in the Technical Guides forum here.

Try changing the order of the coil-to-cylinders, this tactic recently got rid of my 3k+ flat spots, seriously (this assumes that the coils are in some form of decent function). I had a 17608 n249/boost leak DTC cleared down, changed MAF (unecessary), cleaned throttle body, rebuilt Bailey dv30 (dv good start for 17608), changed sparks (NGK BKR7E) before finally swapping the coil order (4-to-1 only), which solved it!

I'm about to put togther a post which also points out that Bremi-coils (bracket-less) can lift/pop-out. A couple of guys on the US forums have fabricated said brackets. To prove a point, the TT 225 uses bolt-down coil packs, do a google for Beru and Hitachi 'E' revision coil packs (ECSTuning in the states has the latter).

Mine does that sometimes as well, but I've only noticed it since fitting the Carbonio.

Thats hit the nail on the head. It has only happened since fitting the Carbonio to.

Coil pack probs arnt only on VAG cars, i work at a bmw dealer and i cant believe how many we sell! bremi seem to be the problem ones and bmw replace them with bosch or era coils

I had a coil pack go on Thurday - I had no spare and was miles from home.

Decided to get the train home to be safe.

Friday, put in a new pack in number 4 cylinder and off I went! .......... for about 10 miles when number two cylinder went.

Being a canny chap having looked on here on the Thursday night, I had purchased a spare as well. (Not from a dealer I might add - needs must)

Off I went again for about 20 miles - number two cylinder coil pack gone again!!

I was now getting ready to kick my poor old Octy, here I was again 8 miles from home & no spare coil pack at 6pm. (Arghhh!!!!)

Decided to unplug no.2 cylinder injector and coil pack and drive very slowly home. Got a spare from a mate - started to get misfiring when the right foot got heavy. Ran fine with small throttle movements.

This morning I decided to replace all the coil packs with the latest revision from Skoda. What a difference - my Octy is more responsive then before I had any coil pack issues! They must have been degrading over time.

Can't tell what revision the old ones are as the part numbers are not visable. I am now going to carry all my old semi working packs as a get me home.

Hmm your story is tempting me to replace my coils before my 2500mile drive next week. Or at least carry some spares. I've never had a coil go, yet, but it sounds annoying, and sods law always prevails....

GSF are quoting

I had to have 2 coilpacks on my 2.0TFSI vRS. So the problems not been sorted yet :(
