Got myself a fabia! Help?!

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I payed the deposit on my favia vrs today.

traded in my mk4 golf 1.4 (which was my first car) and im now looking forward to having a play with my fabia in 8 or so days!

I joined mkIV forum a couple of years back, but tbh, i think the previous owner of my golf gave it a rough time, and i quickly lost interest in the joys of golfhood.

By the time I gave it over today, the piston seals are going, the gearbox selector seems to have packed in, it had a new gearbox , and in the first 30days i got it 4/5 new sensors under warranty (lambda etc)

Looking on the bright side, my new fabia is an 06 with 6k on the clock, so heres hopeing for the best! .... insurance is 70-80 quid cheaper too!!

Ive had a general search over the site as theres nothing worse than a noob who doesnt use the search button.

So really just saying hello, and really asking if theres anything i should no, or any must read articles i should look over?

Im going to run it standard for a couple of months as going from a poorly running 75bhp heavy golf, to a 1.0tdi in a polo chasis, id end in a field on a remap.

There seems to be a lot of chat about the p d 160 inlet mod, so ive had a look on ebay and cant really fins any info, could anyone maybe give me any info?

And last all... hey!

Griogair (soon to be fabia driver!)

If its an '06 model , have you read up on 'the stutter'? I suppose it may have been mentioned on Ukmkivs before , as the Golf uses the same Euro IV PD130 unit (doesnt it?). Have you test driven the car? If you have , and didnt notice it , then you have no worries! Oh , and welcome to Briskoda!:)

The Golf didn't use the BLT engine no.

As for the PD160 intake head down to your local SEAT dealer should you want one.

You'll find the part numbers of SEAT parts on my Fabia website if you haven't got them.

pd 160 intake just provides a less restrictive route for the air to travel to the airbox, coupled with a green cotton filter your car should breath easier, don't know weather it works in practice but will be fitting mine next weekend.

As for the afore mentioned stutter it seems some of the later cars have it bad and some not at all,I think mine has it a bit but because i have read about it i think it could be my imagination.

Other mods you should consider are a jabba re map, jabba rear arb, lowering springs and a decent set of fast road pads,as the weakness in the fabia vrs is in the compromised handling and the gaps between the wheelarch and wheels are allmost offroad proportions.

Other than that enjoy and welcome to briskoda

Wasn't aware the vrs was a 1.0l tho:rofl:

haha, typing error due to my noobness!

eek! im on page 13 of the stutter sticky, im not sure how many pages are left, but i hope its a happy ending, im at the part where the legend of an official fix is looming at a few dealers (cried at the part when the girl from the service center left :( )

Im in bonnie scotland, so star performance is prob a better option travel wise (and the talk is where i am on the stutter thread, a remap may solve stutters?)

with any luck i dont even have one!

a bit of a daft question, but in the grand scale of things, what am i going to beat on a straight stetch of motorway post and pre remap?....type r, wee saxos, clio sports etc??

might check out seat before going to see star then...would be nice to see their yellow fabia again, its fleein!

Everything this side of a 2.0l Fabia :D

None of them Im afraid. Maybe the saxo if remapped. Type R will noticeably leave you when in right gear, so will the clio, but to a lesser degree.

Fabia is only quick when 'in gear'. So effortless overtaking without the need to change down once (or twice). Also the fabia is great when facing a tightening corner as you can brake, and accelerate without the need to change gear (see the theme?)

When remapped its a little different as you have to watch your clutch, so low down accelerating isnt advised. WHen remapped it acts far more like a petrol and will run with good power to the red line. A standard car runs out of puff above 3.5-4k revs...

As for PD 160 intake, id save the

I think that's a bit harsh. The Fabia's got as much power as any 106 / Saxo / Corsa (with the exception of the new VXR!) Sure, the French ones have the advantage of being made out of biscuit tins, which helps power-to-weight, but it's more a question of learning how to get the best out of the diesel engine. There have been times when I've struggled to keep up with a 1.4 Corsa SXi because of bad gear choice, but then there are other occasions when I've been able to pass much faster cars by taking advantage of the aforementioned in-gear acceleration at middling speeds.

