Second thing is it would be intresting to see how rossshand's figures woked out with a dose of Millers Diesel Sport 4 addative in the tank

I tried an additive with my 2 l 406 - it didn't seem to make much difference.

The biggest difference there was between Tesco and vpower.

I tried additive with standard shell, tesco and vpower (using the brim to brim method).

I'm reluctant to try anything with the Octy as it's still under warranty (and the big bad book of instructions advises against putting anything in your go-go juice).

Based on my experience with the 406 as well, it would seem to not make much difference.

I've not been able to update this call with any thing more recently as my journey has changed - I'm going to have to start again :(

The A428 dual carriageway has been opened now - saves about 10 minutes of driving but must have an effect on mpg...

however as I said in another thread, in a recent trip from Dundee to Northampton - 58 mpg :-) calculated over 419 miles (average speed 64mph, engine running about 7:05) Lying car said it was over 60 though....annoying

That was 'standard' shell.

Hi all

New to this forum but was interested in the fuel figures I do a 24 mile round trip in rush hour mostly Mway and mostly nose to tale (M27) I fitted a plug in chip from Germany pushing BHP upto about 115-120 ish (tweeked it a bit!) and regualry return 53mpg I also tow a caravan which saw the biggest difference 90bhp 28-30 mpg fully loaded lots of gearbox stirring with chip 38mpg ave. in this country. Last year 425 mile trip in France 42mpg!

So buying with my wallet this time certainly is paying off also I too usually use Tesco's but might try shell next long trip

The engine had done best part of 10k before real fuel savings were showing now done 39K what I did find though is that it doesn't run to well on Petrol Doh! and that was after owning it for 2 1/2 years double Doh! And it had just been filled to the brim for a 300 mile round trip that hurt almost more than the cost at midnight!!!!!

I filled up today my 2.0 sport petrol, first time for a full tank since getting the car and the mpg on sainsburys super unleaded is 31mpg which is around town driving and to/from work (10 mile drive) of various limits and average speed of 30 mph. Filled up with the v power stuf at shell tonight (expensive is the first thought) and will see how that fairs when i fill up again in about 2 weeks.

If you like 97, try Tesco 99 [petrol]. I go out of my way to get it.

My driving is 60% town 40% distance [150 mile journeys of mixed motorway and A+B roads]. I am on my second Octavia - 1st one was a 1998 hatch with a Superchips upgrade [138 bhp] and over 62,000 miles and managed an average of 52.3 mpg using Tesco diesel with Millers Diesel Power Plus additive. The car passed to my son in 2003 and now has 144,000 miles on clock still using Tesco + Millers and still averages over 50 mpg with well over 60 mpg on runs from the Midlands down to Cornwall with MOT emissions about as low as you can get. Next car was a 2003 Bora Sport TDI 150 again with a Superchips upgrade to 180 bhp, this managed 54.1 mpg over 44,000 miles again using Tesco + Millers with some long runs returning over 60 mpg and with a 48 mpg town average, son-in-law has it now and marvels at the power and economy if driven with thought. New car is a vRS Tdi with RICA upgrade to 205 bhp but as it has less than 2,000 miles on clock it is difficult to give accurate fuel consumption as from experience with diesels it takes about 7-10,000 miles to bed in. Have used BP Ultimate (1st 2 tank fulls) and now on 2nd tank full of Tesco + Millers Diesel Power Sport 4. No noticeable difference in performance or economy between BP and Tesco + Millers (tank 1 gave 48.6 mpg

If you like 97, try Tesco 99 [petrol]. I go out of my way to get it.
isnt vpower 99 or 101? (a higher octane to tesco's?)

Shell v power is "high perfomance" 98 octane. Can't comment because I haven't tried it. The choice round here seems to be 97 octane super, e.g. from Sainsbury, or 99 super from Tesco. Personally I do like the Tesco stuff best.

Ok, so thought I'g give Shell standard diesel a go. Pulled into the station after averaging about 44 mpg (indicated) on most of my laft few drives to and from work, and showing 43.5 mpg brim to brim calc for the tank (42 indicated). Filled up with shell, reset everything and the remainder of the journey read 33 mpg. For the first half of the tank I was getting no more than 36 mpg average, over the same journeys. Second half has increased back to 44 average for the journey to work, but I'm going to get no more than 39mpg b2b out of this tank. Does fuel really make this much difference? Also, why the increase after half a tank? Anyway, think I'll stick to Tescos juice in future!

Phil

at 1200 miles on the clock the latest update is at 35mpg for doing the same journeys as in previous fill ups so that now sits on 35mpg and no doubt will still improve as the mileage clock up (and on the v stuff still). however i can get 42mpg on long runs but with my normal day to day its 35mpg

i had the old Octy and now have the new Ambience Estate i have always got the best MPG out of the Tescos city diesel

The engine is get a little more loose as it has had it's first oil level warning and is at 6700 miles and about 9 weeks old.

The engine does not look ready for the Millers at this point either, shall save that for a rainy day....

Is that trip PC mpg or calculated mpg?

Esso seems quite good by those numbers...

What are you trying next?

The mpgs quoted are calculated mpgs, although I have found that my trip computer is only about 0.3mpg optimistic! I know that that last statement is at odds with other drivers!

Esso is looking good, I agree, although only two tanks. I tend to run to empty on most tanks, and will be looking at Total, BP and Shell next.

Going through a couple tankfuls in a week, I hope to submit some more data soon (sad I know:O )

No entirely un-sad - you seem to be doing quite a few miles, if you (like me) pay for your own fuel then these numbers make a BIG difference to your life (over the course of a year anyway :-) )

I keep note of mine so I know if it's worth paying the extra 1/2/3p for 'premium' fuel.

At the moment though, with the 5p a litre off at Tesco it's worth getting Tescos' fuel as it's 4/5p cheaper than Shell. Normally my local Shell is about the same as Tesco.

latest update, last 3 fill ups have been between 31- 33mpg, including motorway driving and a lot of foot to the floor and getting stuck in gridlocks. will try and get a relaxed drive soon and see how much i can improve the mpg.;)

I have just been reading through the posts on this thread and noted that a number of contributors talk about using the brim to brim method for calculating mpg.

I was at my Skoda dealership recently and caught sight of a notice on the wall warning customers about the dangers of overfilling the fuel tank. It said that the tank was full at the first 'click' of the pump and that if the tank was filled past this point the excess fuel went into the expansion chamber and could contaminate the system. It went on to say that there was a specific VAGCOM code which indicated this condition and that the cost of rectifying the problem, which could be in excess of

I havent heard that, what happens when you go round a corner and some splills into the overflow then?

Anyway my last 3 fill ups were 38 mpg, 42 mpg and 37 mpg, really long journeys, including motorway and about 40 miles min drive, average drive/trip 80 miles. All fill ups were nearly empty back to brim.

Did manage to keep it around 44mpg this morning on way over to cambridge (a421 way), everything was ok till i hit MK and my mpg fell to 35mpg ( too many roundabouts;)) did average out to 38mpg when i got there. and now have around 3.5k on clock now so engine getting much more loose.
