I was looking at incorporating a Picture of the Curch into the Wedding Invitations/ Mass Booklet. I was trying to make it into the Graffic I think you call it. See attached for my effort and an original, I thought someone might be able to do a lot better than mine.

Yep, it's the second one for me too...

I think softer edges would be better so the overall shape is more oval (like Gaff's attempt) rather than the very square edges.

Here's a copy that's had the eliptical tool cut out then filters applied. Brush strokes / accented edges.

Erm, no it wasn't just a filter, there was lots of messing about...

duplicate the layer then desaturate it, duplicate desaturated layer, invert the copy of the desaturated layer so it looks like a negative, change blend mode from normal to colour dodge, then go filter, blur, gaussian blur and alter to how you like.
