Broken engine....what are my options?

Featured Replies

I got a 2nd hand Fabia (and PLEASE get one of those, the Golf one WILL NOT FIT without work) PD130 engine in the end, with 11k on the clock, and that was a hell of a lot cheaper then a 'new' one. Unfortunately there was a hair crack in the bottom end of my old engine, so can't help you with my spares collection :(

Bad luck though :(

I'd never do a ffelan.

im very pleased to here that. :P

shame about your engine. 1.8T would be the way to go. easy 300hp + better handling....

sod the 2.8 v6 surely the 3.2 from a later A3 would be a better bet - mind you i know 4.2 v8 into a3/s3 has been done........

if it were mine i would space frame the back end drop a small block chevy + porsche g50 box into it.... rwd 400hp "proper car" engine and box would be sub 2k......

Unlucky shifty. :(

There was an r36 motor on debay a few weeks ago for 4k eu, that would be nice. :D

Making it petrol powered would not be that difficult, it's something I did years ago with a golf van. Fuel tank could be sourced from a polo or better still a nice little fuel cell in the spare wheel well...shed shed loads of weight. You would also need to budget in up to

How a bout a trip to zcars.org.uk

I looked into a bike conversion for an ex race lupo i very nearly bought, but I think the fabia is a bit of a porker for bike power. :D

I'm sure they wouldnt mind trying a mid engined 1.8T 225 engine.:)

There was a diesel block repairer in Nelson or Colne who was advertising VW blocks / repairs. I'll try to find it again.

The thread was for someone else who had a cracked block. I think it was WW_vRS but damned if I can find it.

You're not having much luck of late :thumbdwn:

Found this - but 32k engine

eBay.co.uk: SEAT ALHAMBRA 1.9 TDi TURBO DIESEL ENGINE (code: ASZ) (item 320117680855 end time 21-Jun-07 23:30:46 BST)

also from 06 Passat (dunno engine code)

eBay.co.uk: VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 1.9 TDI DIESEL ENGINE (06 reg) (item 320082435210 end time 13-Jun-07 20:56:25 BST)

The engine has to be from a Fabia or Ibiza as WW found out. Small differences mean a Golf or the like engine wont work.

Why not use the fuel tank from a petrol fabia?

No need for custom managment just use the ecu from the donor car.

Not sure a 1.8T would be worth the cost or effort as it's allready available in the same chassis as standard in the Ibiza and polo.

I would either rebuild the existing engine but with a larger bore if viable or get a used ASZ engine from a Fabia or Ibiza or even a PD160 engine from an Ibiza Cupra if you can find one.

True any petrol ibiza/fabia/polo would do...

Sure you can use the keys, clocks and engine loom but IMO the better and easier way is to use standalone.

You say not to bother with the 1.8t but it would be the cheapest option for maximum power....

Go for the fabia linked to above - the "02" one. I got the nearside driveshaft from it, and the yard is quite honest. I think they're a VW specialist breakers. The front end is relatively untouched, which bodes well for the condition of the engine & gearbox. A straight swap like for like would take perhaps 1 day? Maybe a 12 hour day. :D I assume you'd swap the turbos over too? :D

As a guide, my mate had my pd100 out my car in under 1 hour, although it was the second time he'd taken a pd100 out of a fabia for me. :D The first time was when I'd somewhat damaged my other one.

The standard clocks and keys could be retained and recoded to the new ECU only problem would be the rev counter not going high enough.

Not really. Would be cheaper and easier to make it standard, sell it and buy an Ibiza 1.8T.
