Removing marks left on plastic trim by wax???

Featured Replies

As the title really........ The mrs's new car has been waxed by the previous owner and has white wax marks all over the black bump strips, numberplate surround and wing mirror bases. I've tried a good wash with the wash mit and soapy water but no joy....... Any suggestions to get rid of the marks.

Cheers

Dave

PEANUT BUTTER, but smooth, not crunchy.

Other things that work include "Head and Shoulders", and AutoGlym bumper treatment.

Correct!!!!! smooth peanut butter and a tooth brush works like magic ....no we are not having a laugh

Does the autoglym stuff just mask the marks for a while till it wears off or does it actually clean the marks off???

Dave.

I use the AutGlym bumper care & it works really well but it doesn't seem to last. Maybe it is just putting a layer over the plastic rather than really cleaning it. The cloth does get black with dirt though when applying.

Maybe I should try this & then some bumper care over the top. Or are you having a laugh? ;)

I use some Megs Endurance High Gloss Tyre Protection Gel on the tyres and then just wipe over the black trims with the applicator pad when i'm done, works a treat and saves buying two products.

No messing, it works, and the oil in it actually shines the plastic as well

I tried the peanut butter - works like magic - if you want to be a perfectionist try peanut oil - it dissolves away the wax very fast...

well thanks for the advice chaps. I've just done the numberplate surround during a break in the FA cup final, and it looks like new!!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

I'd have never imagined that as a solution. :finger:

I'll finish it off later on.

Another believer

So whats the best way to apply the peanut butter and then remove it afterwards?

I can appreciate a toothbrush woud be useful for tricky areas but is the rest just applied with a normal cloth?

And does it need hot soapy water to remove it?

tooth brush really cleans all the dirt out so if you don't do one bit ..it will show......just used a hose pipe and brush to get it off again

Be aware that dogs like it too, well our one does

I just apply it with a mf cloth, and wipe it off with a clean one. You only need a tiny bit.

Well i've just gone round the car and got rid of all the white residue left on the plastic trim.......

I used a toothbrush to apply the peanut butter..... Agitating it as i went along....... Then some wet kitchen roll to wipe the excess then some more dry kitchen roll to dry it. Then i just washed around the areas with my wash mit and car wash solution then rinsed off and it looks spot on.

Dont forget a little salt. It improves the taste!!

One i use to use on my white car with black trims was back to black sprayed on to a cloth and gently wiped in a circular action, did the trick for me.

I find that ordinary glass cleaner works ( not the cream based!! ), eg windowlean or Mr muscle. Squirt it on the cloth first the wipe over.

same here, it looks like the same stuff in both tyre protection and the meg trim detailer anyway.

Just tried the Peanut butter today. Worked very well. Have done some strips with PB & some with Autoglym Bumpercare; I want to see which lasts longest.

Family thought I was nuts when I mentioned what I was going to do but had to admit it looked a treat afterwards!

Auto Glym bumper care, works wonders. See my thread A good seeing to, i used it on the plastics. :D

Agree, but the effect doesn't seem to last long. Peanut butter gives a marginally better result but is a lot more time consuming. It'll be worth it if it lasts though.

It may work very well, but why on earth would someone be thinking "Hmm, can't shift wax from the plastics.....I know, I'll use Peanut butter!"? What if it wasn't the first cullinary sugestion? I can imagine a car sat on somones drive with all sorts spreadd on it. Lard, marmite, cheese slices (not as effective as clay though!).

Another vote for spray glass cleaner on a cloth :)

 That's exactly what I was thinking as I was doing it. How the hell did someone come up with this idea!
