Diagnose my clunking...

Featured Replies

I've got a clunking coming from my vRS. Its only occurs when I pull off from rest, and is coming from the front nearside. If I pull off gently there is no noise, but normal driving gets it clunking, its like a little thump sound. I thought it might be the CV, but the car is fine going round and round in circles. Before I put it to garage, anyone care to have a guess whats up.

does it do it if you go on/come off the throttle enthusiastically??

my money is on the wishbone bush will have split... maybe something to do with enthusiastic launches at the 'pod ;)

you can see the bush by just looking under the car just below the front of the passenger door :)

I'd be checking the driveshaft nut is tight.

And the answer was........

The rear suspension!!!

The noise was being made by the rear suspension, then travelling through the chassis, and being heard as a clunk from the front nearside. God knows how though. My dealer had a new technician in the workshop who diagnosed it, and then said that when working at VW this problem was subject of recall on Polo's.

I asked if they were certain, and yes they had inspected everything at the front of the car and it was all tight, checked all the suspension bushes, and road tested the car 3 times with two technicians in the car agreeing the noise is caused by the rear suspension.

I've got the same problem... Was it fixed under warranty? What was the fix?

Its being repaired next Saturday, So I'll let you know what happens.

interesting, when my arb bushes and droplinks were clunking, I could have sworn the noise was coming from the rear...................................

And the answer wasn't the rear suspension.........

I now have nice new rear suspension top mounts and a clunk.

The dealer is having the car back for two days next week to get to the bottom of it. The suspension and mounts are all OK, the clutch is fine too, I'm thinking gearbox/drivetrain, but not the CV joints as they were all checked. Anyway that's for the dealer to diagnose.

i vote for the gearbox mount or clutch pipe

Have a quick search for a post regarding the upper gearbox mount that ric mentions. It was subject to a TSB, I posted some pictures in the thread if you find it.

I also have the same "clunk" and look forward to hearing what the fix was (so I can guide the dealer accordingly!).

Mine appeared a short while after the annual service - when did yours appear?

About a week after I had an oil service and the brake fluid replaced.

Interesting, same here.

Any news on the resolution to your clunking yet?

Well after having the car for 2 full days to do with as they see fit, the dealer came up with a big fat zero..............

They can hear the noise, but they don't know what's causing it. Their answer which made me smile, 'wait for it to get louder and we'll try to find what's wrong again'................I replied that I might as well wait for it to break first.

So all in all a crap performance by the dealer. Still at least the symptom has been noted. I just hope whatever it is fails whilst I still have a warranty.

Id be checking the engine stabiliser mount (dogbone mount), then the control arm bushes, then the top gearbox mount,

also get them to look at the top on the nearside front spring and see if it has been catching on the innerwing reinforcement. this is what happend to mine, see below pic.

ive got this problem too.ive been to the dealer with it 3 times and they still can not find it so i just give it a few more revs before i let the clutch go,about 1200 rpm.My car is 06 reg and only done 18,000 miles. ive had so many things do wrong with the so far.

My TDI used to make a single 'clunk' from under the bonnet as I pulled away from stop but this ceased when I had the engine mounts replaced.

I was interested to read the comments here as my Fabia Comfort 1.4 (03 Reg) has also developed a weird clunking noise mostly when decelerating in the lower gears. I'm hoping it's got nothing to do with the clutch (surely it can't be? It's only done 21,000 miles and only had one careful lady owner before I bought it last October).

About two weeks prior to this the dreaded electronic management light also came on so have booked the car in tomorrow for a diagnostic. Really unimpressed with the number of problems I have had with this car and getting increasingly frustrated at shelling out for the diagnostics (and work - I have no warranty).

Anyway, that's my whinge...for now! :)
