Heater blower resistor

Featured Replies

I think you are right to be careful however in my experiance some prices are actually surprisingly cheap.

It's lunacy to not at least phone up and ask the question before you spend time scouring the internet looking for somthing which might not be available outside of the network.

I seem to recall a post where somone gave details on repairing the unit yourself, you may wish to try the search.

Will do, thanks!

My fan speed control has been duff for some time. Before reading here, big mistake :( I took the front casing off, cracking the plastic light spreader in the process? which lights the temp settings. The idea was to remove the copper contact selector mech to clean it and it was covered in grease. Its held in by 6 clips! for some STUPID reason requiring major surgery with jewelers screwdrivers. After cracking one of these, and two hours later I had no success and so will try the advice above re resistors.

IS it me or is every plastic clip on the car mega brittle. Snapped a battery cover clip - an internal headlight cover clip - and 2 in the dash! Love the car, but plastics are over engineered, and made from Bakelite. Getting a hairdryer out to warm them clips up next time.

Buy new from your dealer and fit yourself using the guide on here

For the cost it would be cheaper than sourcing it at a scrappy and the work to remove it

Or get a price from a motor factor VW is the same part PART No 6Q0 959 263A

These instructions are good. But I still failed to get the resistor out :( (I have some pics of where I was looking - I'll post them up in a minute). Fortunately I managed to put it all back together and connect everything up (at the second time of asking), with only a couple of small scratches on the surface of the glovebox.

Given I've failed, but I have the resistor pack, do you guys think I'm better off taking it to a Skoda dealer, or my friendly local garage? It's due a service in the next month or so, and I was just going to go to the local place, but if the Skoda guys will be able to do this faster (and thus at the same cost or cheaper) than my local garage, maybe I should go there? What do you reckon?

Cheers

Duncan

And thanks from me too! My wife came home last week rather upset to report that her Fabia VRs heater fan would only work on position 4. I thought it might have been the switch, but a quick search on here and I found your post. Ordered the part from the dealer, and we fitted it this morning. I did all the glovebox removal stuff, then got stuck at accessing the resistor pack. Didn't need to remove the fan: I suggested Mrs W use her slender hand (they are both slender, they aren't different sizes) to twist out the resistor pack and fit the new one. She found it easier to remove it leaving the wires attached. She is now very happy! (And so am I)

Just fitted a new heater blower resistor and without reading your posting of how to do it and where it was I would never have known where to start.

The posting you put on the site was excellent and accurate.

Thanks for the posting of info. - Paul N

Great guide thanks.

I removed the fan but not sure it gave me any more room.

I now have the resistor pack extracted..

The protective potting compound has cracked and flaked to reveal a break in the resistor wire.

Interestingly enough there is a VW, SEAT, Audi and Skoda emblem on the original

plastic resistor base.

When ordering at the Skoda dealer they wanted to know the year of manufacture, so beware if sourcing from scrappers.

Now where is that second skin spray?

Thanks again national!

Down to your original post another modestly skilled DIYer managed to do the job in pretty quick time!

Panicked a little initially as with glove box removed still took a minute or two to locate the resistor pack! For anyone else doing the job-look immediately to the right of the rubber hose that connects to the glove box and there it is! Push the rubber hose right back out of the way and with a little twist and a lift the resistor pack comes out of where it sits-I kept the connector ON until it was clear.

I got the new part from Rainworth Skoda-

I have a similar problem..... BUT.... having replaced the resistor pack..... it is still there.

My problem is, when I switch on the heater blower.... (no matter what position)... it runs for about 20 seconds before "dying", as if connected to a duff battery.... (like a bulb losing brightness).... it slows down, and then stops.... there is a "rough clicking" noise coming from the fan motor as is eventually dies , but is not present when the fan is runn for the 20 secs, If I leave it for about 5 minutes, I can repeat the 20 second blow !.... (not very good for keeping the screen clear !...

I have removed the pollen filter from the heater unit (access under the glove box)....the fan has a nice bit of power behind it now ! on full blast. !

Anyone got any ideas?

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT.....

Problem SOLVED !....

Replaced the Resistor Pack. £35.00 ........ no change

Replaced the Controld Panel (interior) £35.00 (Scrapyard)........ no change

Replaced the Fan unit £35.00 (scrapyard)....... Now working OK..... left out the pollen filter to get more power in the "blow"!

Ha Ha Ha !.... why didn`t I replace the fan first...... well, I got the fan out, cos I suspected it..... and rigged up a couple of wires to put on the battery terminals...... fan worked brilliantly,... did this a couple of times.... and let it run to make sure it was really working.. before refitting it...

after refitting the new control panel (what a fiddly job that was).... the fan did exactly the same as before..... ran for a few seconds then died..... so unscrewed it and moved it "slightly" out of alignment from proper postion. then switched it on....... it worked fine..... I could get the fan to run in any position EXCEPT it`s proper working position, so assume that the bearings on the fan had worn down due to gravity, and so eventually replaced the fan......

It would appear mine has just gone :( - either I drive around in a mobile hairdryer or no blower at all!

I don't trust myself with anything practical so I'll have to bite the bullet and go to Henry's Skoda in Glasgow (although first up I'll chance my arm with my (non Skoda) warranty - however, it would appear to cover electrical motors but not wires, terminals, fuses, bulbs and all other electrical components with the exception of the alternator and central locking).

Edited to add: Henry's have just quoted £131 for labour inc. VAT :o - say the job can take up to two hours - looks like I'll be doing it myself!

Sorted at a local garage for £65 including the resistor  - not as cheap as doing it myself but certainly a lot cheaper than the £170 Henry's quoted (including resistor) :o . I was going to take it to Henry's for servicing but now thinking twice - anyone recommend a good VAG independent in the Glasgow area?

Thanks to all those who contributed to this excellent thread. I've just changed my resistor (Skoda Fabia 2005). I would suggest that you remove the glove compartment – it really is easy to do this. The resistor is in a very awkward place and you need as much space as possible.

I found the trickiest part was re-fitting the new resistor. It’s in a housing and very fiddly to get back in. After a lot of time fiddling about I found that refitting the wiring connector before putting the resistor back in to be the best option.

Don’t give up – this job is very ‘doable’ albeit frustrating at times due to the location of the resistor/housing/connector!

The plastic used is not Bakelite. Bakelite is made from Paper and Resin, I used to work many years ago in a Paper Mill which made the Paper in various colours, when Formica was used for table tops etc.

Thank you very much for your help, this site is excellent, I am still getting the hang of trying to reply etc as may be obvious. your help is much appreciated
