I already knew about the engine/turbo pressure drop which I am going to call the dealership about and mention the code explanation off of here (17705 P1297 Connection turbocharger - throttle valve pressure hose) but was wondering if anyone knew what the air conditioning codes are and also the radio error message? The aircon has been an issue ever since I bought the car from a Skoda dealership but its never been fixed, only regassed and checked for leaks which the dealership said 'was fine' however the regas only ever seems to last a couple of months before it stops working again and now think the above codes maybe why.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give :)

I have the V71 fault on my car.

This is cause by the flap motor sticking, I get this once / twice a month. where i get hot air only throught the aircon. This is expensive to get sorted as its a big labour job, whole dash has to be removed. Until its permanent hot air that i cant get rid of, im going just ignore it.

Turning off the engine and leaving it for a bit ussually sorts it for me.

Maybe it stuck once or twice without you knowing. Showing the fault code.

Thank you for that info. I do get 'cool' air out just not cold air that I would expect from air con. Its definately not stuck on hot so hopefully I can get that code cleared and see if it comes back.

I'd like to know what the 00792 - A/C Pressure Switch (F129) issue is though incase that has anything to do with it not being as cold as it should be.

I think there is a man who frequents this arena that can change those without taking the dash out - he may well pop up later.

Im keeping my eye out for him.

If you listen behind the central vents without the engine on but the ignition on 2, i hear a clicking noise, which i take is the flap trying to open / close.

You can reset the flap motor via a vag com, searching will give you the info.

If this doesnt help then a new flap motor may be needed. But there is a another way i have also read on hear, that you can open the flap IIRC and disconnect the flap motor power.

Thats great cheers. I haven't done anything with the software apart from the autoscan so I think I need to sit down and read the pdfs on how to use it.

Well my local Skoda dealership is a fat load of use, ******* said they wont tell me anything to do with the codes or how much it will be to fix as they will only go on their own diagnostics which will cost

  • Author

Gave Impossible Performance a call and I can take the print out and have a look at what needs fixing :) The 17705 is most likely the dump valve leaking or a split in the hose so an easy fix :) The dealership can take a running jump from now on as they are a bunch of thieving gits.

Well my local Skoda dealership is a fat load of use, ******* said they wont tell me anything to do with the codes or how much it will be to fix as they will only go on their own diagnostics which will cost £32.50 before they even start fixing anything. They can go poke it up their ar$e

I think they've taken a perfectly acceptable approach. If you handed them a bit of paper with codes on and they said you needed to spend, £300 for instance, to fix it and you did and it didn't you'd be hopping mad and asking them why the feck they got it so wrong.

Conversely you could let them look at it for £32.50 (Which I presume is a half hours labour and the standard rate for a diag check) and they could say you need to do this that and the other, cost you £50 and you'd be happy with their diagnosis.

What you wanted was free advice along with a cheap fix and you didn't get it.

No what I object to is payng £32.50 to plug their laptop in and tell me the same thing my laptop is already telling me or are you saying vag-com isn't reliable?

Why do people bother having vag-com if they still have to pay a dealership to plug a laptop in to get a fix? The dealership just wants money for old rope and it certainly doesn't take 30 mins to run a diag, more like 5 minutes. They are not getting my money and I will take it to somewhere is happy to take a vag-com report to say whats wrong.

No what I object to is payng

Well I called the place I mentioned above and they are happy to go on my diagnostic check and already said the code I gave them was normally a simple fix, well what I said above really.

My local dealership are too big for their own boots and nothing like the dealership where I bought the car from (which is too far to travel to unfortunately for work to be done). Its no wonder people want to use smaller garages when dealerships are such a rip off because i'm sorry but £32.50 to plug a computer into your car is a rip off no matter how you describe whats invovled especially when I can give them the diagnostic codes.

I'd rather give my money to somewhere like Impossible Performance who have been very helpful the couple of times I have phoned them than give my money to a dealership who treat you like sh!t.

Perhaps your dealership is far better than mine and thats why you feel it would be justified to pay them the money but I don't like my local dealership one little bit and wouldn't trust anything they say which is why I wanted VAG-COM in the first place, so I could see for myself what was being reported.

You are still missing the point though mate. They are a business and not a charity, it sounds to me as though you wanted to rock up at the service desk, drop your print out on the desk and have the techie come out and tell you how to fix your car. How would they stay in business at that rate?

Why wouldn't you feel it justified to pay them £32.50 to take a look at your car? Surely when you go to work you expect to get paid for what you do.

You not liking or trusting the local dealership is a different story, here we are discussing why you would be charged for a diagnostic check.

As I said before they don't simply "plug their laptop in", they have a very expensive diagnostic computer costing many thousands of pounds and it has to earn it's money and hence the, what I think is a , reasonable charge is levied. I've been told it costs circa £20k to train a Master Tech.

I would want to be paid for looking at it, so a job card gets raised and if its retail that means a charge.

And although i'd perhaps keep the print out in mind it wouldnt treat it a gospel.

That is not the case at all, I cannot fix my car even if they did tell me what parts needed fixing. I want them to tell me from the print out what they would charge to fix those errors, nothing more complicated than that but they refuse to. Not charge me £32.50 to tell me the errors and then how much it will be to fix them.

The issue is with the 17705 fault is that there isnt one cause of that fault.

The fault code itself is pretty much useless without diagnosis, this is what you pay for. If you like I suppose they could change the DV, the vacuum hoses under the manifold, the throttle body, the air temp sensor, the air mass meter and a few other components that cause that fault. Changing them all would probably find the faulty one.

You are still missing the point, any other car I have had I take to a garage and say right this isn't right or that isn't right and they take the car in look at it and fix it and call you when they find out what the problem is to tell you how much it will be. Skoda is the first company I have ever come across that want to charge you £32.50 for a quote on fixing your car! Never has any other garage on any car I have owned charged me for a quote.

I think you are missing the point. They have given you a quote, £32.50 to tell you what is wrong with your car.

The reason most dealers charge for diagnosis is if you dont there is nothing to stop you going into a dealer, asking them to plug the machine in and tell you what whats wrong, then you bugger off and fit the part yourself leaving the dealer out of pocket.

  • Author

I can understand that point of view, but how about then that customers who then have the work done at the dealership get the quote cost knocked off the final bill. If I go to any company for any type of work I don't expect to get billed for a quote of what I want done. Skoda are the first.

Go to the dentist with tooth ache.

You get a charge for an inspection to find out why your tooth hurts, then you will get charged for the filling.

No different.

Out of warranty I've always had to pay for the garages to look at my motors to diagnose the problem or verify my suspitions. If i have the work done there, they usually waiver it.

Anything showing as intermittent is not really worth trying to fix because how do you know that you have fixed it?, just clear the codes and see if they return, with the flap motor you could try resetting it, with the radio - maybe the car has had a flat battery at some point. The 17705 could be caused by anything how do you quote for that based on a fault code? The only real fault in my opinion is the AC pressure switch, on the face of it that could be faulty, or there could be a leak in the system, did they use a green dye that leaves a residue when they re-gassed it?- what do you quote for? a new switch, condensor, compressor, pipework etc. Diagnosis is a combination of fault codes, skill, knowledge, experience and knowing the circumstances under which the fault has occurred, not bad value for

Here are 2 references which will give you an idea of what is involved in diagnosing faults in a VAG air conditioning system. The second specifically mentions how to test an F129 switch. As you can see the dealer's diagnostic equipment has far more capabilities than VAG-COM - but the dealer has to pay for that equipment in the first place hence the need to charge for its use. Your dealer didn't find a leak and the private company didn't either, so why do you still think there is a leak?
