Did I deserve a headlight flashing?

Featured Replies

:D OK, I can be a child sometimes, but this was this evening's scenario.

About 8.30, getting dark, heading home from golf... There's a nice long stretch of dead straight road a good 2/3 mile long - very tempting obviously. ;) Come up behind a 4x4 doing somewhere between 60 and 65 along this straight bit. So, as I wanted to get home for some tea, I engaged 4th gear and performed what was in my mind a safe overtaking manouvere - indication, early pulling out and late in (nothing at all coming the other way). Greeted by a blinding main beam from said 4x4. Of course, I was out of sight soon enough, but was that really something I deserved? Maybe it was the noise my car was making? I know it wasn't the smoke as I was making sure it was enough juice to make progress, not enough to leave a smoke trail.

I have a feeling the person tried to accelerate at the same time too, but that was absolutely useless :D;)

This sort of behaviour gets on my tits. Being a child, I find it most fulfilling to slow right down (thats what they wanted me to do right ;) ) for a good few miles. 20mph works well, with blips of the throttle when they pull out to overtake! :P

I was too hungry for any of that. I made record time back home from Exeter. :D and that was with slowing for the two 30 limits as well. I was at the end of that 2/3 mile straight with the truck a good 300 yards behind me still (main beam still on! )

I love my car sometimes - the only time I seem to be able to use the performance to the full is when exceeding the NSL. :o

Probably just letting you know that he was was going at or slightly above the speed limit and you exceeded that to overtake him, therefore you are an .... I really wouldn't worry about it :D

Cheers Chris.

I deliberately did not elude to the speed I was doing, but obviously a safe overtaking manouvere in my opinion involves the minimum amount of time spent in the proximity of the person being overtaken. I was not in it's vicinity for very long at all.

Its the other guy trying to prove a point. Pathetic.

Did you have your lights on? If not, he was just probably surprised to see you go past him all of a sudden. Of course, if you weren't gaining on him at silly speeds, he should have seen you anyway as one should periodically look up at their mirror to see if anyone's behind. :P

edit: of course it wasn't your smoke. If it was, you wouldn't have seen the flashing of said 4x4 in the first place :D

your in the right m8. you should of gave him the bird. :finger: politely of course. :D

if sombody had used thier full beams on me, i'd make a point of stopping them and asking them what they want

An ars$wipe, obviously. I had an experience about a year ago when I got stuck behind an X5 and a Rage Rover on the A84 (not a road allowing for passing). Eventually the X5 passed the RR. I then passed both :D:D

They were both severely unchuffed :rofl::rofl:

I was parked up, ordering my pizzas, several minutes later when they both passed :finger::finger::finger::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Not called Jeremy Klaxon are you ?

Seriously, some idiots flash because you had the damned audacity to overtake their xxx pride and joy

How dare you..........

There could be other reasons

1: He thought he knew you.

2: He thought you cut in a bit too close

3: He just wanted to have a better look at your car and felt that illuminating it would show it to its best advantage :D

Still sounds like a bit of an a*se though :)

Should have slowed down so they were right on the back bumper and then turned on that 30-million-candlepower nautical strobelight you have on the rear parcelshelf for such situations.

Unless that's just me.

Unless they had full beam on before you overtook, and were too dumb to turn it off once in front of them. This might explain why it was on so long after the overtaking manoevre?

Or, am I just being too nice, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and they are as usual a complete and arrogant tit driving an oversized, underpowered tractor?

Either way, you were right. Skoda drivers always are....:D

" Hi.......Arn't you the Kray Twins.....Why did your have your Main beam on" .......Yer right...

I've had this whilst driving perfectly, as the driving manual states (within the speed limits, ect) but with my roof sign on... people just seem to get upset when overtaken by a learner car!

once, I was on a lesson, in a 20mph zone, and had my pupil duly sticking to the 20 limit, and had a 4*4 come up fast behing me flashing his lights constantly and getting on his horn!!! it wasn't a genuine emergancy (dying person on way to hospital for example) because he could have easily over took me... we hadn't met this car earlier either.... he was just a d**k... the worlds full of them, I just accept that now... I wouldn't worry about it Jase....

what in devon?? it was probably just a pair of farmers:D

Depends.

If it was an old Landrover/Discovery/Shogun then probaly was, if it was an X5/X-trail/Frontera then it was an a*se :D

The mud is usually a dead giveaway ;)

Strange thing, but I see less 4x4's here in deepest rural Devon than I did when I lived in Oxfordshire. Weird huh ?

they are prob just jealous cos you got a faster car, theres loads o arseholes like that on the road!

If I may play devils advocate... ding, ding, d-d-ding, ding

:holmes:

Maybe he was trying to warn you of a speed trap further along the road,

Maybe he was trying to warn you about wildlife jumping out of a hedge,

Or maybe the driver didn't like to be around other drivers with no regard for the speed limit?

You broke the speed limit, he put his lights on full beam, what's the problem?

Actually, another point is are you sure he was on main beam, as some of the 4x4's look like they are anyway cos of their height above the road?

It was - because I was already a good 100+ yards in front before he/she decided to flash main beam. :)

I had my lights on so knew I was behind him/her for the previous 1/2 mile or so

The only thing I will accept is that he/she knew I was going "quickly" and wished to show they were not amused by this. This is the only scenario in which I can accept the action, and I don't really care as I was hungry and wanted to get home so I could grill some crumpets and smother them in butter [drools! ]

Did they flash or knock it back up to main beam? May just be so they could see the road ahead ;)

Chris

I have flashed (quick flash tho) what I thought was a muppet in the past if they have overtaken me on a single carriageway when I was allready travelling at 'speed' especially if it is dark, and to be honest have proabaly been guilty of the same thing myself, suppose it depends on mood at the time, and how well you know the road compared to the 'competition'

A point to bear in mind is if 'god forbid' you have any sort of accident WHATEVER the cause the people following will stop and take certain glee in informing the police their opinion of your driving.

Edit: mind you if he tried to speed up during your manouver (sp) then he was defo a pillock and just upset that you had left him for dead after he had tried to accelerate and then seen you was actually in a Skoda just added the icing to the cake :D

I doubt he could have identified the model really. It was getting to that 8.30 point where you need lights, but it's not even close to pitch black so no need for main beam - except to use at flippin' fast fabias. :D

Like I said, I "think" they tried accelerating - more so after I was already past, but they had no joy.

I think this is the end of the matter to be honest - I accept being flashed at if they were a little unhappy of the speed, but it was dead straight, dead clear, a nice wide single carriageway stretch and I take my own risks with my license/life, so I don't think it's fair for them to judge. I shall :);):) and move on.
