Changing Headlights to Continental

Pity its not like the new Superb where you can do it through maxidot at a push of a switch to set.

I bought an American convertible while working in Germany and brought it back to the UK. To get it through the SVA I had to adapt the headlights. Turned out to be very simple if you have H4 bulbs. Take out the bulbs and cut off the three tangs. Put the bulbs back. They are held tightish by the spring. Face the car to a convenient wall with the lights on and taking care not to burn your fingers rotate the bulb in place though about 15 degrees clockwise to convert to UK or anti clockwise to go the otherway. What happens is the kick up to the left is now the flat and the previous flat is now the kick up to the right. Passes the MOT everytime and can be reversed any time or just replace the bulb. Doesn't work with Xenons unfortunately. Cheers

Bump. The Octi facelift now does this.

In regards to the winter tires requirement in Germany: I just moved from Hamburg where I learned the insurance companies there will not cover you if have an accident and the tires are not winter spec (during winter, of course). So everyone has a set installed in the fall...

Hi Mater, great post. By the way have you heard the latest though on the BFG, I heard from the test center at sennelager that as of next year, they will not allow the "flat beam" approach. Typical hey!!

hes definately right, i have just renewed my BFG paperwork last month. however i was lucky as my the initial BFG light test is valid for 3 years so until then(or unless i get pulled by the german police) im keeping my normal lights on a flat beam

Only when it has the Xenons. ;)

Had my Scout Xenons flat-beamed by a dealer and found that the lights were absolutely fine on two overnight trips to Switzerland and back. Will leave them like this instead of faffing about !

Hi folks,

first of all, being from Germany I wish to greet all of you staying or working here ;-)

To be honest, I didn't know that stuff like flatbeaming was necessary in the first place....even when staying longer I thought that british cars were british cars and the other way round in the UK....I have been over many times and never changed anything on my lights. OK, in earlier times the headlights had those shaped glassfronts where you could use black adhesive tapes, but since these are no longer common I thought nothing had to be changed any more....strange ;-)

As for the winter tires, slo007 ist right.....you are not forced to use WT, but once something happens you get problems with your insurance.

Cheers from Cologne,

Marco