Two things I would say if you're intending to *ahem* compare your car's performance to others':

1. Traffic light grand prixs are a non-starter, as the gearing doesn't work well for 0-XX drags

2. If you pass anyone in your Skoda driving pretty much anything made in Germany or Japan, they will accelerate and try to stop you pulling back in... :thumbdwn:

Can't agree my 1.1 106 was like lightning especially from a standing start it would beat anything from the lights so was great for driving round town and did fine on Mway.

I find the Fabia so so slow the acceleration is just about usless and when going up hills it's a nightmare and have to leave it in the low gears for ages, when pulling on to the Mway it takes an age to get up to speed especially as my local junction is up hill!!! it's foot to the floor and keep in a low gear for ages. Once I am up to speed it is then great (my old favourite from years ago was the same) and the same can be said round town when your coasting in 3rd/4th gear its ok but between changng gears and accelerating it's poor and the stutter comes in.

Starting to learn that i can't get away with early gear changes and having to go a touch higher in each gear.

The 106 was so much more fun to drive but not as smooth.

I have noticed on the Mway suddenly the person your overtaking speeds up in both Skodas I have had.

Now now. Keep the perspective.... :P

That car 'felt' quick as it is small, light and you can hear all the goings on around you (road, engine noise etc), but compare this to even the average rep' mobile where you are sitting in a large car with an adequate engine size and with the benefits of some sound deadening and you have a 1.1 106 being shown a clean set of heals and the rep' mobile not even really noticing.

As for beating anything off the lights. Again perhaps, just perhaps a 1.1 106 didnt register on the other drivers' 'lets-race-em o'meter' so you got off to an average start and they calmly accelerated after...

Just my 2p...

Er, how does that contradict this, exactly? ;)

As for finding it slow up hills etc, I've never had a problem, as I always make sure the car's on-boost. Driving east over Corney Fell (you'll know where I mean if you've been there!), I've never been in anything faster up the 1-in-6ish bit just after you leave the A595...

I think his Fabia might be missing a turbo, which may be why it's not as quick as a vRS :D

As for the traffic light grand prix's ... I'd have had yer in my average diesel powered rep mobile ;)

Ah, I see!

I can't deny my wife's MPi is very slow, so comparing that to your average Saxo is probably more like it! :D

It's not just from the lights though it seems to be really slow and heay after every gear change and like I said accelerating on the Mway to get up to speed just doesn't happen although once your up to speed suddenly everything clicks into place and your off.

Indeed no turbo just box standard

No, no. Fair enough. The original post was about a vRS and I didn't put 2 and 2 together with your username! As I said, my wife's got a 1.4MPi which I've driven from time-to-time, and with that I've found it doesn't respond at all well to attempts to drive fast. Being pushrod and 8v it's hardly surprising, and I find it's far better to keep the revs between about 2k and 3.5k, rather than chasing the red line. It doesn't sound very fast driven like that, but it's perfectly adequate in a getting-from-A-to-B stylee!

4k+ is saved for only the steepest hills, and then only for as short a period as possible...

Whoops sorry didn't realise I had hijacked a vRS thread

Cheers for the advice on the revs at first I was changing on 2.5kish like I did in the 106 but now I am taking it 3k or just a little over which seems to work a bit better for power after the gear change 2.5 just wasn't enough 4k+ is sometimes hit when trying to get up the hill at the Mway juncton with a 40ft tanker catching you up!!!!

Im slightly discouraged with my shinny new vrs not being deemed a type r beater! :(

I presumed the vastly more useable low powerband would **** all over a civic screaming to 9k to get the full whack out its motor.

Espesially, when you consider:

- a remap can take you within <20 bhp,

- fabia has oodles more torque

- and im presuming @1300kg its a wee bit lighter than a civic ?

Going to have a wee looksee at the roll bar justnow!

theres an old boy goes to gti shows in scotland with a yellow jabbasport 1.8t coupra and it looks well done!

i got the 1.4 courtesy car going well could drive it way faster than my vrs, stunk of fire afterwards tho .Odd that:rofl:
