Did you go for that one? :)

Try warehouseexpress.com for the best prices around, suggest you go down to jessops to handle the cameras. but don't listern to a word they have to say, its all crap basicaly.

Eos 400d is a nice toy but thats all it is, Nikon D40 again not much better, there is a D40X with a 10.2 MP sensor. Ok for one forget about the camera, the most important thing is the quality of the Glass. Therefore I think that Nikon Lenses just pip Canon's on quality. That in mind if you have got a little more cash to spend, the D80 is a good place to start. If you are feeling a little flush this month then the D200 is a very nice piece of kit, costing at the moment around

Speaking as a pro (photographer)!!

Go for the Canon, as you are buying into a wider range of add-ons, plus the auto focus is better than Nikon. This is because the EOS design was brand new, no compromise, whereas Nikon compromised to enable manual users to switch over gradually.

Canon with 18 - 55 currently

Not too sure I agree about forgetting the camers. Feel, fit and use are key to the pleasure of using a camera, good glass becomes more critical as you print bigger. IMO the best way to go for a basic kit at the moment would be any of the available DSLRs and a Sigma 18-50EX DC. I have had one of these, and whatever the various brand officianados tote as being "good glass" this one far surpasses any basic kit lens and at around

i love my canon 400D to bits

I find Canon easier to use, quieter, better image quality and simply pwnes (as the kids say) Nikon in low light where 90% of my shooting occurs. I love my 350d and I's recommend Canon over Nikon every time.

But as people have said, think what you're using it for, and if possible borrow/steal some to actually use it and get a feel for it. I used a 300d at work for a while before buying my 350d and the difference in feel (and size) is immense! The 300 feels horrible, but the 350 is perfect and the smaller size is no problem for my short stubby fingers.

Thanks Mort :)

Off to buy one :)

this is *still* something I'm looking into lol

I've found that the 400D/D40 etc are all too small for me to comfortably use. have been looking a lot at the Nikon D80....

You must have the hands of a giant if a D40 is too small! Can't go wrong with a D80 though

It's a tricky time when you're deciding which set up to go for. there are so many differing opinions and reviews contradicting each other. I suppose the best advice is from either professional photographers or committed amateurs, and it will depend on what you're going to use the camera for.

I was initially considering a Sony Alpha DSLR as I've always been pleased with other Sony produce, however I was swayed by talking to different photographers who mostly recommended Canon, again due to the lenses and accessories.

I struggle with fiddly cameras and wanted to make sure that the hardware wouldn't go out of date too fast so decided upon a Canon 40D with 17-85 IS lens. It's a bit daunting initially to get your head round all the technical knowledge but I'm slowly getting there. just waiting for some good weather to put the theory into practice.

(taken with N95 BTW)

My current DSLR problem is that Sony have launched the Alpha 700 and I have a bag full of high quality Minolta A mount lenses that will suit it perfectly. Unfortunately I do not have a bag full of money at the moment. Just started saving for a supercharger:cool:

Chris

the reason why I'm interested in the Pentax is that I already have a Pentax film SLR, and a couple of lenses, so they would pop on the K10 no problem.

Chris, if you're seriously after an alpha, I might be able to help :)

I have recently bought the 400d with the 18-55mm lens as im working overseas at the moment, so i claimed my tax back off amazon and also canon are doing cashback on the eos range at the moment, so it was rude not to. Having used it a couple of times, i have found it really easy to use, even though i know very little about cameras. The lens that i bought is ok, but i would like to get a lens with a bit better range, is there a good all-rounder that anyone could recommend to me?

Take a look at the 17-85 IS Canon. I've got one, and it's a nice lense, and it's an ultrasonic device, so the AF motor is much quieter.

It weighs about 5 times more than the kit lense, though!

If you are looking for a D-SLR have a look at this site. It does a comparison of most of the cheapest in UK.

Camera Price Buster - UKs cheapest camera gear

This is a pretty old thread - revitalised. There are some great deals out there right now and both canon, Nikon, Olympus etc. are doing cashback offers.

I personally don't think there are any real bad D-SLR's out there now and there are plenty to choose from.

I personally chose Canon as they have the largest range of lenses if I decided to upgrade, which can have it's advantages and disadvantages (especially on the wallet) see below

having looked around again, it seems that the D80 will still be a good buy for me :)

(unless something comes out better in the price range!)

Here are some reviews of the Nikon D80. There are some nice comparison shots for noise and detail on P18+ & P22+ with the 400D

Another camera worth considering is the recently discontinued Canon 30D which can be had for
