Very nice - the blue certainly looks the biz...mine hopefully arrives next week.

Just out of interest, are the wheels the 17's or 18's?

the wheels are 17's (means you go faster when you floor it:thumbup: )

I take it climate control is not standard on the mk2 vRS ?

Very nice:thumbup:

Thats strange as it is here in Ireland and we usually get poor standard kit.

All UK Octavia have "Climatic air conditioning with automatic regulation", which is what Mater's car has (as photo'd)..

There is an option of "Climatronic Dual Zone air conditioning (with jumbo box and rear electric windows) available on vRS and other models. This is the fully auto thermostatically controlled version.

It has Climatic as standard but not Dual Zone Climatronic, that's part of the Jumbo Pack.

Edit - Bugger beaten to it again!!

WHY?

Gearing is no different 17s to 18s (225/45 17 vs. 225/40 18) with the rolling radius of the 18s being larger by ONLY 0.46%!

Unsprung weight? 18s heavier? by 0.5kg per wheel perhaps.

But overall with 200bhp under your right foot surely there is no measurable difference. An extra 50kg with a full tank of fuel will make more difference!!

Or is it just the mind set?

Sorry Stu!!! Hey - I get my FSDs on Friday :D

Nice looking car. Now move the sat nav to the right :)

AM or PM?? Might be able to pop over and mug Kate for a coffee and a chat if it's in the afternoon.

Sorry, morning; I'll be there and waiting for when Kate gets there and opens @ 8:30am. Will be hanging around until 11:00am but then going off into P'mouth to meet up with my son. Hoping to be away by 1:00pm 'cos got to get away and round the M25 before the usual Friday night gridlock!

Whats that hanging from the windscreen ?

Without getting all technical

Basically my dad works with Aerodynamics etc for Fords. He calculated that with 18's the length of the gearing would increase by 0.04% or in terms that we would understand 0.15 of a second slower to 62 and 2.72mph less at top end. This was taking into account the extra weight and the extra overall diameter. The reverse is also true so if i put 13's on it and stick some low profile 35 tyres (this is theoretical mind) you would get an increase of 0.8 of a second and 5.23mph on the top end

Anyway i was only being sarcastic when i said it as i know an inch dosent make that much of a difference (that's what i tell the wife anyway:rofl:  )

Carl

Edit: there are two things one is the bracket for my tomtom (cant stand it being on the right means the charging wire gets in the way of the Speedo)

and the other thing is an air freshener

But surely, rotational velocity increases as the radius increases (ie. it gets faster the further out you go), therefore the bigger the wheels, the faster you'd go, assuming weight wasn't a factor and the tyre profile stayed the same.

Realistically, though, since the tyre profile is reduced to more or less the same diameter, whether running on 17s or 18s, rotational velocity wouldn't change. Therefore, the only factor is weight. Since the 18s have more alloy, you'd think they'd be considerably heavier. However, there's less rubber and air, so I think the weight gain due to more alloy would be offset by the reduction in weight due to less rubber and air.

So, there wouldn't really be any difference in speed at all

The rotatinal velocity would change as an 18 inch wheel is in total 21.5 inches in diameter including the tyre i.e 18 plus 80mm (because its diameter so obviously the tyre goes all the way round hence the 40mm is doubled from the 225/40) Whereas a 17 inch wheel is 20.5 inches wide. i.e 17 plus 90mm. Remeber an inch is 25.47mm

Therefore the gearbox and engine have to do slightly more work to complete one full turn of an 18 inch wheel over a 17 inch wheel due to the extra inch in diameter. Therefore you get a reduction in acceleration and top end speed. Now cos the gear ratio has been lengthend in theory on a long enough road then you could cancel out the top end speed and go slightly faster but your looking at a perfectly flat road being about 5 miles in length or more. Whereas top speed of a car when tetsing (well this is for fords anyway) is the speed the car reaches from a standing start to however fast it is going at 3.5 miles. Manufacturers usually underestimate this by 5mph

Anyway thats enough of being technical as i said it was only me being sarcastic as i knew the difference was negligible and couldnt be felt by anything other than a computer.

Could explain why F1 cars don't run particularly low profile wheels and tyres!.

Bahnstormer: I may well pop and see you at JKM's on Friday, it's my second home ;)

What an intresting thread, dozed of a little in the middle :P , but now i remember why i looked in the first place lol  .......nice car m8! very jealous, cant wait for mine to arrive!

How long have we all got to debate this subject; if we take long enough about it, I bet someone could write a 10,000 word thesis. :D

Mater; yeah - your right and I have to support your argument. :thumbup: I had to fit 195/45 tyres and not 205/45 tyres on the 16s fitted to my Fabia to get the gearing right with the OE 185/60 14s (its a 1.4mpi), with the 205s I could feel the performance being blunted particularly with only 68bhp;

BUT are we all going to loose sleep over 0.4% or 0.46% difference? Hell no! I lost enough sleep last night and have "no more sleeps to go" as I collect my vRS TDI this afternoon :D:cool: . Complete with B14 style 18s !!!!!! :D:cool::D

That'll be good. Will be nice to put a face to the name!

Very envious...hopefully get mine next week.

Just going back to the 17/18 debate... ...won't the rolling diameter of the 17's and 18's be the same? Although the wheel is bigger, it will have a lower profile tyre, and therefore they are in real world terms the same diameter? Thought that was how it worked, but may be wrong!

Enjoy your car mate but remember if you pull up next to another vRS TDI make sure he has 18's on aswell or he'll beat you:P :P

Seriously enjoy im still walking round like this:D :D :D

Nearly right; 225/45 17 vs. 225/40 18 has a 0.46% difference with the 18 being the larger (figure from Briskoda tyre calculator).

This is a very close match and in the 'real world' will make no difference on the car.

Read further up robbie but in essence no an 18 inch wheel is still approx an inch bigger in overall diameter

unless you fit 225/25 tyes:eek:  :P but i dont think they have made them yet:rolleyes: would look good tho. might suggest it to all the major tyre manufacturers

edit: damn beaten to the punch

Carl

Don't think I ever will; I last saw a vRS about two months ago. They seem to be rare in Herts/NW London.

Besides; It ain't what you drive its the WAY that you DRIVE IT. I often beat up many a more powerful car even though I've only had a 1.4mpi to date!! :D
