Yes, I used the aerosol. Worked a treat.

Have we still Radio Shack shops in the uk:confused: or did you order it via a website :o

Tandy closed down quite a few years ago , but there are still independent electrical shops that stock Radio Shack products.

But it aids good electrical conduction.

Sorry, it doesn't. The grease prevents corrosion by acting as an inhibitor of moisture and O2. If the grease was conductive it would be too easy to get "bleed" across the terminals if the grease got hot and then liquefied and spread. This would be highly likely in the case of the MAF as the ambient temp is high and the terminals are close together.

I think the idea is that it aids electrical conduction by insulating the terminals further from any potential interference from each other - that's partly why it's used in spark plug boots...

In any case - it really does work.....

Basil , its used in spark plug boots to create a vacuum inside the boot , a smear around the edge of the boot before refitting is all thats required , it stops the arching and tracking of the spark which can occur when there is air in the boot, as the spark takes the path of least resistance to earth , no air ,no spark

thats what the Ford and Mazda bods said on the technical courses anyway

I'm not aware of this problem, but I start to worry when people talk about filling a connector with dielectric (ie, insulating) grease. If dirty connectors are causing trouble the answer is to open the connector, carefully clean male and female contacts, coat them lightly with a grease such as Vaseline and reconnect. I don't see how an insulating grease is going to help a dodgy connection.

When I push my connector back on it never clicks meaning it isn't pushed fully in, ergo isn't necessarily connected. Did I break something? :D

Did mine last weeknd and the smoke has virtually gone, you realy have to boot it to get any smoke to speak about now.

Seems to run A LOT better from cold and I don't know if it's just the placebo effect, but it does seem more responsive at lower revs, I mean it doesn't seem to hesitate as much when I ask for a little power just jobbing about round town.

I have driven the same too and the MPG seems to have gone up slightly, only say 3MPG, but who knows, surely less black smoke is fuel saved as it's normally wasted fuel.

another satisfied customer....

Bas

I know a few electricians at work so i will see what they have knocking about after lunch and give mine a shot of this stuff too.

One of my mates gave me some electrical contact cleaner, so i gave that a go.

The car drives exactly the same from what i can tell, but the smoke under full throttle is greatly reduced, so worthwhile if your hoping to reduce soot and if you notice a difference in the way the car drives, then i would look at that as a bonus :D

So guys, did we decide which was the best method/solution to this problem. Just seen and read this thread now and I'm very interested in what's being said as I have had this 'black-smoke' problem for a while with my vrs. I do a lot of motorway driving and even after booting it, at lower speeds it still sometimes blows out black smoke. I've used a one-shot redex diesel treatment and it did improve but it still smokes!

Can anyone recommend the best product please?

Cheers.

Yeah, suppose I set myself up for that one didn't I! I did forget to say though that the performance after a long drive ie 40-50 miles plus does appear to drop off too. I almost have to push the car harder to get the same performance as i did earlier in the journey. It becomes a bit hesitant and so that combined with the excessive black smoke issue seems to concern me.

Maybe i'm worrying about nowt?

That could be heat soak affecting the intercooler, air comes in through the front of the car onto the intercooler but then doesn't have anywhere to go - search for pikey wheel arch mod.

My GPS isnt too bad because it has a Diesel Particulate Filter, but when the DPF is on the 'burn off' phase every thousand miles or so its horrendous. All diesels will smoke, look at

No the only thing to consider about the pikey arch mod is air wont flow through the front bumper, through the intercooler and into the wheel arch. When you are driving along the rotation of the wheel disturbs the air in the wheel arch, it creates a high pressure inclosure so the fast moving air coming through can get bounced back.

Yup, that's why I never bother doing mine, not realy anywhere to vent it outside the bumper without it lookign ****, unless you could direct it into the engine bay where it could possible escape better out the back of the belly plate?

No idea though, don't know how tight it is down there for mods like this?

why do you get cars with vents in the wheel arch liner, such as the Honda Accord then? Does it serve some other purpose.

What it's like further up the rev range?

Does the rev needle get to 4500rpm in the first three gears without slowing, for example?

Steady on - it's a dab of grease, not a remap! ;)

:P

Its a diesel, thats what they do (produce black smoke)

Mine must be broken then, as it never smokes. :)

Seriously, the exhaust stays pretty clean between weekly car washes and despite getting booted most of the time.

Tried the Cage Mod, but noticed no difference.

I took from this that the engine was running optimally.

Rev needle swings rapidly to 4500rpm in first three gears without slowing.

Starts to slow after 4000rpm in fourth, though.

Will find out for sure how well the car is performing in two weeks when it gets dynoed.

I know that the effects of the pikey mod are disputed, just wondering does the 100 1.9PD have a SMIC? If so is it in the same place as the Vrs?

Would this be any good?

Steve

You want the RE90X one in a squeezy tube
